First time in Fossil Creek so when Chumley suggested it sounded good. His triplog is a very good description of how the trip went. After walking the trail to the damn and checking out the Fossil Creek springs source it was time to venture off trail down canyon.

I'm not going to rehash all the details that Chumley described but after we were cliffed out during the off trail our progress came to a halt. As mentioned it took almost an hour to travel 500 feet in the canyon. However, about 15 minutes of that time was spent at the bottom of the ravine checking to make sure I was still able to walk after the mishap down the slope.

After the ravine experience it was decided we should just bail on the off trail and head back to the real trail. Of course we had to cross the creek which was a swim but the water was not that cold. The brush was thick but managed to forge the jungle and make it through to the other side and eventually the trail.

Followed the trail down to the where we again went off trail to link up with the waterfall. Waterfall was nice and nobody around since it was about 430 by that time. Enjoyed a well earned beverage at the waterfall before finishing off the hike on trail back to the vehicle!

Yeah, so.

I hadn't been to Fossil since the Backbone Fire of 2021, and somehow Karl had never been anywhere near here ever. Making a loop of the flume, Bob Bear, and 708 seemed to be an awful lot of boring road walking, and I wondered if it wouldn't be more fun to head up flume and make an off-trail route along the creek from the dam back down to the waterfall. The off-trail is only about 2.5 miles after all.

Out of the 12,000 fossil area triplogs on HAZ, there was only a single one that reported having done this before. Over a decade ago, toddak reported having canyoneered downstream from the dam. His post seemed to provide evidence of survival.

Except for the technical things, some of the higher mileage things, the cycling, or climbing Eagletail Peak, I'm usually comfortable doing things that toddak has done. But I still messaged a handful of the more adventurous people I know to ask if anybody knows why it seems to be so infrequently traveled. After all, who doesn't like following the watery rim canyons in Arizona? Sycamore, West Fork, Woods, Wet Beaver, West Clear, East Verde, Real Verde, Tonto, Haigler, Canyon, etc. They all have ample detailed reports of passage. But not Fossil.

So we set off on a lovely late-November day. The last time I hiked the flume road there was an actual flume here. Seeing how nicely APS crews had dismantled and removed this historic infrastructure was simultaneously impressive and a little sad. I'm glad I got to see it 20 years ago when it was still in use. It probably would have burned 3 years ago anyway.

We made quick time to the dam and I took Karl on a tour of some highlights in the spring area. A handful of people were hanging out at the dam, the only others we encountered today.

My map recon led me to believe that the best route to head downstream would be on the south side of the creek, so I knew we would want to cross somewhere early in our adventure. This is where the day took a turn.

There are no easy routes to reach the creek. It is surrounded by some of the most dense flora that I've encountered in Arizona. There are the intertwined thickets of thorny shrub that literally cannot be penetrated short of leading with electric hedge trimmers. Then there are the forests of reeds. These can sort of be pushed through by a determined soul with some serious effort, and indicate shallower water as they tend to grow on the travertine dams or shorelines.

Speaking of travertine dams, they're very cool. And high. And what that means is that they create some impressively deep pools behind them. These are all mandatory swimmers. There is no shallow wading here. And these dams are beautiful living gardens, untouched by the feet of visitors like they are far downstream. So they're difficult to see and cross. And there are treacherous mysteries and surprise plunge pools waiting at every turn. But the water is crystal clear with a touch of aqua. Visibility to the sandy bottom a dozen feet down is really special.

I found a thicket of something partially penetrable on the opposite shore where I was somehow able to fight through to dry ground. I had lost Karl along the way. After a few minutes we made shouting contact and I spent the next 10 minutes trying to direct him through the mess to get to me. There was crawling involved.

Finally across the creek it was time to turn downstream. In under 50 yards pushing through the shoreline hell we got cliffed out. There was no way we would turn around and attempt to cross back over.

The only option was up. And it was awful. After what was apparently less than 200 feet of near-vertical scree, dirt, ash, and locust we found ourselves on a high slope above the creek. All of this is just 3 years out of the Backbone burn so the locust and other shrub was reasonably avoidable with a pinball maze of routefinding. We headed back down toward the lower bench immediately above the creek hoping to find some wildlife routes that might be typical in similar terrain elsewhere in the state.

Nope. That wasn't to be. More locust. Occasional bonus catclaw, and not a chance in hell of dropping down the final 20 feet to the creekside wall of not-gonna-get-through-it. So we headed back up again, figuring our route downstream would have to stay up 100+ feet above the creek in the burned former juniper range.

This seemed to be going ok until we reached a drainage that was barely visible on topo but looked a lot like Grapevine Creek or any of the other Grand Canyon side drainages that the Tonto Trail goes around. There was no crossing it. So we started heading up canyon to get around it. And then we stopped.

