Day two of three and the main event of our Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument trip.
JJ and I hiked this 10 years ago. Most details had been forgotten.
Following the drive from our campsite, we got going on the hike around 830.
Lots of great scenery and elevation gain. Only saw one other hiker on the ascent. Once we summitted we spent a half hour poking around the area and snacking. Got off trail a bit near the Bull Pasture sign but got back on the main trail quickly. Saw a few more folks on the way down, only one of which probably made it up top.
Top notch hike and company. Thanks Kelly! :)

the main event for our camping trip
up just before sunrise, coffee and breakfast
takes awhile to get to the trailhead on ajo mountain drive
we got started around 0830 or so
50 degrees, some shade to start with
up the steps on bull pasture trail
arrived at the saddle in a couple miles, then the traverse around bull pasture
the steep scree part is not my favorite section of this trail
even less so on the way down
jojoba bushes to hang on to
along the boulder ledge section and then the ridgeline
spent about 30 minutes on the summit, checking out the views, snacking, wandering over to the electronic stuff to the north
perfect temps, clear skies
returned via estes canyon
saw five or six people - three of them might have summited
i love this hike, even though the footing is challenging for me at times
don't mind the effort involved at all
great terrain and scenery throughout
relaxed back at camp and made dinner
john and janie's daughter and granddaughter joined us friday evening
they brought snacks :)
fun day

From the Department of Redundancy Department, I'm unsure why this one is titled Mount Ajo Peak? Is that like Mt. Wrightson Peak? Mt. Baldy Peak? :-k

Despite the summerlike temperatures, we set out to climb this summit within a few miles of the international border.

With minimal research ahead of time, it was a nice surprise to find Hugh Norris quality steps on the initial climb up Bull Pasture, and even more of a surprise to find such a well-defined route all the way to the summit. Except for the slippery stretch up the main drainage, the entire route is first class enjoyment. Especially the section that traverses the upper slopes and the final ridge to the summit.

At the top I was wandering around and checking views from various points when I noticed a coyote approaching from the north. He whistled at me and I waved back in spanish. The pistol he had holstered to his chest made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside as I hurried back to find 9L and practice some of my rudimentary spanish phrases.

Turned out that pistol was a pair of gloves and Neil was just Idaho's version of JJ3. He had ascended from Arch Canyon for the first time in 30 years, when he used to work in the monument. After a lengthy break and some chatting, we started back down, setting a blistering pace with our plus one clearly irritated by our still-leisurely approach to wilderness travel.

It was warm all day, though occasional breezes really cut into the sweat. On the descent, high clouds filtered the sun and made it a bit more enjoyable. Given the marathon speed attained, we opted for the longer Estes Canyon loop to finish, with plenty of time before sunset to find a nice place to set up camp in the desert.

The geology and the flora here is quite remarkable, and I would absolutely put this on a list to do again. I'd expect that in a winter with some rain, clouds, and cooler temperatures, this area might really pop.

A perfect way to close the door on 24.

I was hoping there would be a good flower showing at Organ Pipe this year. There was a nice variety but Brittlebush was they main attraction along with the cacti! Bruce hadn’t been here before so he joined me for a nice sample size of the park.

Arch Canyon
I only did the easy part of this hike. It was cool to see Bruce from down below and shows you how big the Arch is!

Bull Pasture lookout loop
Some nice sections of Organ Pipe Cactus and Brittlebush on this hike with a pretty good climb.
Views for miles up there. We ran into an older group of 3 we had seen on our first hike. Bruce made their day telling them jokes and taking their pictures. He can be a nice guy! 😂

Victoria Mine/Lost Cabin
This was a flatter hike but I was wore out by the second half. Both stops had partial buildings and I’m sure they had some stories to tell. Some good vegetation in parts of this hike. The pics of the red Ocotillo don’t do them justice. I also spotted a Bursera tree and the start of a crested Saguaro!
Bruce spotted one garter snake on way back.

Nature trail
You can loop through visitor center but we were an hour late so did the out and back. They have a pond with the pupfish.

Thanks for the adventure Bruce!

Denny wanted to get down to the Organ Pipe NM to check out the flower show down there. I'd never been there before, so I was a go. To knock out 3ish new trails for me. The first 2 are on the 21 mile loop drive. The drive itself had some great views and some impressive Organ Pipe cactus.

Arch Canyon
3.08 Miles
1328 AEG

You can see both of the arches from the TH. This was my favorite hike of the day. A steady grade until you hit the canyon and make the turn to the south. It then climbs steeply to the top. Once up top you make an initial drop to a saddle area where you can see the TH, but will need to make an additional drop to be able to get to the big arch. Stick to the east side of this canyon and follow the cairns.

