The weather is warming up and headed back to Carney Springs from Lost Goldmine trail. Today I visited the Carney Springs waterfall from LGM east. You can of course get there from Carney Springs TH. A very little bit of recent rain has helped the desert green-up some. 2020 in the Superstitions was a lot like 2020 in rest of the world, barren! Hopefully the drought will break and things will get back to normal before going into the summer. In order for the Carney Waterfall to flow, there really needs to be a lot of rain.

This visit was just to check the social trail and confirm the route so that others can visit the base of the falls too. We have been going to the wall for years, but I don’t know many other people that know about the faint trail. Carney has a beautiful hidden baby canyon with a pocket of high cliffs all around. There are unique views and often a mild breeze inside. It's a rare sight to catch it flowing. Climbers will love this access to the wall. The photoset tells the story of my morning hike. I uploaded the route. I’m writing a guide but it will take me a while.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. I was looking to solve the problem of doing an out-and-back on the Ridgeline while keeping things interesting. Not one of my brighter ideas. Started at Lost Dutchman State Park (needed to use overflow lot because day use lot doesn't open until 8:00 a.m.). Was able to enjoy sunrise at the Flatiron. Followed the Ridgeline through a lot of burn area, and took Hieroglyphic down. The trail is in good shape and I didn't see a soul until I hit the petroglyphs, at which point the hike became densely packed. The turn off onto Lost Goldmine provided major relief from the crowds, which was appreciated. I got a bit turned around heading up Lost Goldmine, but a nice pair of hikers who had likewise gone off-trail shouted me back onto the proper path. Thank you! Heading back on the Ridgeline was fairly crowded (for the crest). Maybe 12 hikers all told doing the Flatiron to Goldmine shuttle. The nice thing about a loop is that once you realize you've bitten off more than you can chew, it's too late! Just so here. By the time I passed the Hieroglyphics turnoff on the way back I was ready to be done and was in a race to do the hard parts of the Flatiron in daylight. Failed on that point and did a fair bit of the downhill near Siphon Draw with my headlamp. I do not like going down Flatiron in the dark. No sir. I rewarded myself with a pizza. It's going to be a while before I try that again.

mike and fletch invited me along for another backcountry multi-pitch in the superstitions
carney was full when we got there around 8:00
the approach for this climb goes right past the wave cave, so i stopped in long enough to take two photos
only three people there, so maybe the crowds were on the ridgeline?
off trail to the base of carney springs wall
six pitches, mike led all of them
he belayed fletch and i together on three of them to save time
the crux was a chute on the third pitch - this one also had a fun chockstone to climb around
new bolts at the belays - a little crowded with three at the fourth and fifth belay
kinda hard to hear on the fifth pitch as there was a helicopter rescue at the wave cave :o
we had planned to rappel off, but between the sketchy slung boulder at the top, the crowded belays and party of three, decided on the walk off
in climbing shoes :?
quite a bushwhack to the north, then down a gully and sidehill to the base of the wall
it was nice to get down to the wave cave trail after all that
i enjoyed the climbing, and the backcountry aspect definitely adds to the adventure
long day and a lot of off trail for me
we earned our dinner at oregano's
always good to get out with mike and fletch
estimating mileage and elevation gain
more information about the climb on mountain project

It was steep at times.

Had the all stars with me today for this trek into the Superstitions. Jan, Carey, Maria, and Yolanda. My second time up Carney Springs to Robbers Roost then over to Cave trail for my first (and successful) attempt. We made good time up Carney and was passed by a large group from the Arizona Mountaineering Club doing Ridgeline. Meet one lone hiking at Robbers Roost who came up Peralta. Cautiously made our way down Cave trail thanks to first hand knowledge of my teammates and route info from HAZ. Definitely made good use of the GPS tracks for this one! Fantastic day in the Sups!

1st trip
The three of us decided to do the Robber’s Roost-Cave Trail loop with our new hiker buddy, Nebraska Jack, whom we met on the Cave Trail a couple of weeks ago. I hadn’t hiked Carney Springs in several years and had the misinformed elation of thinking I’d summited after reaching the saddle in 50 minutes. That turned out to be 800 vertical and 22 minutes further up the road, totaling up to about two Black Mtns, which we climb off and on when we have nothing better to do, although rarely twice at once.

A fairly good spray of wildflowers began appearing around 2500’ and stayed with us all day. Several specimens of Wooly Paintbrush and everyone’s favorite, Live-forever, a/k/a Dudleya saxosa, which doesn’t have quite the ring of Live-forever, showed up along with the usual suspects. Didn’t hear or see any running water.

This was the first trip through Robber’s Roost for the three of us. Brian, our horse, who wound up drinking his 100 ozs of water by the bottom of Devil’s Slide, exited through the chimney while the rest of us retraced our steps.

The bushwhack over to Fremont Saddle should be avoided at all costs; however, it must be done anyway. The cacti and various spears along the way drew their allotment of blood from me. Then we took our Gunsight picture and lunched under the lonesome pine, which was quite the place to be today, about 70 degrees with a nice breeze. Some lassies from Minnesota appeared and grilled us about our favorite trails. Brian, the horse, of course, picked the Ridgeline while I stubbornly held out for Barnhardt in the spring when the water’s running. Nebraska spoke up for #3 of the Four Peaks, the only hill within sight that he hasn’t gotten around to do yet. There’s a moral question whether those other two trails should be mentioned at all to some snowbirds from Minnesota, whereas the hardest part of the Barnhardt is the road to the trailhead.

Then Nebraska guided us down the Cave Trail, which is quite a bit shorter and easier when you stick to the trail, rather than wandering off into Barks Canyon as we did two weeks ago. The Devil’s Slide is still a bit of a gulper when seen for the first time.

All and all, a great day and a great hike. Dacite Mesa is quite a wonder.
