Surprisingly, I had never hiked any portion of the Highline Trail before, so when S mentioned it to get away from the valley heat I was in. We decided to start at the Washington Park TH (which was empty when we arrived) and hike west. It was a bit chilly with a breeze and some clouds when we started, spending a couple of minutes at the East Fork of the Verde before heading west.

Overall, the trail was in great shape (with a very short stretch in the 2025 Washington burn area), which was nice and clear. About 3/4 of a mile in, we crossed a road to private property with an American Conservation Experience truck and trailer parked (we would see their camp further down the trail, but did not see them). Along the way, the foliage changes from Pine to Juniper and Manzanita (some of them huge!). We hiked 5.5 miles in, stopping for a quick break before heading back. As we started back, we encountered our only people of the day, a couple on mountain bikes, who started from Flagg in the morning and were going to stop at Pine for the evening. As we continued, the clouds started to darken, and we heard our first boom of thunder in the distance. Not overly concerned as the thunder sounded a good distance away, however, about 15 minutes later, the wind really picked up, and the booms of thunder became more frequent and a lot closer. Then it started to sprinkle, which turned into a heavy downpour. We took cover under a couple of Pines, which kept us a little dry, but after 10 minutes and no end in sight, we decided to keep going. That's about the time the peak of the storm hit us with heavy rain, wind, and flashes of lightning and thunder directly overhead. We continued for a short distance, finding another small cover spot, trying to wait for at least the lightning to pass. Waiting for a short period of time, we hadn't heard any booms for about 5 minutes, so we continued in the rain. The trail was already turning muddy, which added to the fun, making it back to the Washington Park just as the rain stopped. I think there was like a 10% chance of showers, so of course it hit us directly overhead :pout:.

Still a nice hike, although really cold when the storm came with no jacket. There have been a good number of reroutes; it appears that we were off the trail per Route Scout, but we were definitely on it 100% of the time. I would definitely like to continue hiking the Highline in the future. Thanks, S, for all of the fun.

With warm weather in the valley, and a desire for an easier day, sights were set to the Highline Trail - I've hiked a little of it, but had not hiked this section. After reviewing trail descriptions, I figured the best thing to do would be to head to the Washington Park TH and do an out and back, covering as much ground as we cared to.

The drive up was uneventful - we arrived at the trailhead, finding it empty of any other vehicles. The air temperatures were in the low 60s with a slight breeze and overcast skies - it was so nice to feel a little chill in the air! Before heading off on our hike, we stopped to read the sign at the trailhead describing the history of the Washington Park region, and ambled down to the bridge crossing the East Verde for some photos.

We turned back to head off on the AZT / Highline trail towards the Pine TH, stopping briefly to peruse the completely full trail register (literally completely full, and could do with a swap out along with a few writing utensils). The trail is in good condition - moving from one type of mixed forest to another. It was interesting walking through sections of mixed pine and oak to switch to juniper and manzanita and back again. Some sections of the trail reminded me of sedona with red rock and clay underfoot with manzanita dominating. The size of some of the trees were really impressive - it was great to be able to wander in unburned forest, with near constant birdsong for accompaniment.

After passing through a recently burned region near the Unnamed Fork of Chase Creek that looks to be recovering with loads of ferns, we caught sight of a bunch of tents, but never wound up crossing paths with the group (likely from American Conservation Experience, since we passed a truck and trailer parked along the road where the trail crosses). The trees in the region look to have taken a light scorching, but luckily the fire in this area near the trail did not seem to burn hot enough for total devastation.

We continued hiking in, deciding to turn back after covering about 5.5 miles. After we started back, we saw a couple on mountain bikes heading towards Pine, after having started out from Flagstaff. As we hit an open section, it became evident that the clouds were getting darker and it wasn't much longer afterwards when we heard the unmistakeable rumble of thunder in the distance. Somehow, as our luck would have it, the low chance of precipitation materialized overhead - but instead of a simple spring shower, it was a full out thunderstorm with high winds, a decent deluge, with thunder and lightening directly overhead 😬. We were able to get a little bit of shelter from the worst of it by stopping in a wooded section. Temperatures plummeted with the arrival of the storm - luckily I had thought to throw my long sleeved shirt in my pack - that combined with a rain jacket was sufficient to keep me comfortable as we continued on.

Happily, the thunder and lightening was relatively short lived, but the heavy clay content underfoot made the tread a little trecherous in places, becoming super slick after becoming saturated. We made it back to the trailhead as the rain tapered off and were able to clean up and get into some dry clothes before heading back down towards the valley. The trail, for the most part is in good repair, save for one deadfall that we were able to easily hop over. When comparing to the reference track, there have been several reroutes - we were able to catch glimpses of what might have been the old tread, but the path we were on was well established and worn the entire way.

