1st trip
Week 1 staying at my sister's place in Lakeside, decided to hit as many of the trails in the areas as possible to train for some big upcoming events.

Tuesday morning - Woodland trails

4.5 miles, 41 minutes - Took the hound dog up Turkey Track, down the back half of Hitching Post, and then around Woodland Lake. Somewhat aggressive pace. The house is a quarter mile from trail system access, which is nice.

Tuesday afternoon - Country Club Loop w/ Pat Mullen Mountain

4.4 miles, 51 minutes - Nice gentle grade until the spur, then a little hiking up to the summit. The amount of twists and turns on the 2nd half of the loop was annoying. The top of the hill is nice enough.

Wednesday morning - Woodland trails

6 miles, 1 hour - Brought dog again, did the Hitching Post loop followed by Turkey Track/Walnut.

Thursday morning - Timber Mesa

7.5 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes - Thought it was going to be a lot flatter at the top. Still kinda flat, but some rollers. Map mileage was right on. It's a pleasant enough loop, with some decent views here and there.

Thursday afternoon - Springs loop

3.4 miles, 37 minutes - with dog. Both of us enjoyed this one (which is to say, I enjoyed it, as she enjoys any and all trails). Creek is still flowing.

Friday morning - Woodland trails

4.4 miles, 49 minutes - with dog. Turkey Track, Walnut, Big Springs loop, then down Hitching Post.

Definitely a nice change of pace from the PMP...

After work hike. 35 degrees at the start. Summited at dusk, then added a partial descent and re-ascent for more elevation. Saw the California satellite launch on the horizon at dusk, pretty cool to see framed in pine silhouettes. A chunk of basalt took me down on the hike back. Flagstaff to Whiteriver to Pinetop to Tucson plus working all in one day, tiring but fun.

I did a quick recon trip in the Country Club trail to see if my ridge bike would do OK on the planned ride for the weekend.

After work sunset hike. Lots of wildflowers and merciless mosquitoes. Some random Razor passenger was pooping behind the trailhead info board when I pulled up. :sk:

I went to Big 5 and scored a $29 pair of trail runners and headed for a nice slow jog. It was a baby jog. I didn't see Pat Mullen peak listed on HAZ, so I figured I'd claim it as a first ascent. :y: . : wink : The normal TH was pretty full so I drove down the road and went to where the corral is. The trail was wet and I almost wiped out luckily there was an elk laying next to the trail to break my fall. Not sure if it actually was an elk or just a log shaped like one :-k . Brunop and replacement dog stayed home and sulked the whole time. They forgave me when we shared a Dale's. Not hiking for like 6 years has made me take more time to appreciate my surroundings. Wait, who am I kidding being out of shape and gasping for air has made me do it. RS said 793 AEG but I just subtracted high and low from topo and came up with 392. Miles said 2.84 which also seemed high so I rounded down to 2.5. If you read this far, you have way too much time on your hands.

Judy and I are spending a long weekend at our neighbors cabin in Pinetop hiking and fishing. Scouted Silver Creek, Scott Reservoir, Rainbow Lake and Show Low Lake. The TH for Country Club Trail was only 8 minutes away so we tried it first. Easy hike in pine forest. Took the side trail in the way out to Pat Mullen summit. Surprised to find a tree decorated with Ghomes! Small sign said For World Peace 2001. Views better on way up than at the top because to tall pines in the area block the view. On to the end of the trail where you can continue on the Chipmunk Connector. Returned the same way minus the .5 mile summit spur. Nice to be in the trees with temps in the high 40’s.

I had never heard of this trail, but was working in the area and it had a little summit to hike to, so why not? The trail was an old road among the pines and volcanic rocks, and I saw no one. Made the summit of Pat Mullen Mountain at dusk, where an unseen bobcat was screaming maybe 100 feet away. Interesting. Hiked back the way I had come in the dark, and had dinner on the patio at El Patron. Fun way to wrap up a long day at the Pinetop office.

Getting behind on my journal writing.....Day 3 of our Pinetop vacation :y: Started the morning by heading to the Country Club TH. I had scouted the TH the day before so I made good time in getting there. (Under 10 minutes. :) ). Got on the trail a little before 5am. Still a little dark out so I started off walking, going in a CCW direction. Even in the predawn light the trail was easy to navigate. About .6 miles in the trail junctures with the Iron Horse Trail. The juncture is well signed so there was no issues on which way to go. Starting jogging from this. Trail remained a nice single track for the most part (until the last half mile) with minimal elevation gain until the approach to the Pat Mullen vista. This occurred around the 2.25 mile mark (going CCW). The climb up to the Mullen juncture and the climb up to the vista were switchbacked and fairly mild. The view from the top was nice, though not expansive. Still worth doing. Couple of other notes. About 1.5 miles in the is a juncture with the Chipmunk Springs Trail. This trail will take you to the Los Burros Loop Trail. Just past this juncture the trail skirted a meadow where I counted 34 elk and I'm sure I missed a few. Once again, my presence seem to stir them up enough where a few of them started "bugling". Really neat! Also, saw a coyote, which seemed like it was running away from something (not sure what). Can't recall seeing a coyote moving with that much urgency when it wasn't chasing something. Very nice little loop. Encountered 1 hiker and 1 trail runner. Weather perfect. Upper 50's

Last year I did the Tour of the White Mountains Mountain Bike race. I did the 9 mile fun run. This includes the Country Club trail. I had hiked this trail and road this trail before so I'm surprised I never logged it, but I haven't. this year I had every intention of doing the longer 35 mile course that includes country club trail along with Los Burros. Well as this year hasn't really gone as I had plan in a few ways, but I feel like now things are getting back to where I wanted, but I am a little behind so since I am not ready for the longer race I am planning on the 9 miler again, but this time including my girlfriend. It will be her first race.
We went up for a pre-ride, I wanted to take her on the full course.
The course comes out to 9.1 miles, it starts at the Equestrian center then heads out on what is called railroad graded trail to the Iron horse connector then to Country Club, then Back Iron Horse, back railroad. Its a nice little lollipop loop.

Oh part of the country club trail has been rerouted, not by much, there are spots where you can still see the old trail maybe 10 feet away.

I had ridden this trail a few years ago, but the signage is all messed up now. There is a loop, but I couldn't remember which way to go at the many junctions. I ended up following the connector that goes toward Los Burros Trail, according to the sign. Later on I emailed the TRACKS president to ask him about it and he said yes, it is a loop trail, and he will tell the trail coordinator about the sign problems. Then I looked in my guidebook and see where I should have turned left. Oh, well.

The maps in the kiosk are bad because the names on the maps don't match the names on the signs. The map in the guidebook is the same map, without the confusing wrong names. However, the guidebook is no longer available.

As for the ride, at first it is pretty rocky. As I recall, if you do follow the loop around, it is pretty easy riding. I had a good time, rocks and all.

Such a fine day for being outside, and it was fun to be on a trail that really needed snowshoes. Started off w/out them, and ended up postholing up to my thighs... Not easy with my heavy backpack (see photos) :)

I added mileage for all the other walking about, getting lost and unlost, sledding and adventuring we did over the weekend. Great place to hang out, for sure!