This is just stupid. What the hell are we doing?

The flume road was nicely visible just across the valley and we decided getting to it was the best option. We knew it would suck to get to it. And it did. From when we decided to bail, it took 55 minutes to move 500 feet.

Along the way, Karl took a 25 foot tumble down a 60 degree slope, stopped by the boulders at the bottom of a ravine. The button almost got pushed. Somehow the things that hurt all still worked the way they were supposed to and we got back to making our way toward the creek -- and the flume road on the other side.

Have I mentioned Arizona Grape yet? At least it's not thorny. But those vines will grab you for miles. There is no pushing through them. We found a pool with a boulder on the opposite shore. Finally a possible landing on the other side of the creek. No attempts at staying dry were made. It was a thankfully pleasant day and we knew the flume road would have plenty of afternoon sun, so in we went. The boulder gave us a chance to regroup for the next 10 yards which would take its toll before pushing out into delightful burned desert scrub. Cockleburs and catclaw and whatever that grass crap is that will never come out of my socks have never been so welcomed. The road was only a 50 foot climb above us.

Karl wasn't complaining too bad, and I was surprised that I was able to convince him to take the LPtrekkinEagleJoe route down to the creek near the waterfall. After all he'd never been here before. He HAD to see the waterfall, right?

It was almost dark. There was nobody else in the canyon anymore. We enjoyed a beer. It was EARNED! Amazingly it hadn't exploded during the fall or other pumpkintery today. It was nice to be on the very-well traveled Dixon trail as daylight waned. It got cold. It probably would have helped if I wasn't soaking wet from getting in the water at the falls. #doinitforthegram ;)

Oh, and the road back to the 260 is currently in the most miserable washboard shape I have recently experienced. 14 miles of bone-jarring vibrations. It would have destroyed a bobblehead mounted to the dash.

So. In review: No. You can't hike downstream from the dam to the waterfall. Don't bother trying.

* It might be fun to attempt a swim/float/paddle in warmer months. But I think you would be in the water 90% of the time.

Started at Flume TH at the end of E Old New River Rd. Service Rd for .83 of a mile then left on Flume. Went out 1.5 miles and turned around.

6:40 AM start. Started right as sun came over the mountains and I had to walk right into it until I turned on to Flume.

Only saw one mountain biker the whole time.

Have not been to Fossil Creek before, did not expect to hike to a destination to see a warning about a toilet bowl. Shortly before reaching the springs area I passed a young couple with their dog “sonny” . Very friendly dog who sports sun glasses well, reminded me of an Irish setter but had a dark coat. Anyway I arrived shortly before they did and walked upstream had a snack but I had noticed a plaque above the waterfall and since I couldn’t read it ,should have worn better glasses, asked the younger couple to help me out. I presumed it was a historic marker for the dam or creek so when he was reading it I thought he was kidding with words like “toilet bowl”, “ dangerous currents”, so I took a picture of the plaque, which basically warns to not get flushed. No one was in the water including me but there have been drownings reported so take the warnings seriously. Saw little of the remnants of the flume, was a bit warm initially as I did not start until afternoon and minimal shade, but it was windy and cooler when I finished. Was able to try out my new sandals for the first crossing of the mid calf deep water leading up to the information kiosk. Gained a few extra miles walking back and forth on the road first to the waterfall trail and then back to the bridge as I was parked at the Irving trail head. The area of the road near the bridge is better walked anyway as the road is in bad shape lot of large rocks to avoid or creep over slowly. The drive from Camp Verde was tedious, the first 10 miles was similar to Peralta road ,could maintain 25mph but the permit area ie. The last 5 to 6 miles is in rough shape ,a less than 10mph road.I didn’t mind too much as I was escaping from my wife’s art show weekend after helping set it up.Not likely to be back before permits needed, 4/1,think I’ll try the Strawberry side next time and consider the loop. Wish now I had seen the power plant and flume working though I think it’s presence deterred me from exploring this area in the past.

Highly recommend doing the whole loop! The Fossil Creek Trail from Strawberry is really cool. I used to drive down Fossil Creek Rd years ago when there were no permits and only maybe a few other people down at the FC waterfall. That is definitely not the case anymore. :o I'm happy they closed the road though because the hike is waaaay better. Fossil Creak Trail goes down to the less populated springs and from there connects with the Flume Trail. The Flume Trail is cool because you can see down to the creek and all the smaller turquoise waterfalls along the way. There's no access to the creek from the Flume Trail and it's a pretty steep drop down pretty much the whole way. Caution about attempting the Flume Trail when it is warmer out because it is not shaded and no water access. The Flume Trail eventually drops down to FC waterfall where the hoards of people hang out. Seriously, it's a madhouse down there and looks MUCH different from 8-10 years ago which seems like somewhat of a short time for so much change. We hiked back up Fossil Creek Rd and see why it is closed now. It was always treacherous but there are whole chunks of road missing now. Also, at the turn near the top you can see a bunch of cars that didn't make the turn and went over the edge. Yikes! Pretty crazy to see. Oh and we also saw a bunch of coatis near the springs from the Fossil Creek Trail! Very cool! :)