Denny stayed back to try and get photos of me in the arch. He called out from down below close to the TH. I could hear him, but never was able to see him.
[ youtube video ]

Flowers were poppin on the hike and everything was green, green, green.
Brittle bush was the main player, but there were numerous others in abundance.

Bull Pasture - Estes Canyon Loop
4.51 miles
1198 AEG

2nd favorite hike of the day. We did this CCW and went to "The Overlook" on the Bull Pasture Trail and then went to the peak above The Overlook.
[ youtube video ]

After a short break, we headed down and hit the Estes Canyon trail. This was a steeper drop down, but rollercoastered nicely back to the TH.
Same variety of flowers poppin' here. We had lunch back at the TH where I noticed of the 6 cars I could see at the TH, all were from different states.

Victoria Mine - Lost Cabin Trail
7.28 miles
675 AEG

This one will be a one and done for me. Off to Victoria Mine first everything is covered over here, to protect the bat habitat. A longish walk to get over to the Lost Cabin and mine area.
The afternoon sun was a bit warm making this seem to be longer than it was. Following the lead from a @Joebartels / @Darthstiller track, we went off trail short-cutting the route back. Quite a bit of this was on a worn use trail. The predominate flower on the hike were the carpets of Rock Daisies.

Nature Trail
.32 miles
5 AEG!

Last up, was one Denny talked about all day. This one was supposed to be a loop, but since we were there after the Visitors Center was closed, it turned into a much longer Out and Back

All in all, a great day with plenty of flora in a new area for me.

Thanks for the idea, hike and driving Turtle!

A beautiful loop in Organ Pipe. The trail was in great shape! The weather was perfect. Lots of wildflowers blooming. The views up top were amazing. I wish I had started earlier in the day so I could have added Mt Ajo in.

Compared to many of the wilderness areas in Arizona, this one is not at all lonely. Although it is far from metropolitan centers, the wilderness is inside Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, so the road is good enough for a car, parking is plentiful, and there is a restroom at the trailhead. I saw about 10 hikers and 10 trail crew on my trek.

Before dawn, it was 28 degrees and breezy, so I put on my windbreaker for the first part of the hike. By midafternoon, as I hiked out, I was too warm in my long-sleeve poly shirt.

I was surprised how lush the vegetation is here. Especially as you hike up the Bull Pasture Trail, you notice the dense growth. Throughout the walk, I noticed all kinds of cactus; the namesake organ pipe cactus is not the only cactus here, perhaps not even the main cactus. There was lots of saguaro and ocotillo. Several kinds of cholla were rampant: teddy-bear, chain fruit, and cane cholla. There were occasional prickly pear, agave and yucca as well.

The path beyond the end of the maintained trail at Bull Pasture is pretty easy to follow, although I got off track a couple of times when I wasn’t paying attention. Follow the official GPS route, and you will not go wrong. The climb up the ravine in the field of scree is not especially fun, and after clearing it, it continued to gnaw at me as I headed for the peak. To save energy for the climb back down the scree field, I stopped my climb about 400’ short of the summit. My climb down the scree field was slow and careful, and it worked out fine.

I highly recommend this hike, although I think the Estes Canyon trail is not worth the additional half mile it adds.

Got a room in Tucson instead of camping in the cold. Grabbed breakfast at Robert’s on Grant then set off for Organ Pipe. Drove by a road grader on the way in and stopped to stretch my legs on the Arch Trail. It was already 11am so I knew I only had about 6 hours of daylight left. I wanted to see the mountains around sunset anyways for pictures so it worked out.

Hit the trail at a quarter to 12. My pace was much slower than the previous day on Hugh Norris, partly from fatigue but also because of the varied footing on this trail (flat single track is rare). The slippery SE section of trail before gaining the ridgeline brought back memories of Tin Mountain. I deemed those thoughts irrational and pressed on.

There’s one section on the east side of the backbone which required a quick scramble. I made it difficult on the way up but cruised through on the way down. I hit the ridgeline crest early and backtracked. In retrospect, all of those particular spurs end up at the same point just before the summit block.

The summit sure is airy! I stuck to the main block, though I did check the next one over for a reference mark. I heard a plane passing by and couldn’t see anything in the sky. Suddenly, I caught a glimpse of a rather large plane flying on its side through the peaks below me to the east. Looked like a daring maneuver, much too fast for me to get a good picture.

Heading down took about as long as going up - a telltale sign of a badass mountain. I finished off my 3L of water along the slippery section - so glad I brought a gallon because there was still some work to do. My left knee was crapping out around the sixth or seventh mile.

