These are my observations from my Ragged Top hike on 1-28-2025
Parking: The turnoff onto the dirt access road is a left turn immediately past a cattle guard 3.6 miles from where Silverbell Rd transitions from paved to dirt road. The access road requires a vehicle with high clearance if you go to the end. There are turnoffs/campsites prior to the end that might allow a lower clearance vehicle to proceed at least part way. Once you get abeam the peak, it doesn't really matter if you park at the end of the road since you will probably be doing a loop anyway.

I contacted BLM regarding the bighorn sheep calving issue. They prefer hikers avoid the area from Jan-Mar but there are no prohibitions. The concern is for harm done to newborns who might be injured fleeing humans. On my hike I saw 3 bighorns at a distance atop one of the lesser peaks. They looked in my direction but otherwise did not react to my presence. Signs of sheep were common throughout the hike.

I hike alone and wore gaiters and took a climbing rope in case I ran into difficulty. Neither was necessary. As others report, there are a lot of cholla waiting for you. One of the best tools for removing cholla is an "afro" or "hair" pick. It is great for clothes, boots, pets and (ouch) skin. I don't go out into the desert without one.

There are a large variety of rocks - some that crumbled to sand, scree, fractured, rotten, and solid boulders. Even some larger rocks displaced under weight; use caution on each step. Surprisingly, the best rock to me was the final ascent to the summit. It was steep but there were solid foot- and handholds that were very solid.

I hike about a 800-1000 miles a year in desert mountains. I encounter rattlesnakes fairly often and rarely place my hands on any rocks. Due to the amount of scrambling I don't think I'd be comfortable doing this hike during the height of snake season. There may not be enough food sources for snakes to thrive on Ragged Top - I don't know how often rattlesnakes are seen here.

I did a clockwise hike, starting from the southeast side. I rarely found anything other than animal trails. Read the other triplogs on this site and review GPS tracks, especially for the final ascent. There is no clear view of the summit as you approach and it would be easy to go astray. As others have reported, the summit is actually much larger and flatter than you would expect.

The north side trail is much more evident and easy to follow, with much less scree - it even has a few cairns. Once you get to the north side of the peak it is a very steep and unrelenting trail.

My ascent from the south and then west took me 3+30, but I'm an old guy (71) and stopped frequently.

I don't remember where I found this video but give representation of the hike. Hat tip HikingEngineer (whoever you are):
[ youtube video ]

The scree and lack of a well-defined trail were drawbacks but the challenge of the hike and the views from the summit made this a memorable and worthwhile hike.

Parked near the graded road and hiked to the saddle between Ragged Top and Wolcott. There is a pretty good trail from the "trailhead" to the saddle, and slightly beyond. It appears to be new, and may be under construction.

We went up Wolcott for a our first of two summits, ate lunch there and then started towards Ragged Top. New trail is being built towards the south gully of Ragged Top, but it wasn't always appearant.

The hike up the south gully is filled with chuparosa and will have a lot of flowers when it warms up.

Summits of both peaks was great, and a lot of snow covered ranged were visible.

Heading down the northwest gully was cold, but stable. Seemed easier than I recall, but then I have done a lot of desert peaks in the last decade. We crossed a lush green wet desert and made it back to my car.

Nice day, decent AEG but few miles. Wolcott adds 500 feet from the saddle, and we did about another 2 miles, or so.

This is a peak that I have been wanting to hike for a while, so I decided to head down toward Tucson and hike this one today.

I went up the "standard" route that gets to the peak from the south, and I went back that way also.

The hike was steep with a lot of loose gravel, which made the going slippery. It was a fun ascent to the summit, with some class 3 climbing at the end. The climb to the summit had a slight bit of exposure, bu the rock was good and there were good handholds and footholds.

There is some nice geology in this area, which made for some awesome scenery along the way and at the summit.

I was originally going to make a loop out of it and descend to the north, but I figured that the devil you know is better than the devil that you don't know, so I went back the way that I came. I imagine that I was as slow or slower going down -- the footing wasn't very good so I was being overly cautious I suppose.

I drove in all the way to the end of the road -- 4WD was not needed but it seemed to me that high clearance was needed. I am not sure if crossover SUV's could make it all the way. If not, there are places to pull over and park.

In spite of the loose footing much of the way, I enjoyed this hike and I might do it again sometime.

Short but sweet. Perfect weather. Perfect day. Pristine Sonoran desert. Very green with all the recent rain. I saw this on the way home from Tucson to AJ and knew I needed to climb it someday. Saturday was that day. Rough terrain with some fun scrambling near the top. But nothing too crazy. Saw lots of birds. A couple black vultures looming over the summit, many swallows zipping by, and several crows amongst others. Unfortunately no bighorn sightings. 🙁
I made a short motion lapse video of the rolling clouds that’s posted on YouTube: [ youtube video ]
High clearance vehicle recommended for last mile or so of drive. But 4 wheel drive is not necessary.

Great place to get away and destress. Had trouble at first getting there, following the Google route on HAZ rather than the written directions. But once I followed the written directions I found my way. The turnoff is an immediate left after the cattle guard and will be ok for a high clearance vehicle without 4WD.