Hiked in on the Fossil Springs Trail and were the first people at the dam. Hung out for a few minutes before heading up and back down the Flume Trail to the other side. Flume Trail was very exposed and a little harder than I was expecting. Soaked our feet in Fossil Creek and found a javelina(?) skull before we left to head back. Luckily it was partially overcast, so the heat was more tolerable on the way. We were happy to be able to refill our water at the springs before heading out.

I am really liking the new pass program to access FC. There were no crowds and a lot less trash. The warmth of the day helped cut the coldness of the water. Other than the nibbling fish, very relaxing. Saw a crew severely under prepared about a mile in on the flume trail. I hope they turned around. Will be making a trip out here again this season with the kids.

First trip down to Fossil Springs since the permit requirement, what a difference. It was amazing there not being a thousand people at the TH creek area and at the springs at the end. I’m a big fan of keeping this area preserved for everyone.
I did not revisit the trail specs ahead of time so it was longer and higher gain than I remembered, or I’m just more out of shape :P Didn’t help that it was of course 15 degrees above normal on the day of our reservation.
Permit parking for us was at the bridge so we had an extra 1-2 miles before we got to the TH. But no worries. Still an excellent hike and a great day spent. The water was crystal clear as usual and we found a great private swimming hole where we rested and had a nice swim. The water was chilly but nothing crazy. Had the unique pleasure of having the fish nibble at my legs once in a while which was interesting.
Not too much wildlife, the ubiquitous small lizards, turkey vultures, and a pretty good size hawk. Hardly any flowers, just a few on the little cacti just starting to pop.
Great day out at one of Arizona’s beautiful rare natural wonders.

Up in Pine with one of my sons for the weekend. He'd never been to Fossil Springs before and this one fit the bill perfectly.

We got this in before the permit system starts again on April 1st.

It was cool enough to keep the crowds down, not not cold enough to keep people from swimming. There was even a guy that was just finishing up in a wet suit and an air tank at the waterfall off the Waterfall Trail.

Beautiful clear skies with puffy Fraley's. We hiked the CCW route, opting for the steady climb to finish.

Great Day for a hike, Dustin's leaving tomorrow for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where it snowed a foot yesterday and the high temp. tomorrow is 12 degrees :lone: Thanks to Bob for all his hospitality during Dustin's stay and for lunch today. :y: This is a fabulous hike and well worth the effort both in a 200 mile round trip ride to the TH and in the hike itself. There are signs and warnings everywhere about everything from proper footwear to heat exhaustion. One sign stated that 177 people had been rescued from this trail in the past year, however, we did not find it particularly challenging compared to the usual hikes we take in the Superstition Mountains almost weekly. :SB: The Springs and the Falls were spectacular, everyone took a dip and had lunch in front of the falls, great fun!! : app :

Had a great day Hike with my boy's.

Fossil Creek is a gem in the desert. The stark contrast between the desert and the lush valley is really something amazing. My boy's were excited to go in the stream and were really impressed with the waterfalls which being AZ have never seen before (at least not that they remember).

We started around noon and finished just after sunset. I thought it was interesting that the parking lot had only a few cars in it but then again it is still early in the season. To cold for me to go all the way in the water. We only saw six other people on the trail and at the 'toilet' bowl.

We really had a great time and I wish we had started earlier and had spent more time exploring the old dam site and walking out down along the creek edge. Another regret is not having come up here when the old dam and flume were in place. I would have liked to have had some perspective. Still very happy that APC decommissioned it all and appear to have done a really nice job cleaning it all out.

I couldn't believe it had been four years since my last trip down to Fossil Creek, so today seemed like the perfect opportunity to go. I rounded up a handful of people and we made the trek down under the blazing sun. We had a few veterans and a few newbies, but all had fun swimming and cliff jumping once we arrived.