I lost the trail briefly below Bull Pasture and noticed my mistake before coming to the cliffs. :scared: Back on track, I walked by four others near the Bull Pasture sign. Opted to take Estes Canyon back down. I liked the idea of finishing the downhill section early, however that extra half mile felt tedious because of my knee.

Man, those sunset views around 5:30 were so worth the late start and constant sun in the latter half. What a gorgeous mountain range. Made it back to the car at a quarter to 6 and watched what must have been the last vehicle race by as I prepared for the drive home. Extra points for the killer sunset contrasts on the way out.
 This one’s been on my radar for a very long time and it delivered in every aspect.

Looooong overdue for a trip back to hike Mount Ajo. It has been almost 4 years since I did it last. Funny how time goes by so quickly. Anyway, I left the house around 10:30 this morning and arrived around 1:15PM. There were two other cars in the lot but I only saw two other hikers the whole trip. I love this hike due to the awesome views and the interesting terrain. I just wish it was an hour closer and I would do it far more often. Temps today were in the low 90's so it wasn't too bad for late May. Took me an hour and 49 minutes to reach the top. I tried to see if I could spot the Sea of Cortez as I had done once before up there but I just couldn't make it out. The sun really needs to be further west to see the reflection off of the water. Otherwise it just looks like flat land out there.

On the return I took the Estes Canyon Loop per usual just to mix it up a little. Not much excitement out there just a good hike...

I had heard good things about this hike, and since the weather is cooler now, I decided to head down to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and check out Mount Ajo. I managed to persuade Tracie the Intrepid to go down there with me.

When we got into the park, we made a brief stop at the visitors center, and then took Ajo Mountain Drive to the Estes Canyon Picnic Area, where we parked.

We began by taking the Bull Pasture Trail for a mile or so, and then took an unofficial trail up to Mount Ajo. There was a section that was steep and slippery -- it wasn't too bad going up, but I took my time on the way down. Route finding was a bit of a challenge near the peak -- I wound up going up to a false summit, and had to come back down to the "trail". I somehow got turned around and wound up heading back to the TH for a short distance. Tracie kept telling me that we were going the wrong way; fortuanately, I started listening to her. With the backtracking and going to the false summit, we added some distance and elevation gain to the hike.

We did make it to the summit and hung out there for a bit, and then made our way back. On the way back, we took the Estes Canyon Trail to complete the Bull Pasture-Estes Canyon Loop. The Estes Canyon Trail was nice and I enjoyed hiking on it.

This was a good hike, but it won't make my top 10 list.

This was the second hike of the day for our big roadtrip/daytrip to Organ Pipe NM. We finished up the Victoria Mine/Lost Cabin hike before 11am, and got started on this one just before noon. Hiking Arch Canyon was also a consideration as a third hike for the day, trying to be ambitious. The problem was the fact that the loop road to both hikes is a one way road, and it's about 17 miles long, and the Estes Canyon-Bull Pasture hike is after Arch Canyon. Bull Pasture was higher on the priority list so we were doing that first. Doing Arch Canyon meant driving the 17 mile loop all over again. It was already getting late in the day, so we decided to skip it for this trip.

We started along the Estes Canyon Trail, making a clockwise loop. The views along this trail are immediately amazing. the hike starts mostly level for the first mile and a half, which is enough time to warm up and loosen up the muscles before the big climb.

The trail heads into the canyon and then turns south and starts to climb up. Soon enough there is the junction with Bull Pasture Trail, which has a sign indicating it's a half mile to Bull Pasture. The climb up there is at least as much from the bottom of the canyon to the trail junction.

At the end of the official trail, there is a sign that only says "Bull Pasture", and a box for a sign in register, with no actual register. From that point there are two easily visible trails that continue. We took the one for over a half mile further. It went further south and then headed east around the actual Bull Pasture and then we could see it started to climb. I kept expecting it to fade away and end. When I looked ahead, I could it was climbing more and then I noticed that we weren't all that far from the top of Mt. Ajo. It was then that I remembered seeing the alternate routes for this hike and they were all Mt. Ajo summit, if I was remembering correctly. I asked Joe if he had internet access to check the site but he didn't. I later checked at home and confirmed what I thought. We weren't all that far form the top, but between it being almost 2pm and I had my smaller Camelbak and not enough water, it became obvious it was time to head back.

At the southern end of the Bull Pasture along this unofficial trail, we were able to see some kind of white cabinet that was adjacent to the trail as we walked in. Not sure what it was, maybe some kind of rain gauge or weather data collection station. We couldn't see it as we walked back and this was mentioned several times by Joe. I should have taken a zoom in photo of it to get a better view of what it was.