Unanticipated thundershower aside, it was nice to get out of the heat. At some point, I'll have to continue on more sections of the Highline. Thanks, J, for joining!

Wildlife: evidence of elk, coyote, and perhaps a small cat. Lots of birdsong, a surprising number of red velvet ants, and some butterflies.

Other People: the two mountain bikers - and definitely a large-ish group was out in the area given the size of the camp we passed, but we didn't see or hear them while we were hiking.

A group of us cleared a dozen+ deadfall along the Highline between Mail creek and Chase creek. Saw no one else. Lots of sign of deer, elk and bear. A few small patches of snow. Weather was chilly at the start (32F) and okay at the end (49F).

Wally and I started from the Pine TH and hiked eastbound to where I saw the 2 main tracks for the AZT no longer were on different paths. This segment of the AZT has been extensively rerouted in several places and it appears that I've covered all of that now. Every spot where the tracks and/or old topo mapping indicated the old Highline/AZT trail was we saw signs of where the old trail was covered up, or attempted to be. We took the new alignment all the way out and then for the big switchback we took the shortcut through the old alignment of the trail. It's a little bit of a bushwhack walking over the branches and loose rock, but nothing worse than most of the trails in the eastern Supes.

About a mile in we saw a small herd of elk, 2 bulls, 2 calves, and 4 or 5 cows. One bull had a big rack and the other was a spike. The spike seemed to have more felt but the bigger one had most of the felt gone, with a few scraps hanging from the antlers.

On our way back along the AZT we hiked down and back on the Red Rock Springs trail. It was very rocky thru most of it, expecially compared to the recent work done on the AZT. The new work on the AZT makes it very easy to hike on, it's just that some of the switchback are excessive. Skipping the big one on the way back saved us over a mile. I think this has mainly been done to make it more bike friendly. We did notice that the climb the first 3 miles was about 800' and we barely noticed that we climbed that high.

On the way back we also hiked another old alignment of the Highline Trail that is signed near the trailhead.

Temps were cool the whole time, actually a bit chilly when we started. First 3 miles were in the shade and after that it was never actually hot. it felt warmer at the bottom of the Red Rock Springs Trail than along the AZT, probably due to the elevation difference.

I had two goals on this hike. First, I wanted to check out the damage from the 2024 West fire, and second, I wanted to finish trimming the East Rim Trail that I'd started last year.

A dozen cars were parked at the Pine trailhead at 7 a.m., but I only saw one person all day. It was a glorious 64 degrees to start. I headed down the Highline and made the turn up Donahue. It's a tad steep, but luckily, it was in the shade most of the way.

A bit of a road walk on FR218, which has had gravel laid down since the last time I was up here. It looks to be by the same people who did the Rim Road. I wonder if they plan on thinning up here too?

I took FR9382L to the rim and then began my off-trail route to the top of the East Rim Trail, navigating around the nubile locust growth.

The East Rim Trail drops 1,100 feet in three-quarters of a mile to the Pine Canyon Trail. It took me 1.75 hours to get down, completing my trimming as I went. It should be clear sailing from top to bottom now.

On the Pine Canyon Trail, it was a bit of a grind with the temps now in the low 90s.

I'm glad the fire damage was not as bad as I'd feared and that my trimming was complete on the East Rim Trail.

I hiked this section of the trail 15 years ago but either I lost the track or never saved it. It's been so long and I only hiked it once that I basically have no memory of the particulars of hiking the trail.

Got the Geronimo TH just after 7am and headed out shortly after. The weather was very cool to start and the sun low in the sky helped with creating shade with the trees. Lots of nice views of the Rim above and sometimes of the forest of ponderosas below, as well as a few glimpses of the Mazatzals, Four Peaks, and Ord.

Lots of parts of this trail were worked on a few years ago by the AZT staff and several spots were rerouted, I think to make it easier for bikers. I have no objection to that, but repeating a prior complaint, there seems to be a trend where the reroutes add mileage unnecessarily. What the GPS tracks told me was 6.5 miles one way turned out to be 8 miles. I took the old alignments on the way back and even with the sticks and rock they put in the way, I saved time and mileage taking these older routes. At the very least they should update the mileage on these sections sooner than later after they do the work on them. :SB: :M2C:

It got a little toasty by the time I finished, but not like the desert heat in Phoenix. I felt my legs starting to cramp a bit on the way home, so I had a couple extra Gatorades then to hydrate.
