Was in Sedona to visit my family, they were driving up from Phoenix in an RV. Since I still had about 90 minutes till they arrived, I decided to go hiking. Doe Mtn was a close one and there were a few geocaches nearby so I went with it. The hike up was uneventful, I passed a few people going down and eventually made it to the top. Walked the rim trail and took a few photos. No one else was up here. Headed back down and made a short detour to find a geocache then headed back to my vehicle.

Hiked up to Doe Mountain to watch the sunset. I think the view is better for sunrise, but it was still nice. We were one of two cars at the parking lot when we started, but a few other cars joined later. We had a perfect, private viewing area.

Part two of my Monday day-off. Having completed a trip to Boynton Cyn, I was still feeling the draw of the red rocks, so I picked an easy looking trail with a couple of geocaches to get my geocache fix for April. Got to the top pretty quickly and proceeded to try to walk the top counterclockwise. I lost the trail pretty quickly... picked up another... then another, and ended up blocked by manzanitas. I decided to just hit the geocaches, which I did and that made up for my earlier random wandering around on top of the mountain.

My fellow glacier chatter and friend and my former classmate and friend got to spend a few days in Sedona. We had to rough it at the Hyatt as Tina had to "use it or lose it" points for a timeshare. Her husband couldn't get away from work so she was stuck with us (Deborah is down from Montana until the end of the month). I picked out several hikes for our few days; a small one in the morning and the bigger hike in the afternoon. After all, it was a bit nippy; especially in the mornings.

This is my third hike of this mountain (May 2012, Nov 2020). After a leisurely breakfast, we headed out passing by the busier areas of Dry Creek Road where many hikers vehicles were piling up... on a Wednesday morning. We were lucky to find a parking spot right in the Bear/Doe Trailhead lot. Our parking luck would continue for most of our stay, including the Airport Loop.

The bottom of the trail is in good shape and it seems to me they've added more stairs. They did a very nice job. However, there are three tricky areas still to traverse. I see they are having problems directing hiker traffic through one of them. I do like the long switchbacks, even though it's not really that steep. However, it gives you a chance to check out the terrain including an icy ledge with a prickly pear cactus almost laying in it... made for an interesting picture.

We encountered a few people on the way up as we would on the way down. Hikers on this trail come in all sizes and ages. Once we got on top we only saw two other hikers who were sitting at the far south edge; otherwise, it was just us. I like hiking as close to the edge as possible but Tina's not that fond of ledges. Interestingly enough, every hike we took her on involved some ledges. However, she did get used to them by the end. And early on this trip, she had her first encounter with a prickly pear that reached up and introduced itself.

We strayed away from the edge and continued south, still admiring the views to the east including Mescal Mountain where I would take them on Friday afternoon. Soon we could see Chimney Rock to the west of Thunder Mountain/Capitol Butte and in the further distance, Airport Mesa Loop. The breeze would pick up from time to time but not enough to warrant putting my jacket back on. I pointed out some of the flora. Once you get over to the west side you could see the snow on the mountains. Below to the southwest, the construction has really picked up with several more very large houses on big lots. Looking to the bottom of the mesa though, you get to see the lines in the rock that the sea left behind and that's always cool :) .

We turned north where we had clear views to the very intriguing mountains of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness and that big ole Bear Mountain. Once you start east, the trail near the edge is very sketchy so we ended up wandering back and forth quite a bit. The whole trek is rather rocky so you have to pay attention to your footing, especially if you're trying to take in the never-ending view. We headed back down into the shade of the mountain encountering a few people; some I wondered if they would make it up. We did a little rumpaging too; it was just easier that way.

I did take movies as I haven't done any since early October. I am using a new editing program, Filmora, so I've had a bit of a learning curve but so far, I think I like it better than Premiere Elements. One of the main reasons I'm switching is because the AI took a big leap on that software. It also seems a little more user friendly, other than I can't get it to load straight to youtube, some kind of internet connection issue.

Anyway, it was a great way to start our day but the hike ended up being a bit longer than I anticipated. However, we weren't in any kind of a hurry... obviously  . Interestingly enough, I mentioned in my 2020 triplog that I thot the 965 AEG was too high but as you can see, this time RS says 936 and I did sync it.