From the end of the official trail we took the second trail spur to the ridge just to the south that overlooks the loop road. The views from that spot are phenomenal. You can see Mt. Ajo well, the Bull Pasture, Estes Canyon and far south into Mexico. The 100 Classic Hikes book says there is no established trail to this spot, but I don't agree with that, not for current conditions. The trail is faint but is pretty established, just not an official trail maintained by NPS.

On the hike back down we saw more hikers than the rest of the entire day. And by some odd stroke of luck, it seemed like every hiker we was on this hike was within a quarter mile of the trail junction of the Bull Pasture and Estes Canyon trails.

The extra exploring we did on this hike made it obvious that it was the right decision to skip Arch Canyon. It was also good scouting for a possible return trip on day to attempt to summit Mt. Ajo, which seems possible from both here and from Arch Canyon, making for either a shuttle or loop hike.

the weather for both our hikes today was just nearly perfect. It was a little cool and windy on this hike the higher up we got, but nothing bad enough that I would call chilly. Nice to have a chance to check out this area.

Left my house at 4:30am and got home at 7:30pm, making for a long day. The traffic back on I-10 was nearly rush hour conditions, which was rough to deal with at the end of a long day, but made getting home that much nicer.

We traveled Estes → Bull. My expectations with Bull Pasture in the name were rock bottom. Within fifteen minutes it was like we were magically delivered to the juicy tenderloin of the Superstitions without miles of dull red chuck.

Up out of Estes we followed a fading use trail to the pasture. Then up to 3,437. The view back down to the NW was the highlight of the day.

Enjoyed easy loop hike start to finish.

Before heading up to Ajo for night two, I wanted to give this hike another try, since I was unable to do it last year. It is a beautiful loop, and if you tack on going to Bull Pasture (or beyond to Mount Ajo) it adds steepness and variety. Got a fairly late start (9:30) and it was a very warm day (85-90 degrees), so I knew I had to be careful and not push it. I had the fanny pack with two 20 ounce water bottles, but I wasn't hiking many miles (my water consumption on hikes is typically way less than most folks...ended up drinking 30 of my 40 ounces). Fortunately my leg problems didn't act up, so it worked out alright. Did get a little toasty on the return down in Estes Canyon where I lost the nice breezes I had been enjoying higher up. Shade was sparse, but found some to help out on mini breaks. And hey, standing in the shadow of a Saguaro works well too!

The desert vegetation out in this park is really impressive and it was looking mighty fine this day. :)

The Turtle and I set out to knock another one off his list for the Hundred Classic Hikes in Arizona book. Mount Ajo or as listed on the Benchmark "Sierra Del Ajo" is always a winner in my book so I was happy to join him on this one.

Our first hike of the day was up to the Arch and then we did the peak. The day provided us with overcast and cool temps. A steady breeze up top made it almost chilly. Upon reaching the summit we signed the register and then headed back down. This whole range is so scenic I just love it!

On the way home we stopped for a bite in Maricopa. Good times!

:y: Another hike out of the 100 hikes book and a cool Peak thrown in too. Thanks JJ. We did the Arch Canyon hike first and I tried to use it for the reason I was dragging on this hike. JJ wasn't buying it but did wait up for me. We did the hike counter clockwise with the summit in the middle. The first two miles seemed a lot easier to me. The second two got steeper but there is a trail pretty much all the way to the summit. It's a cool summit and the views were great. Sierra Del Ajo :y: .We found one of the benchmarks about .3 of a mile away :-k . Not much faster going down but we did stop for cactus removal and JJ hit an extra cool little summit on the way down. The Ajo Loop Drive is a cool drive by itself. JJ even pointed out a Bobcat 8) on the drive out. The only Deer we saw was crossing the street in Ajo :o . Thanks for driving JJ, good times!

We managed a 9am start after leisurely morning in the campground. Mount Ajo Peak didn't disappoint as it had a bit of everything. Cool scrambling, great views, unique rock formations, and awesome 360 view summit. It's a healthy ascent at just under 3000 feet but the reward is worth it. We spent time on the summit enjoying the views, lunch and of course a summit brew :) After that we headed back down and just above Bull Pasture we went off trail in search of supposed spring in the area. Never found the alleged spring box but there was a few small pools near the spring location. It appeared that perhaps a month ago this creek had some light flow in the creek. After off trail excursion we reunited with the trail and meet Angela for the hike back down. But instead of going the same way back we explored the Estes Canyon Trail back to the TH. Great hike...wouldn't mind doing this one again closer to the winter rains and exploring Bull Pasture Spring area and upper Estes Canyon.
