Attending a friend's funeral scuttled plans for a long Saturday day hike, so we pivoted to a quick overnighter in the Supes with a mid-afternoon start.

Got on the trail from the Canyon Lake Marina around 2:30 pm. The lot there is signed as reserved for Marina slip owners, but there are 10 signed/designated spots for hikers on the south end of the lot. All 10 were full when we arrived, but we parked next to the 10, and there was plenty of parking generally. I don't recall seeing signed/designated hiker spots in my previous hikes here, so I thought I'd mention it.

Temps were in the low/mid 80s at the start. Warm, but a slight breeze kept things tolerable on the initial climb. There are two routes to the top of the initial hill. A fair amount of work has been put in to obscure/discourage use of the more direct route, though I'm not sure why.

Just past the first hill, we ran into a returning day hiker who asked where we planned to camp. When we mentioned La Barge Box, he said he was there earlier in the day and two guys were already occupying the main site next to the big pool. I was a little bummed but figured, we could manage another option.

Our day hiker also convinced us it was better to take the longer route to La Barge Box around the Battleship, rather than taking the shorter bushwhack up La Barge Creek. I've done that bushwhack before, but not with a backpack, and not with the creek running.

As we hiked and the sun went down, it lit up the westward facing cliffs and mountains with amazing colors. The abundant water provided many "reflection" photo opportunities.

Going over the Battleship saddle is a route/adventure. A fairly developed route has developed, but it took us a little poking around to find it on the climb up.

Arriving at La Barge box, we met and talked briefly with the two guys at the main site. The large pool was full--definitely good for a swim, if desired. The two guys offered to share the site, but we opted to continue around the corner and camp on the slick rock. Not normally something I would do or recommend in this area, if there were any chance of rain. As it was, it turned out to be an excellent spot--elevated a bit above the running creek, relatively flat, and surrounded by nice pools and amazing views of the Box.

The night was a sliver moon, so tons of star-gazing opportunities. A couple of nearby owls were also hooting it up.

In the morning, we packed up camp and retraced our steps. At the saddle, we decided to add on a trip out to the Battleship summit. It was my wife's first time. I've been several times, but each time, it's a fun puzzle to solve. On this trip, it took us a few tries to find the right route that circumnavigates around to the final summit approach, but we eventually made it--and enjoyed complete solitude.

As always, the return trip along the spine was a breeze by comparison.

The rest of the hike out was uneventful. Didn't see anyone until we got close to the TH. It was a little warm on the climb up from La Barge creek, but not bad.

An excellent overnighter. Right now is prime season for backpacking in the Supes with plentiful water everywhere!

Decided to take advantage of the last day of the unseasonably pleasant temperatures. 52 to start, slowly climbed into the 60s and eventually topped out at 76 when the sun was out. Still a cool breeze though and plenty of clouds to keep the sun from ruining things too much.

Hadn't walked 2nd Water since it burned. Met all the expectations I'd been given from other visits I'd seen reports of. Meh.

Boulder Canyon is unburned so that's nice. This trail has gotten a lot more use over the years and is pretty much a highway now. Despite the recent stormy weather, still not a drop of water remaining on the surface.

Took the old boots route up to the saddle, though there's a newer one that gets plenty of use a bit to the north which I used on the descent. Straightforward trip across to the summit. High clouds made for some flat light and lackluster views. Took a solid break to enjoy some 8am m&ms and gummybears for breakfast. :D

Passed the only other humans on the day along the 103. Turning onto 236 I decided to head up canyon, which I had not previously done. The burn here is fairly complete, so there's no mystery to any of it. Plentiful water, though it looked stagnant and unappealing. I imagine these pools now heat up to gross temperatures with the lack of shade surrounding them.

Made some attempt to find the Stoker Trail. Don't bother, there's no sign of it anymore. But it's an easy ashy traverse back to 236 even without obvious tread.

Quick work back to the trailhead. Sun came out for a bit and it felt warmer than the thermometer indicated. Go figure. Hit a solid rain shower on the drive home which is always a nice May treat here.

Today was a return to an old Superstition favorite--I've been up Battleship a few times, but it had been more than five years since my last visit. And it would (hopefully) be a redemption hike for TboneKathy--last time she tried Battleship in March 2017, we ran out of time and didn't make the top, and she took a tumble in the creek bed on the hike out that resulted in a fractured wrist. She hadn't been back since. So the goals today were simple: (1) get TboneKathy to the peak, and (2) don't break anything.

We started ~7AM from First Water TH, which was surprisingly empty for a weekend. This was my first time back there since the fires, and it wasn't great--the area around the trailhead and the first few miles along Second Water were all burned to varying degrees, and the smell of ash and charcoal was a constant until we got closer to Boulder Canyon. There were a few pools along Second Water Trail on the descent, but Boulder Canyon was almost completely dry despite the recent rain.

The use trail leading up to the south end of Battleship was more defined than I remembered and was easy to follow, then we started the fun with the first scramble up onto Battleship and continued north into the obstacles. In March 2017 we turned around just before the bridge/wall not too far from the peak, but TboneKathy was convinced today that most of the top of the ship was uncharted territory for her: "Are you sure I climbed up this before?!" Yes, you did :).