Here is the link to the video I created using Filmora. The transitions are fun and they have lots of other cool things I am just learning about. However, I discovered that the same video looks very different on the various media so IF you happen to watch and you see flickering, I would love to know (and what media you were using to watch). I noticed the flickering on my larger Fire TV, but not on any of my other media. UPDATE 2-19-2023, I researched and changed some settings so this is the updated video and the flickering should be gone: [ youtube video ]

Day #1 of my annual trip to the GC with friends. Scooped up my hiking partner from Sky Harbor bright and early and we had a whole day to kill before meeting someone for dinner up in Flagstaff. Jim H recommended this as a fairly mellow stroll. We climbed up to the top and circumnavigated the entire summit and went back down. Nice way to stretch the legs and avoid some Sedona crowds.

Nice hike, and the views at the top are outstanding. We did most of the loop at the top, cutting off just a bit of the West end.

Red rocks + snow are a combo I’m willing to wake up early for! We started out at Doe Mountain a little past sunrise and were surprised by the fact that no one else was there! Sweet! :D The whole hike was short, sweet and stunning. It was really wet and muddy scrambling up the slick rocks but the views made it worth it! We even had a snowstorm when we were on top. Just so pretty and peaceful. Highly recommend for early morning on a snow day! Snow had melted by mid morning, which we observed from destination 2.

Decided to get out of town to hike to beat the heat and Sedona was my pick.  I ended up doing a Plan C that was Plan A but only 1/2 of Plan A.  You know how sometimes things happen for a reason; well today that is what happened.  I had decided on Plan B of doing Soldier Pass with the Arches and Brins Mesa Loop; but, the lot was full and it was too much of a hassle to drive back out to 89A and over to the Jordan TH. So I went back to Plan A which was now Plan C :wrt: and drove out to Doe Mountain and would combine that with Mescal Trail.

I got the last spot at the TH and put on my boots and said "hello" to my backpack which I hadn't spoken to since August.  I really didn't need that for this particular hike but I had planned on the longer hike at Brins so this would have to do.  I had forgotten how UP this trail is initially and that it veers to the west before heading east; however, it is in the shade which is nice.  The trail seems much more worn than I recall from my hike in May 2012.  There was an elderly couple who needed some assistance and a hiker in front of me helped them out.  I didn't think this elderly couple would make it to the top as it's not the easiest of climbs but just as I got back from my loop about an hour later, there they were.  I gave them "kudos" and wished them luck on the way down.  I also told them to go over to the other side of the mesa where they could sit down and enjoy the views for their labors.

There were quite a few people sitting along this east side for the first 1/2 mile or so and then I was on my own for the rest of the hike.  Like last time, I tried to stay closer to the side of the mesa because that's obviously where the views are and those, my friends, are some great views almost all the way around with the key being ALMOST.  The south side had some cairn castles and little cairn forts on the exposed rock sections.  But this is Sedona so the cairns are probably for vortexes of some sort.  I did try working with my phone camera's zoom again and I'm still displeased so I may try to contact Samsung to see if there is an issue.  I also did a few videos with the phone as I continue to test whether I like it or my camera better for movies.

On the southwest side, sadly on the valley floor there are some huge houses going in and they were constructing away while I was making my way along this side of the mesa.  They've even put in a giant pond.  So it interferes with the picture taking which is disappointing.  There were two couples that I could hear in the distance off and on for the rest of the hike as I skirted around this west side.  It's amazing how rough the trail is on this whole hike with all the rocks and such.  I guess it's not really a trail per se but a path.  I still took strolls over to the edges and tried some different kinds of shots since this was going to be more of a photographic hike.

I got back to the start where I encountered that elderly couple that had just made it up.  It took them an hour :o to tackle that 1/2 mile; now that's perseverance : rambo : .  I do hope they made it down okay.  The husband said the wife read that it was rated an easy hike.  That is not how I would rate this hike as even when you're on top, it's not the easiest going either.  I think he did much better than she did but still; what an effort on their part.  I was glad to get down as it's not the easiest trail as it's slippery and so worn now.  There are step-offs that you really have to find a hand-hold to get down the bigger step downs; mostly because you don't want to slide when you land.  There was a lot of people traffic as I was coming down too.

