Intended to get some hiking in on the AZT, have not done this section before. 1/2 mile into the hike, twisted my ankle pretty good and hit the ground. Thought the hike was over but as I started to limp back to the truck, I was able to bear weight OK, so I decided to go ahead and do some hiking anyway as a test. Hiked as far as the Sycamore Creek crossing, cut over to the road and ambled back to the TH. I'll have to come back another day to get more of this sections in. Aside from the injury, the weather was great, the trail is in great condition.

Common sense and forecasted warm weather scored victories on Friday night, and Boulder Mountain replaced the Cedar double as the choice for Saturday, with a few different route options on the table to hit the high point on Boulder and beyond. We started from Round Valley at 7AM and hiked up FR 1704 for a few miles with lots of shade and pleasant temps, steadily gaining elevation.

At ~3.5 miles, we left the road and started the steeper climb up toward the ridgeline of Boulder Mountain. Not surprisingly, there were plenty of boulders along the way. After some scrambling and brush-dodging, we took a break partway up the ridge before it got a littler steeper. Closer to the top, great views of snowy Four Peaks opened up, and after a push through some manzanita, we reached 6320. We identified a few landmarks, took a break, and I added a summit register.

Bob decided to make it an out-and-back but generously offered to pick up chumley and me so we could hike the full ridgeline of Boulder Mountain. We called an audible and coordinated plans for Bob to pick us up from Bushnell Tanks--of all the potential route combos on the table the night before, this wasn't one of them, but it worked out great. Bob headed back down to the west, and chumley and I headed east across the ridgeline.

There were plenty of areas with thick brush as we worked our way through alternating sections of live and dead manzanita and varying degrees of fire damage, but the ridgeline was the highlight of the hike. Great views of Four Peaks, a little scrambling, a few small patches of snow, cool geology, and some un-torched ponderosas made it worth every scratch. Given the terrain, we kept a solid pace across the ridge and connected with the AZT in two hours, after a quick detour to a scenic overlook where chumley showcased his Picasso-like artistic prowess.

With 9.5+ miles to go on the AZT, chumley texted Bob and let him know we should be out in three hours. We enjoyed views of Roosevelt early on and cruised through the mostly downhill miles, with a few short breaks, a quick chat with two backpackers, and a stop at Boulder Pools. Along the way, we had very pleasant views looking back up at the Boulder ridgeline with the ponderosas and scattered snow patches.

We finished off the route along Sycamore Creek, back to Bushnell Tanks five minutes ahead of schedule, where Boulder BobP and our chariot awaited. Fun group and a great day--thank you to BobP for driving/waiting and for planning, and to chumley for interrupting a nap to re-plan and re-re-plan when Cedar was out :) .

A group of us parked at the Bushnell Tank gate and took the short connector to the AZT. We split into 2 groups one group brushed south and the other group went north. There were small patches of snow here and there. Trail is now clear from the highway south to Sycamore creek crossing.

Year 13 in the NYE hikes Denny and I started on 12/31/2010. The stars aligned and we were able to do the hike actually on NYE.

The cast this year, the largest we've ever had, Denny, Wally, JJ, John, Ray, Linda, my sons Ben & Rob along with his wife Lindsy. Back after an extended absence Dave.

After much deliberation we settled on a hike none of us had done before... A trip to Boulder Bob's Cabin ruins.

We started from the Bushnell Tanks TH to a pleasantly brisk morning. We made our way over to the nice tread of the AZT#21, where we roller coastered our way past the used car lot. The part I was slightly concerned about was the Boulder Bob Trail heading up to the saddle. From photos I saw from past hikes, it looked thick and overgrown. Getting to the trail from the AZT will be better accessed using our track heading down. There is an obvious trail once you cross the 2 washes.

We took a little break at the saddle to allow the group to become a group again.

Heading down towards the cabin area, there are numerous use trails and once again, our track back will be a better one to use.

In the area that I had a waypoint for the cabin, there is quite the buildup of retaining walls and also a small ruin structure, built with rock and mortar, including a window. We originally thought this was the cabin ruin.

On the return trip we checked out the unique arrastra, a stone dam, the actual ruin site as was evidenced by the remains of the bottle wall, and a stand alone fireplace a short distance away.

On the way back we took a detour past the used car lot and headed to a mine. We all headed in a good distance until someone announced the heard running water in the distance, That running water as we got closer, turned out to be a very healthy/thick diamondback, blocking any further progress into the mine.

The Boulder Bob Trail back to a couple of FR's to complete our balloon loop.