We scrambled through the various boulders and cracks and eventually crossed the bridge and reached the wall, the last big obstacle. With some pack shuttling and creative teamwork, TboneKathy made it up first, and with some further encouragement and some minor complaining through the last few obstacles, we reached summit, goal #1 complete. We had the peak to ourselves, a pleasant surprise given Battleship's popularity. There was no register on top--the pink ammo box that had been up there for years is gone. We ate lunch and enjoyed the views, then took some pictures and started down.

[ youtube video ]

As we reversed through the obstacles on the return, TboneKathy thought she saw a fox or wolf down below on the west side of Battleship, but I never caught more than a glimpse of a tail that looked a lot like a squirrel, so her sighting remains in dispute :). We heard voices and saw two guys down in La Barge Canyon, but other than one person coming down on our way up in the morning, we didn't see anyone on Battleship. The views of La Barge, Peak 2830, Weaver's Needle, Malapais, and the Ridgeline were fantastic as always and better than I remembered.

[ youtube video ]

The hike out was blissfully uneventful with no fractured bones, successfully completing goal #2. Weather-wise, the day was just about perfect, and I was happy to see TboneKathy reach the peak after waiting 8 years. Lots of great memories hiking Battleship with friends over the years, and it was fun to be back after a long time away for another memorable day.

Another great hike with the good Doctor Frick. It has been just over 10 years since the last time we did this one together. Lots of burned area as you hike along the Second Water trail and pretty much down to
Bolder Canyon Trail. After that it wasn't too bad and as always Battleship and the views are outstanding. We met a gal from New Hampshire that hiking her way up but was about to turn back due to time and water concerns. She decided to come along with us for a bit and then we crossed paths with another girl who was going up by herself as well.

Not sure what happened to me on the way out but the hill going up out of Boulder Canyon took a toll on me. I think I am getting old and tired. Either that or I need to get out more often.

Great hike with great people and amazing weather. :y:

This has been on my list for years. Picked up a friend at 8. Met one other at 8:45. Start hike at 9:30. Not much EG for a while on this one. Needless to say, that does change. 😎

Once you leave the official trail, the hike becomes far more aggressive. There is a use trail. This eventually turns to scrambling. There is exposure involved. I can see how this could be too much for some.

We passed up the high point for better views just beyond. The descent wasn't as difficult as I thought it may be. Just when you think you the adventure is winding down, you climb back out.

Would have expected the tracker to show more AEG than this. The 7 hour estimate was right on for us. Back home bout 6. Hoping to pursue further Supes hikes soon that have stagnated on my list for too long...

Catching up on some old logs...

This was an absolutely amazing day out but I certainly couldn't have done this a couple of years ago. I had done Flatiron several times, Picket Post, Pass Mountain, Saddle Mountain, etc. to get used to climbs and mild exposure. I have a fear of heights but managed it following gpx, cairns, and taking notes from Kevin B's video on YouTube.

Be prepared, take lots of water, and don't go alone if you're not experienced. First 5 miles were fast paced, and then a slow scramble to the end. Moving time under 6 hours, elapsed time 9hr 30. Fire damage is extensive but things were already growing back when I did this November 2024.

I wasn't able to carry my pack up one of the first scrambles, but I left it in the trees in that area and was able to complete the final sections without it.

Wanted to see how it felt to do the Battleship in August. It was hot.

Started around 4AM from Boulder Canyon Rec Area. The "exit" lane at Canyon Lake Marina was open, but there was a big sign stating that "Day Use Full", so I guessed that they were using those spots for something else this weekend and didn't try it. Anyways, first few miles were dark and hot, ran into a group of two without lights near the overlook, wished them good morning and got no reply. Maybe some grumpy night photographers? Made quick work of the drop & Boulder Canyon, sunlight didn't touch me until I was on the stern of the 'ship.

It was fun scrambling around on the Battleship, and I was making okay time on the way to the peak, though I did turn around short. The heat & humidity was giving my sweat glands the workout of their lives, and the constant climbs, shimmies, and scouting, with sweat dripping in my eyes, was less than fun. Plus, there was a whole kettle of vultures who had already claimed the summit and I didn't want to turn them into a wake. Made easy work of the return and headed down to La Barge Box to change up the return.

The descent into La Barge box was not well defined until it was very well-defined... guessing I just missed the "start" somewhere. Made it to an upper pool and sat, munching on some breakfast-y jerky, when a lean bear came from upstream. After a few photos I started shouting at it, though it was not deterred until we were less than 15' apart, then it finally skedaddled. It wasn't acting aggressive at all, it was just less fearful of humans than I'm used. First Superstition bear I've seen and it was all the way down in La Barge!

Adrenaline freshly pumped, I headed down the creek, rock-hopping and singing songs in case the bear was waiting for me. Time passed quickly and soon I was hauling out in the hot sun, which quickly took a toll. Even with the slight breeze it was a tough last few miles, and I was cramping and feeling nauseous by the end. Brought 5L, most mixed with electrolytes, and used every drop.