I need to remember to hike this counter-clockwise next time.  I had my sandwich under a tree while I tried to find the directions to the Mescal Trail on HAZ.  The internet was dicey out here so I couldn't find what the TH name was and when I asked google, it said I didn't have any internet.  I guessed that it was the Long Canyon Road but that was a wrong guess. I could have started from there but it was so crowded as were all of the trailhead access points on this road.  I had to remind myself it was Tuesday as it seemed like a weekend out here.

So I decided I would stop by the Romain Room at Sedona Consignment and check out what the new owners had done with it and then do Airport Mesa Loop.  Once I went back and looked at what was the Romain Room I knew this was not good as everything was red-tagged at 1/2 price.  Our previous contract was supposed to be honored but that was not the case nor did this person have the passion about the art as the previous owner.  I made the decision to take everything out which meant making room in Tonto Jr for all of these framed art pieces.

Nothing like driving all that way and back for a 2.88 mile hike but it just seems like 2020 continues to bite! I think the AEG the phone's route came up of 965 was incorrect so I changed it to 503 ft. Here is the video I put together [ youtube video ] I do like the movies the Note produces, the stabilizer is great and picture quality seems nice as well. It just seems harder to hold the phone and hike and film; it's a phone balancing issue that I haven't figured out.

Here is the video from 2012 (all movies), it's interesting to look back on it vs now: [ youtube video ]

WATCH:  2.88 miles in 1:55 at avg speed 1.4MPH (4520 to 4995 feet), avg 124 bpm with max 176 bpm, burned 698 calories, 63.8 degrees and 20% humidity at 11:59AM

I was up in Camp Verde to break my wife's dad out of rehab (key-the theme music to Mission Impossible). Actually, he was due for release and we were up help get him situated back home. That being said I still had time for a quick hike...and in this case, the drive was as long as the hike. Took about 40 minutes to drive from Camp Verde to get to the Doe TH and the hike took about an hour. When I got to the TH (a little after 6am) there was already 1 car there. I was surprised to note that this is a payment required TH ($7' per visit (I think) or $20 for a seasonal pass). The mileage to the top was only .7 miles from the Doe TH. The switchbacks weren't quite as gradual as I envisioned. There was a climb, then a nice flat section and then another climb with some "Kiwanis-like steps" thrown in. When I reached the top there were trail markers that guided me to the east side of the mesa. Followed the edge around to Cockscomb. The drop as I went around the edge of the mesa was impressive, Cockscomb was not. I was just treated to a view of the hillside of the mountain. Due to time constraints I did not follow the perimeter all the way around the mesa, but cut across to get back to the main trail. Not that difficult, though brush and manzanita were fairly thick up top. Nice short hike. I would have liked to have spent more time on the mesa. Might be worth doing as a family hike. Never saw anyone on the trail...a nice change from the day before.

With all the hike planning I've done in the Sedona area, Doe Mountain had never hit my radar. I figured this would be a great complement to Fay Canyon Overlook that we started the day with. Fun climb up to the top and great trail around the perimeter of the butte. Great way to end the day.

I wanted to do another hike in Sedona. I asked Andy if he was interested and he said yes. He suggested Bear Mountain. I had never done that, so I was game for that one. It's a pretty short hike for a long drive, so I suggested we add Doe Mountain as well, and maybe even a 4 mile loop of the Cockscomb Trail around Doe Mountain. Andy recently got a new hiking vehicle and even graciously offered to drive, which I gladly accepted.

While Bear Mountain is a short hike, it has a lot of elevation gain and is pretty steep. There are also a lot of high steps that have to be taken to get up the trail. Good workout and as usual, amazing views all around Sedona. It was chilly in the morning, and windy, but the heat of exertion and the sun was warmth enough. The views at the top of the other side of the mountain were great, as well as a nice view of the San Francisco Peaks with snow and some wispy clouds around the peaks. The lighting was better on the way back down the mountain, so I had better pictures of that. Not many hikers on the way up, but quite a few on the way down.