Thanks all for a great turnout and an interesting hike. Happy New Year all HAZers

Bruce picked another nice one for our end of the year hike. We had a fun group join us as well.
The Boulder Bob area was pretty interesting and it would be cool to know more about him. It was nice to have Bruce’s track as it was overgrown and faint in places. Johnlp, Dave, and Linda clipped some as they hiked. Thank you!! We had been by the car graveyard but the mine was new to us. The guard was a little cranky but he warned us up front. 😳😁. It was a great group and a very enjoyable outing!! Nice one to end the year!!Thanks everyone! Like HAZ, you rock!! Happy New Year to all the Hazers, family and friends!!

The hike was a great choice. It exceeded my expectations. The Boulder Creek/AZT #21 section was first rate. The grind up and over Boulder Pass (and back) left my knees sore, but it was quite fun nonetheless. The Boulder Bob's Cabin area was simply awesome. "Builder Bob" might be a better name; that guy was busy. The early settlers were definitely a hardy lot. I didn't see much of the mine - I was the last one in and the first out  when word of a twitchy resident trickled back. JJ and LP did some extended exploration above the mine shaft. The rest of us moved on, but they move like the wind and quickly rejoined the group.

We took some forest roads back to the trailhead. This afforded us all some side-by-side time to catch up. Bruce kept his teasing in check for the most part, but when he stepped over the line, Linda was quick to put him in his place. Nice to see @Dave1 again.

It was a great time. I couldn't think of a better way to ring in the New Year.

Another New Years Eve hike and all sorts of fun hikers in the group this year, plus Bruce. Some new territory for me, which was a bonus.

Cool temps as we headed out from the Bushnell Tanks TH and hopped onto a segment of the AZT. Easy hiking, with nice views. Wally pointed out Mt Ord off to our left. The offtrail was our biggest climb of the day, but the route was better than anticipated. Enough catclaw to grab your attention (and clothing, long pants were helpful), but nothing terrible. I brought clippers just in case, but they really weren’t needed, although Dave used them to widen the path for the shorts wearing crowd. Lots of quartz dotted the ground.

Quick break at the saddle, then we descended the other side in search of the no longer there cabin. Some of us spotted a chimney to the left, but we continued on to the area a bit farther that was marked as the cabin location. Some terraced paths above the creekbed, and an old wall with a window remained. There was a spot with barbed wire and rock that looked like an old corral or pen. Lots of rock was placed around this area, but nothing resembling a cabin. Boulder Bob was more like Bob the Builder given the amount of rock he moved around.

After some pics, we meandered over towards the rock chimney, passing an arrastra and more rock walls along the way. Johnlp found the cabin footprint just south of the chimney, including some of what was left of glass bottles mortared into the walls. From there, we took a slightly better route back up and over the saddle. Once back on the trail, we retraced our steps over to some abandoned cars, the decided to check out the mine.

The mines were a short detour south of our trail, following an old roadbed gently uphill. Most of the group went into the mine ahead of me. I’m generally very claustrophobic, so being last in and first out works well for me. The adit was tall enough to almost stand upright, and the first thing I noticed was how warm it was in there, which made me wonder what might be living in such a cozy place. As I caught up with the group, who had stopped maybe 100’ in, I heard what sounded like running water. A split second later, I realized it was a rattlesnake I was hearing, and that’s why everyone had stopped. After seeing its eyes reflecting off someone’s light, I said a few choice words and turned right around. Once out of the mine, JJ said it was a huge dback. On our way back to the main trail, Johnlp looked at another adit Denny & I had noticed higher on the hill, and JJ walked up some of the higher road.

The rest of us continued up the planned route on an old, eroded road then dropped down to a corral on FR22 which looked to still be in use. From there, it was an easy road walk back to the trailhead, passing tons of huge sycamore trees. A couple of easy creek crossings along the way. Saw two other hikers and their chonky blue heeler.

Fun day with some nice territory. Great conversation within the group and it was good to see everyone again. Thank you to Bruce & Denny for organizing and for the invitation.

I would have to say of all the New Years hikes I have been on with the HAZ folks this one was absolutely the best so far. I had fears of being attacked by catclaw and possibly freezing to death but the catclaw was manageable and the temps were just about perfect. I had heard about Bolder Bob's cabin before but had never ventured back to find it. It was cool to see all the relics. My favorite part was the wall where he had included bottles to allow light to come in. I also enjoyed looking at the old cars (which I had seen previously while doing the AZT) as well as going to the mine.