No real trails out there, just a few rough roads and open desert to bushwhack. Did the loop in a clockwise direction, going up the SW gulley and down the NW one. When I started to make the final ascent up to Ragged Top itself, was surprised to encounter two different young couples up there. Enjoyed the peak for nearly an hour to myself.

New territory for both of us.

We both noted that the dirt portion of Silver bell Road was a superhighway compared to the paved portion. We were able to drive in 1 mile closer to Ragged Top, saving 2 miles of RT road walking.

Ragged Top
The off trail path we took was riddled with pokey stuff. I was the lucky host of numerous Cholla. Going CCW we reached our UP, roughly following the Official Track. There was nothing fast about this up. We reached the saddle and the view opened up to the south. I gave the summit a try but got stopped a bit shy.

Prospectors Peak
We spooked a few Javelina on our way to this climb. On top Joe finally took my advice and flew a kite. Clear skies and big views from up here.

Silver Bell 4195
This one was easier than it looked from Prospector.
[ youtube video ]
It was the getting down part that took awhile.

We kicked up a Mule Deer on our way back to the truck.

Action Plan
One of my favorite accountants coined ragged inspiration with his 2014 Rags to Riches Loop. 2 weeks ago Fliver dusted Silver Bell. Ironwood Forest National Monument festered an itch that needed scratching so I whipped up the Billionaire Loop.

Ragged Top
Fun approach. Reminded me of my first love Brown's Peak. Like that first attempt, I'm not ready yet. Just above the saddle I suggested Bruce summit by himself. He got close before changing his vote to pro life.

North up to the saddle was fun. South down the flipside was a smidgen less sketchy steep. The descent included a trick area that made it possible. Nice geology.

Prospectors Peak 3810
The slow 1400 ft ascent put a fork in my masterpiece loop. Before summiting Bruce was already checked out mentally. Time was slipping away too. Worthy peak. If I had to choose, 4195 has better 360 views.

Silver Bell 4195
33 minutes after leaving 3810 we set foot on 4195. That along with real live fliver dust raised our spirits!

Sloth Dragstrip
Logic and spirit pulled the reins on the Billionaire Loop. Descending back to the desert floor sucker punched my three hours of sleep and lack of nutrition. Keeping up with the old geezer was misery. Ragged-Wolcott saddle didn't appeal to either of us. The bajada shuffle around Wolcott felt more like a whipping than a positive trade off.

Synopsis
As figured it was all slow travel. Bruce doesn't love ascents. I'm slow as molasses descending. Tired was the name of the game. This moderate-difficult all off trail hike turned into when will it be over. Bruce unsuccessfully tried to convince me on the drive home that in some parts of the country people call tater tots hushpuppies. He's never wrong so I'm sure as I type he's in Georgia handing out hushtotts.

Drove out at night and car camped with the gf. Beautiful stars out there! It's basically pick your route until the gully going up the south side. Very loose footing the whole way. Endless possibilities to get cholla stuck in your leg so be sure to check your feet! Last scramble to the summit is the most fun, but we also managed to make the way down consist of some climbing too. No bighorn but did see a desert tortoise. Worth while summit that's been on the radar forever, probably won't be back out there though!

I joined Chumley and John on this great little loop hike out at Ironwood NM. I didn't even know an Ironwood National Monument existed before this hike. :)

From the southern saddle, the route up the small chute to the top of the peak is engaging and fun. Descending the northwest gulley tops off the experience.

Great pick Chums!

I had a short window for a Saturday hike, and this one has been knocking for a while.

We did the full loop in much less time than I had planned for based on some of the previous triplogs that had been posted. (Could have easily made it back in time for a ballgame  ).

The mileage isn't long and the terrain doesn't slow you down too much either. Views from up top were nice. If I return here, I'll plan to explore more of the ragged ridgeline or some of the other peaks nearby as BobP once did.

Having never been in the area before, one surprising highlight is how beautiful the surrounding desert is. The drive both to and from was remarkable. Ironwood National Monument is a winner! :)

A prickly and occasionally precarious bushwhack through great, craggy ravines. Every bit as cool (and nasty) as it looks.

I was worried we might have trouble getting in on the dirt roads, but they were in decent shape, and we were able to drive right up to the mountain in my buddy's little Toyota. From there we just aimed for the saddles, and didn't have any trouble finding the route.

Actually hiking it however was not so easy. It's steep, scrappy, and mined with chollas, and the last leg, between the third saddle and the summit, is an exposed scramble, littered with all sorts of loose rock :scared: . I only made it halfway up that part - no shame, I hope, in playing it safe up there. My buddy was more comfortable, so I encouraged him to summit without me, and he banged out the that last 50 yards or so with what appeared to be little trouble.

The route down the Northern Gully was steep and brushy, but straightforward and relatively firm underfoot. There were a good number of dry waterfalls that required the old buttscoot. On the whole, I'd say it was my toughest bushwhack to date (and made tougher by some overzealous hanging out the night before  ). But even without reaching the top there were great views along the way in all directions, and the jagged, almost violent topography was unlike anything I've hiked in the region.