Once we got back to the trailhead, the lot was full (as usual), and cars were parked along the road. Andy and Mike were spent from the ascent up Bear Mountain, so it was just Wally and I doing Doe Mountain. By the time I got to the top of Doe Mountain, Wally was already on his way down. He took the trail to where the last marker is and turned back. I decided to follow the loop around the top of the mountain, which is fairly faint and not maintained as an official trail. This took about an extra half hour or so, but the views along all the edges were really nice.

I got back to the trailhead a little after 2pm. Wally had just started to hike back up the trail to see if something happened to me since he wasn't aware of the loop at the top. I suggested the 4 mile loop around the mountain, but was quickly shot down in flames.

My AEG that RS measured for this hike was not even 2600'. Joe and Bruce did this same hike previously and their routes show over 3600'. This definitely felt closer to 3600 that under 2600, so I'm going with that as my stat for this hike. I've noticed lately that it seems Route Scout might be underestimating my AEG. Definitely noticed some kind of issue on my hike last week.

The ride back on I-17 was very nice. Not the crazy Sunday return traffic to Phoenix. It looks very different now with all the green along the highway and the surrounding mountains. Thanks to Andy for driving and choosing a nice hike.

I was looking for a Black Friday hike to do and decided to go hike Bear-Doe in Sedona: Bear Mountain and Doe Mountain. I had previously done each of these hikes separately, but had never done them both in the same day. It is easy enough to do both, since the two trails both start from the same parking lot.

We did Bear first, and it is a really nice but strenuous hike -- much more strenuous than the distance and elevation gain would suggest. The first time that I did the hike, once on Bear Mountain I stopped at the sign that said "End of Trail", thinking that I was at the summit. But subsequent research revealed that the sign is at 6,470', and .4 mile to the NW is a higher point at 6,506'. So we did an off-trail bushwhack to the "true" summit. The bushwhack wasn't bad, although there was some scrub oak, manzanita, prickly pear, yucca, agave, and other assorted pleasantries to deal with.

My GPS recorded the 6,506 mark in the vicinity of N34.91906 W111.88409. I never did see a survey marker, summit cairn, or summit logbook though.

After getting back to the parking lot, we made the relatively easy climb up to Doe Mountain. While on top we ventured over to the high point on Doe as well.

If you ever have friends and relatives from out-of-town who aren't really hikers but who want to see Sedona, Doe Mountain is a good place to take them. It is a mesa, and it is almost flat as a pancake on top. You can walk along the edge of the mesa and see many of the landmarks that Sedona is known for -- it is basically like Sedona 101.

Short hike up the Doe mountain trail, not sure where the trail ended but enjoyed circling around the edge of the flat top mountain. Nice way to get some panoramic views of this part of red reck country. Stalked a couple of stellar jays on the way up but they refused to pose.Easily followed trail would be a good hike even for small children. Good addition to Bear mountain since its the same trail head parking lot.

Was just passing through Sedona from camping the previous night on the way up to Flag, but I couldn't go through red rock town without getting a little elevation. I was biking Aerie so I dropped the bike and laced up for a view. Having hiked Bear previously I knew the mesa that awaited me up top. Fairly quiet for a Sunday am, although we passed several groups on our way down. Great canyon views to the NE.

After hiking Bear Mountain we set our sights on Doe Mountain. These two make a perfect combo because they start from the same trailhead. We started hiking a little before noon and made steady progress up the switchbacks that lead to the plateau. It’s easy going and the trail levels off after an easy 500 ft gain. Once up top we followed the trail signs to a view point facing southeast towards Sedona. From there we made a clockwise loop along a use trail that circles the plateau. We stopped for a handful of pics and both commented we were getting hungry for lunch. We decided to finish up and head over to Fay Canyon Arch where we’ll take an extended lunch break. The hike down was a breeze and we were back to the jeep around 1pm. This was a nice and easy hike with wonderful views.