Started from second water trailhead at 7:20am (Sunday)… parking lot about half full. Hiked down to boulder creek and then made a right (East) to end of battleship. Plenty of water flowing in n Boulder creek! Great day hike… not many hikers out today. I always forget how rocky parts of this hike are… boots definitely recommended.

Being a Friday we expected some people on the trail but very few cars were in the First Water Trailhead lot. This was just Anita and my second time doing the route. Having rained the prior night the trail starting out had very few footprints, actually just one. We cruised through the first 2.5 miles then the trail turns a bit rocky taking a bit of the pace out of the cadence. After about 1.5 miles passing the only moisture, you come to the first of 9 river bed crossings, I love my rock hops. Once through the river bed the fun begins, a quick climb and then the adventure across the length of Battleship. After the first vertical climb we met the only other hiker out there, he was going back and hadn't found his way to the end. We continued on and only missed one climb heading out on to a ledge before figuring out our error and finding the climb. My best advice is to always look up and over until the end where you need to go down and around to the left. We had the entire mountain to ourselves enjoying the beautiful payoff that is at the end of Battleship. We both noted that the climbs were actually harder than the descents on the scramble. The other interesting thing about the day was that is was a rare humid day coming in at about 50%. Anita and I both drank about 3.5 liters. While the slog at the beginning is real, so is the payoff at the end, we will be back.

Beautiful and cool day. Comfortable scrambling. Saw a dead Diamondback across the trail. We knew we could cross when it was undisturbed by our projectile.

It had been over 2 years since I had been to Battleship, so I decided to hike it again while the weather was still cool.

We started early from the First Water TH, and did not see anyone until we got to the Boulder Canyon Trail, where a few people were camping.

There was water flowing in all of the creek crossings along Boulder Canyon, but we were able to keep our feet dry by taking advantage of some strategically placed rocks.

It was the usual fun climb up to Battleship, though I did not appreciate the wind up there. After coming back down Battleship, we went over to La Barge Box and had a nice lunch break. There was lots of water in the Box -- more than I have ever seen there.

We then made the long hike back to the TH.

It was a nice day to be out there, although the wind was a bit cold in the morning. I was surprised at how few people were out on this nice day.

Enjoyable day out of First Water. Ran the trail until Boulder Canyon and took it easy for the rest of the day. Parking lots were packed even early in the morning. Made more sense as we saw a LOT of campers around Boulder Canyon. No one was in the box. Only saw three groups on Battleship. Excellent views of Geronimo Head, Malapais, 2830 & more.

Found a few more interesting looking spots to explore on future trips.

Well, sadly we didn't make it all the way up. I've been up before, but I was sad not to get all the way there this time! But, I didn't want to go alone to the top, so there you go! Next time! :)

Otherwise... A beautiful day to be out hiking. Perfect weather. And... Water everywhere!! I loved it! I need to go back out and backpack to take advantage of all that water!

Great views and company. :)

We began our hike at Canyon Lake marina which makes it a bit shorter. I chose this route because I prefer going toward the Battleship through Boulder and LaBarge Creek. Jana, John, Ron and I made the trip and enjoyed the challenge of Battleship Mountain.

Took my out of town guest, Minte, deep into the Superstition Wilderness to my favorite Superstition destination, the LaBarge Box. With beautiful all day weather in the forecast, there was no need to get an early start. We arrived to a crowded trailhead at 10:30am, grabbed our packs and started up the initial climb on the Boulder Canyon Trail. Seemed to be a lot fewer people on the trail than we experienced cars at the trailhead. We arrived at the Box two hours later. After mentioning Battleship Mountain to Minte, it became clear that we would definitely be adding that destination to our trip (add 2.5 hours). After a few minutes enjoying the Box, we began our late push up towards Battleship. This was only my second attempt at Battleship and my first time on lead. Last trip was January 24, 2015, long enough ago to make this feel like a first visit. Vague memories reminded me that it was occasionally necessary to drop from the ridge line and skirt along the west edge and that is exactly what was required on a few occasions. There are a few required Class 4 scrambles along the way to test climbing skills. That only makes the trip that much more interesting. It took us an hour and 30 minutes to reach the northern most point of Battleship Mountain where amazing views looking straight down into the creek bed were the pay off. Fantastic cloud formations developed throughout the day and created some much enjoyed sunshade. Weather was absolutely phenomenal. The trip back to the saddle and back down to LaBarge Creek took another hour, then it was back to the creek boulder hopping as we made our way back towards Canyon Lake. That long steady climb out of the canyon felt killer on my legs and lungs. Glad we decided to filter some water out of a pool at the Box, since we really hadn't prepared for the extra 2.5 hours doing Battleship. As we approached the final high point (1 mile or so from the trailhead) the sun has already set and was creating a beautiful orange creamcicle sky. Minte raced ahead to make sure she did not miss it. We snapped some pics and finished the hike about 5:45pm.

Right about peak fall color, although not a lot of trees in this area to prove it.