Short hike today, early into it Joseph had a large cholla bomb stuck to him. His feet and mouth were full of thorns too.
Thankfully we were able to remove it all, however his hiking day was over.
To make it up to him, we took him to Sky Bar for pizza and beer.

The young Dr. from Tucson sent me a text and it was on. Lets go Thurs or Friday (last week) how about Tues - Friday this week...no go. It ended up I couldn't go either. We texted back and forth about songs about Ragdolls and then got into deep discussions about White and Grey Matter and then I invoked the Hiphopathalmus and the Unicorn Ganglia. The Amygadalia got involved and the next thing I know we were talking about Kathy Bates and how she kicked Nick in the :pk: . So that's what got me thinking about doing Ragged Top.

I pulled a Desert-Bonnie and didn't take a pre-determined route. The trip up was a 5 in the spicy sauce category. I haven't climbed anything that hard in a long time. But it was wicked cool piecing the puzzle together. A couple scary up climbs and some turn backs and a scary traverse and knowing there is no way I'm going back that way so I have to break thru the layer.
Wicked cool climb but I would recommend the regular safe route.

Views were impressive...

I then headed over to peak 3880 which to my surprise had a summit register.

Next it was Silver Bell Peak 4,195 and its awesome views and two benchmarks...maybe a third but I didn't look for it because I was too busy taking it all in.

I took a different route down and saw some more cool stuff and views.

Next it was off to Wolcott Peak which is across from Ragged. The wind started whippin and the clouds rolled in and it rained but after I was done. It also had rained recently as there was a little standing water in places.

Exceptional day with great company.

A good omen for a good day: I found Hawaiian music on KXCI while driving to pick up Maggie and Jimmie. The music brought me back to my many days on Maui.

We drove across the desert west of the freeway, admiring the saguaro, watching a hawk, enjoying the sunrise. From the trailhead it's a simple matter of cross-country travel through cholla country, up to the saddle just to the south (left) of Ragged Top. At the saddle we looked to our right and, sure enough, a moderate gully headed straight up into the mountain.

We hiked the gully and soon arrived at the top, where you have only three choices: [1] drop down the other side (north) of the gully to return to the desert floor; [2] turn left and climb a tall slot to a summit (oops, sheer vertical); [3] turn right and follow the well-used track upward, finishing through a stretch of third-class lite (fun!).

We signed in to the summit register: "The cholla were relentless . . . Score at halftime: Cholla -- 6; Don, Maggie, Jimmie -- 0". No one comes here in the summer, of course -- no entries between early May and late October.

On the way down the three of us decided to take the north gully for a nice round-trip scramble. We started slippin' and slidin' down the thing -- and it was obvious we weren't the first to do so. No chollas here!

About halfway down the gully, the terrain opens up, so we left the gully and started countouring cross-country to the east. We ambled over four or five minor shoulders and gullies until we finally spotted the trailhead. A few cold beers brought the scramble to a fine conclusion.

2 hours up, 1-1/2 hours on top, 1-1/2 hours down.

This wasn't the original trip planned since it was a little windy in the Gila Box area this weekend - so Ironwood here we come. Since we had a little weather this week, it was a tad bit cooler, allowing us to do this warm desert hike.

I didn't think I'd ever do Ragged Top again, let alone so quickly after my last trip (back in February). Both Belinda and I got stuck with teddy bear chollas. Ouch. The "trail" was overgrown; however, we didn't see, hear, or otherwise witness any snakes. Joel and Belinda both saw bighorn sheep. I just saw sheep droppings. Spent the night camping down the road with a nearly full moon lighting up the sky. (If these flowers ever slow down, I might be able to speed up on these hikes!)

Well I went on down to the Silver Bells to have some fun and boy did I. Went for a triple peak header today doing Silver Bell Peak in the morning and then on to Wolcott Peak and then Ragged Top. Started off on the eastern side which I made more of a trek than I should have, but traversed the side to Wolcott Peak and made my way up to this little summit that hardly sees any people on it for some reason. Wolcott will need a new register up top if anyone wants to venture up there soon. Scouted the southern side of Ragged Top and thought it would be very good to make my way up. Well besides running into a few vertical walls, I was able to find a great route with some good class 4 climbs and made my way up top from the seldom seen southern side. Great views and I wasn't the only one up top today as I saw someone on top from Wolcott and then of course looking in the register confirmed it. Went down the eastern side which cliffed me out once and I had to make a scary down climb in one section right into a thick brushy area where everything growing had thorns on it to tear me up. I was starting to have Iron Mt. flashbacks in this section and was glad to finally get out of it and down the mountain. Would love to climb other sides of Ragged Top, this has to be one of my new favorites now. Great day.

Did this as a clockwise loop, approaching from the east and descending down the northwest side. A short, tough, total bushwhack hike. Lots of cholla to watch out for down low, some serious scrambling near the top, and loose rock/scree everywhere. Very dramatic desert peak.