Super fun group of people and great hike. Happy New Year Everyone!

13th annual new years hike, promulgated by the Tortoise & Eagle.
Good group this year, on a hike none of us had done prior.
Trails are in good condition, much better than I anticipated save the AZT.
Lots to see in the Boulder Bob cabin area. We also stopped at a mine on the return. A Dback told us we had gone far enough onto the mine this day.
Fun hike. Thanks all. Happy new year! :)

A group of us finished clearing brush (mostly catclaw) along AZT 21. With the help of volunteers and a few hitches by ACE this passage is now clear from Highway 89 to FR 422 ( ~8 miles ).

With a generous ride offer from a friend, I was finally able to continue my years-long quest to section run the AZT. This time, Pine Mountain. Wasn't thrilled about having to run ~11 miles of road, but it turned out not to be too bad, with only one obnoxious group of OHVs encountered (at the Four Peaks Rd junction). Once past the Roosevelt junction, I didn't encounter any vehicles, and only a single person (a hunter).

The views were quite nice, especially in the Pine Mtn area. The Pine Creek area wasn't as pretty as I expected. And Boulder Creek was also not very pretty. Wasn't a fan, but at least got it out of the way.

Sycamore Creek was a welcome sight, yellow/orange sycamores, and a little bit of flow. This is probably a one-and-done passage for me.

This was my 3rd crack at this passage and the one where I finally finished it off. Last week I did the dirt roads from Pidgeon Springs TH, 13 years ago I did the Boulder Creek Trail from 87, this week I did the in between sections I hadn't hiked yet. I still have the GPS track from 13 years ago, so I knew exactly where to stop on the way down.

I drove out to FR422 to its junction with FR463, which has a parking spot right there and is about a quarter mile from where I left of last week. On the way in, Wally complained about the washboarding on FR143. On the way back after driving 422, we both laughed at how smooth the washboarding now seemed. 422 is pretty gnarly. there are 2 to 3 really tough spots, but you just need to take your time. Never needed a spotter, but it is slow going and really rocky. On the way in, I actually had to use the locking differential on the Xterra for the first time since I can't remember when. For as old as that vehicle is now, I'm very proud of how it handled the road and was still a smooth ride once we got to pavement. The drive in and out on 422 was as much of an adventure at the hike was. Much less traffic on this road this Saturday compared to last Saturday. It seems as though elk season ended as the majority of who I saw last week were hunters.

Hiking 422 from the junction of 463 to the singletrack is not level. It starts level for a bit, then has a short climb, then a big drop. Then you drop another 1000' on the singletrack to where we stopped. We spotted 2 deer on 422 far below us for a bit, but didn't manage to get any pics before left the road and went down a hill into the brush. Some spots on 422 were smooth, but the steep spots have eroded and look like some more gnarly driving.

Boulder Creek Trail goes uphill from 422 briefly over a knob and then descends into the canyon. There are a couple of switchbacks to the bottom, then it parallels the dry creek, crossing it a few times. The views up to the top of the canyon slopes are nice. The south side has a lot of ponderosas. Once section of the trail near the creek is very overgrown and in need of some trail maintenance. It's not horrible, but it could be in a few years.

The views at the high point of 422 have the best views. then along the top of Boulder Creek Trail are nice looking down into the canyon all the way down to the Beeline.

Only wildlife we saw was the deer from the distance during the hike. On the way back on 422 we saw a doe that waited until we were almost right on top of it before it decided to run in front us.

The ride back down 143 always seems to go faster than on the way up. This time it seemed way easier than I remember it being in a long time. Long day, but a very well spent day. Temps were a bit warm when the direct sunlight hit. Any shade or clouds made a big difference in cooling things off.

The road was rough. The trail was good. The views were nice. Not much fuana to be seen but a few deer from afar. The hiking was warm in the sun but nice when a cloud intervened of and on. I typed a better triplog but it deleted somehow before I saved it. Someday I'll learn not to do that.

I started at the Pidgeon Springs Trailhead and hiked the roads northbound for 8 miles and turned around. For just hiking on the dirt roads, the hike was still very enjoyable. The views up there are phenomenal, being able to see from the Estrellas over to the Sierra Ancha/Salome Wildernesses and glimpses of the Mogollon Rim. The cooler weather also helped immensely, feeling the relief of the summer heat finally being gone. The wind was also kicking in pretty good at times, which kept it cool when the temperature got to the upper 70s.

