I had two goals on this hike. First, I wanted to check out the damage from the 2024 West fire, and second, I wanted to finish trimming the East Rim Trail that I'd started last year.

A dozen cars were parked at the Pine trailhead at 7 a.m., but I only saw one person all day. It was a glorious 64 degrees to start. I headed down the Highline and made the turn up Donahue. It's a tad steep, but luckily, it was in the shade most of the way.

A bit of a road walk on FR218, which has had gravel laid down since the last time I was up here. It looks to be by the same people who did the Rim Road. I wonder if they plan on thinning up here too?

I took FR9382L to the rim and then began my off-trail route to the top of the East Rim Trail, navigating around the nubile locust growth.

The East Rim Trail drops 1,100 feet in three-quarters of a mile to the Pine Canyon Trail. It took me 1.75 hours to get down, completing my trimming as I went. It should be clear sailing from top to bottom now.

On the Pine Canyon Trail, it was a bit of a grind with the temps now in the low 90s.

I'm glad the fire damage was not as bad as I'd feared and that my trimming was complete on the East Rim Trail.

I hiked this section of the trail 15 years ago but either I lost the track or never saved it. It's been so long and I only hiked it once that I basically have no memory of the particulars of hiking the trail.

Got the Geronimo TH just after 7am and headed out shortly after. The weather was very cool to start and the sun low in the sky helped with creating shade with the trees. Lots of nice views of the Rim above and sometimes of the forest of ponderosas below, as well as a few glimpses of the Mazatzals, Four Peaks, and Ord.

Lots of parts of this trail were worked on a few years ago by the AZT staff and several spots were rerouted, I think to make it easier for bikers. I have no objection to that, but repeating a prior complaint, there seems to be a trend where the reroutes add mileage unnecessarily. What the GPS tracks told me was 6.5 miles one way turned out to be 8 miles. I took the old alignments on the way back and even with the sticks and rock they put in the way, I saved time and mileage taking these older routes. At the very least they should update the mileage on these sections sooner than later after they do the work on them. :SB: :M2C:

It got a little toasty by the time I finished, but not like the desert heat in Phoenix. I felt my legs starting to cramp a bit on the way home, so I had a couple extra Gatorades then to hydrate.

I've hiked all of this passage already, except for the almost half mile from the Rim Road to the General Springs TH. I save all my GPS tracks of every hike I do on my computer, so I can't have that gap when I look at my AZT progress. Also, even though I've hiked all the Highline Trail portion of this passage, I seem to have lost the track for that. it turns out they've done some extensive maintenance and re-routes on that section, but more on that later. :SB:

I started from the Washington Park TH and headed up the Colonel Devin to my main goal. I did this hike with my wife and kids 14 years ago :o, so it was interesting to be back again. Crazy how time flies. I think the kids did better then they would today, as they no longer have the patience to spend a day with a parent on a vision quest dayhike.

Less than a half mile in there was a cow next to the trail in the vegetation. Not used to seeing that. the beginning up this trail was very cool, almost chilly, and very shady. the vegetation as well as being in a canyon with the sun low in the sky helped with this. the creek was running nicely, which made for the rare pleasant experience of hearing running water while hiking in AZ. Very big contrast from Phoenix right now.

As I got higher the weather stayed cool and the wind picked up. I made it to General Springs, walked a bit further up the trail to make sure my tracks overlapped, and headed back. I also checked out the cabin, which is in very nice shape. On the way back down the trail, the wind was still pretty strong which made me have to take off my hat at times to avoid losing it. : rambo :

Went up to check out the railroad tunnel like we did in 2011. I forgot how dicey the trail is at the final ascent, very loose dirt and rock and nearly vertical. I checked the triplog from then and I noted the conditions as the same then. I have very dim memories and can't imagine now how we got the kids up and back along that section 8-[ .

From the railroad tunnel back to the trailhead was when I saw the most foot traffic. Lots of people on their way up. Saw 3 deer a half mile from the TH, 2 young bucks in felt and one doe. I hid behind a tree because I saw them first but I was soon spotted. They all stood and stared at me giving me time to get pics until I decided to start walking, then they bolted.

Ate lunch in my car at the trailhead and then headed out on the Highline westbound to get a track of the AZT that I've made by hiking it. I originally split the overall track at the 3 mile mark planning to only do 3 miles out and back. With the cooler weather than I expected, I decided to make it a 4 mile out and back. I did both a 4 mile out and back and got to the exact point where I had split the track at 3 miles. Why? Because this section of the Highline/AZT has several re-routes which after only 3 miles adds an extra mile. Some of these reroutes made sense. there was less elevation gain and in at least one case better views. However, I think even on the AZT website, the maps that show this passage are nearly the same as the AZT26 track on HAZ, which can give misleading info for the length of the hike if you're planning a dayhike. I was fine, but I can see how this has potential to cause problems for planning purposes. :SB: :M2C: On the way back I paid attention and hiked the old alignment, which is still there and still hikeable even with the sticks and rocks in place to try to hide it.

The views to the south along the Highline here of the vast ponderosa forest were a highlight. Very cool to see that after being in the desert heat so much lately. The other highlight was crossing Chase Creek, which is more of a small stream. There is sign there that states that fishing is not permitted. After seeing that I looked into a pool by the trail crossing and noticed several very small trout swimming there. I can't imagine anyone wanting to try to fish for something so small, but the sign is there for a reason obviously.

A group of us started from Mail creek and went up 4 or 5 switchbacks and did tread work. Went further up the trail to the rollover and along the next reroute to the creek crossing clearing rocks and brush. After that we armored a drain on the way back.

A group of us returned to Red Rock Spring trail to work on the Highline section of the AZ trail.
Two of us installed some new signs at the Red Rock / Highline junction. Then we brushed trail west for ¾ mile or so.
We saw 8 thru hikers including "Remy" from France.

A group of us returned to the reroute south of Geronimo TH. The contractor had finished up building the trail. Our main task was “finishing work”. This includes: raking the tread to remove rocks, knock down berms on the downside edge, smooth and remove rocks from the back-slope, remove any left over ribbons, and move brush as far from the new trail as feasible (preferably out of sight).
Finished up in a little under 6 hours :) Got a little rain driving back along Control Road and HWY 87.

The existing AZT and Highline trails bypass the Washington Park trailhead by skirting around the north side and have a couple of short connector trails to the trailhead. Forest Service asked if we could reroute the trail to go through trailhead and obliterate the old route.

We moved 3 signs, a sign in box and obliterated the old trail. In addition we improved the tread, trimmed up some trees and removed a deadfall.

We wanted to check the springs that we worked on earlier this year (Red Rock Spr and Pine Spr) to see if the West fire caused any issues. There wasn’t any substantial damage to the springs. On the return we did some tread work and brushing.

A group of us (by FS request) checked the AZT damage from the West fire. Specifically, checking the reroute that we corridor brushed late last year. The contractor is due to start the trail building soon. A lot of the flagging had disappeared (burned) or faded and was hard to spot. We re-flagged the 5 sections of the reroute.
Overall the damage isn’t terrible but there were a few sections of total moonscape. A major issue could be rain and the subsequent high erosion that may cause.

Pump Station Route, lame, not worth it, unless you hike some of it (maybe half mile) from the north side (Highline) to the red slickrock section. Colonel Devin is nicer (barely) than See Canyon Spring.

We went back to pine spring. The collector had refilled a little less than half - good news. Decided to drain it again and clear out more sediment in the hope this would improve the flow into the collector. We will return in 2+ weeks to assess if that helped.
We also “rock paved” the trail crossing across the wet area that is below the collector and the wooden box.