Didn't see any hikers or bikers for the entire time, but I did see several hunters and 4x4ers. On my way back, I saw two hunters at their side by side they parked along the road, they had just bagged an elk and were relaxing. Also saw a game warden on the way in who got out of his truck and talked with me for a few minutes. Several hunters who were driving the road stopped to talk with me and were actually very interested that I was hiking the AZT there. They may not have known that road is part of it.

FR422 has some gnarly sections, there's about 4 of them. Most are steep and rocky sections, and one section has a seriously deep rut that narrows the road. I wouldn't put this road in the FR213 category, but it's a little worse than FR143 and maybe FR172A. the road actually has quite a lot of traffic and when I got the chance to see some vehicles actually navigate some of those sections, it didn't look too bad. I'm thinking to go back and drive that road out to where I left off and finish up this section.

FR143 seemed to be in better shape than it was when I last drove it in Jan22. Seems like some grading and even minor repair has taken place. the one hairpin above Mud Springs at the drainage crossing used to be really bad, now it's pretty mild. The rocky section between that and Mud Springs is still just as bad and likely will be long after we're all dead and gone.

Got home in time to see the big landfill fire off the Beeline. From the 202 exit for Higley Road I could see the flames.

We cleared brush (mostly catclaw, yuck!), built drains and did a little rock work. Covered the area from Sycamore Creek to the AZT gate about 2 miles in. 32F when we started and 54F when we got back.

Early end to 2022, and for my customary Mazzy year-ender I went back to Boulder. Started the year by looping Pine Mountain, so there was some poetry in ending by looping its little brother. Followed in the 2014 footsteps of @BiFrost and sent their route to RS. Timed right, this route is one of the best ways to spend a day in Central AZ. Jumped on this one as the cold front finished up. Went CCW an hour and a half before sunrise.

Wrote about this in January, but Ballantine is largely no good past the corral. So it was creek bed until the climb out, where the trail picks up until the ridge. After that, got off track before Rock Tank. Gets easier to follow after as the trail heads into the pines toward the AZT connector.

The very top of the connector is gone, so I headed straight up to the road. There's a barbed wire fence the way I went, but it seemed easier than the alternatives. Clouds passed overhead and storms built to the west as I walked the road. Decided if the ridgeline wasn't covered in clouds by the time I got there, there was no way I would turn back. The sky was cloudy and darkening over everywhere but Boulder, so I took it as a sign and headed up the ridge.

It's a bushwhack around the boulders until the first saddle. Then the route enters the Bush Fire perimeter. The only burned pines are around the first saddle. The mountainside is a nice and easy walk under the green, green pines until the third saddle, where in years prior to 2020 the route became a significant bushwhack. Maybe the only good thing to come out of that fire is that the brushy sections of the Boulder Mountain ridgeline mostly burned. It was almost disappointingly easy. Still tough so many miles in. There's one notable scramble before the final climb to the summit. Other than that the terrain wasn't too bad, mostly piney or burned away.

Made the summit, and like in 2019 I only go to enjoy it for about a half hour before the rain clouds started to roll in. By the time I made Pipeline, the mountain and ridgeline were swallowed up. Took a break at the cabin, and proceeded to Ballantine and down. Awesome cloudy sunset made for a great finish.

Working on the Arizona Trail, and this section had been closed for some time after the fire in the 4 Peaks wilderness. With good weather, now seemed like an opportune time to hike passages 20 and 21. So after spending the night near Sunflower, we drove up El Oso road and hiked passage 21. Then the next day we drove to passage 20 and hiked back to our car at El Oso road, making for a pretty simple two-car shuttle, and only once driving up El Oso road!
The first part of this hike is simply following a dirt road for 8 miles. That's not a bad thing, especially when you're trying to make easy miles on the AZT! There wasn't much road traffic, just one ATV that drove by, but I hear it can be pretty crowded with 4-wheelers on popular weekends. Having never been to the 4 Peaks Wilderness before, I thought the views were pretty good, and was impressed by the ability to see north to the Mazatzals and Mt Ord, south to the Superstitions, Mt Lemmon, etc. and east to the Sierra Ancha and Mt Baldy.
Then after the section on the dirt road, the "singletrack" trail starts and takes you all the way to Sunflower. Being such a long hike, it kind of all blends together, and nothing really stands out in my memory. For as long as the hike was, the level of effort was pretty minimal and I didn't feel at all exhausted at the end.

Saturday was the last of several work events to move the AZT off washed out, rocky, ditched alignment south of Sycamore Creek. The segment steward organized these events and several hardy crews got it done. The catclaw was relentless but we defeated it. Congratulations and thank you, John M.