i've hiked down to fossil creek twice before the dam was decommissioned, once in 2006 and once before 1998
been wanting to go back, and john hadn't been here at all
he even took a monday off so we could avoid some of the crowds
arrived at the trailhead early enough that only three or four cars were in the parking lot
didn't see anyone on the way down, until near the creek when we ran into a couple of backpackers hiking out
noticable amount of smoke in the canyon from the horse tank fire north of strawberry
crossed the creek bed and went past the camping area to the old dam site
took a dip there, sharing the place with just five younger guys
nice place for a swim and the water felt great
i wanted to see the waterfall on the other end, so we hiked down the flume trail for a few miles
dropped down off trail to the waterfall trail, and backtracked to the waterfall
went for another swim as we crossed the creek, then went up to the waterfall
started seeing more and more people, along with a corresponding amount of garbage
the waterfall was nice, and i'm glad we went there, but way too many people to enjoy it
went back to another pool for a snack and one last swim
hiked out forest road 708, which is now closed to vehicle traffic
essentially followed the loop bruce and joe did last april, but from the top
such a beautiful area, and i enjoyed seeing more of it
but the amount of water bottles, toilet paper, food scraps, wrappers and general garbage is disgusting
it's a shame that some of the visitors treat the wilderness as one big dumpster
on a monday, john counted about 60 people at the waterfall, with numbers rising to well over 100 as we hiked toward the road
while the warm temps make swimming fun, i wouldn't do this hike when school is out
i liked the dam area better, but by the time we got back to my truck, the lot was full and the dam was probably just as crowded
another time i would explore more of the creek, rather than hiking above it
a good time in spite of the garbage rant
good company, too - thanks john
hit that brewery on the way home, and then dq in payson
made it back just in time for the women's world cup soccer game

A slice of paradise. One of those hikes I have never done because of the negatives. Too many people and trash. Figured it wouldn't be too crowded on a Monday. Wrong.

First 2/3rds of the hike we only saw a handful of people. Pays to get an early start. We hiked down the Fossil Springs trail. The old dam site is very cool and the swimming is fun. Didn't think the Flume trail would have so much elevation gain. I thought water flowed down hill! :-k

The Waterfall trail/creek has many awesome easy to get to swimming holes. By the time we got to the waterfall, the area was getting crowded. Only stayed about fifteen minutes. We saw about fifty more people hiking in as we were hiking out. Hard to imagine what a weekend day would be like here. :o

We hiked out on the FS road. There is enough garbage to fill a couple of pick up truck beds in and along the road. The whole loop is pretty much littered. Unbelievable people have no regard for the environment or others. I've seen cleaner homeless camps. It's no wonder they feel the need to restrict access. I'm in favor of it.

Overall experience though is very good. Had a great day. Always fun hiking with Kelly. Thanks for the blizzard! :)

Since moving here, I've managed to hike for years without seeing Fossil Creek. When I learned of the road's partial closure, I figured that might thin the crowds somewhat, and when Richard and Alana asked me to come along, why not? We wanted to make a loop that included both the Fossil Springs and Flume Trails. At the dam, we all swam under the cave-like alcove a little ways downstream, which was impressive. Rincon loved the water once we made it down the trail through the pinon-juniper forest, and he had his first encounter with a Mojave rattler along the Flume Trail. Warm and breezy all day, which made swimming fun. Long slog back up, but it was a good day and had a tired dog at the end.

I hadn't hiked this trail since the late 90's when we used to hike on top of the flume.

We got on the trail Saturday morning around 9:30 and kept a leisurely pace to the springs. I'm 14 weeks pregnant now, and I have to say, I sure don't have the energy I usually do!! The hike itself isn't great, but for a road hike it has it's moments. There were lots of wildflowers along the way and the weather was perfect. We made it to the old dam noon and it was full of people hanging around. We headed back a ways and made camp in gorgeous little clearing. There was one other group there but they left shortly after our arrival. We did a bit of swimming and spent the day relaxing. Sunday morning we headed out taking about 2 hours to make it back to the car. Overall a great little piece of paradise here in AZ.

The meetup group I was doing this with went from 14 people to 4 overnight. That didn't stop the four of us that went from having fun. We had the waterfall to ourselves for a long time and then migrated down to the cave, which we also had free reign over. The temperature was perfect and so were the swimming conditions for late October. One of my hiking companions was practically raised outdoors and she picked blackberries, grapes and prickly pear fruit for us to nibble on. It was relaxing, adventurous and educational all in the same day.

I think this was my first backpack in about 10 months. It was great to see this area all cleaned up and looking good. We arrived Friday night late with headlamps, not a creature was stirring....except massive daddy longlegs. We made a "fun-do" fondue as a midnight snack and spent Saturday enjoying the creek and the hike out. Ran over to the Waterfall hike afterwards and really loved that area.

This is one of about five that have been on my list forever....

Finally talked señor José into visiting the crystal clear cool blue green waters of Fossil Creek.
The Flume Trail was also on the list and made a convenient loop.

We were the second car in the Waterfall Trail TH at about 8am. Hiking CCW, we climbed the 5+ mile closed to vehicle portion of Fossil Creek Rd. This get's the majority of the elevation out of the way easily on the road. Some great views of the Fossil Creek area from up on this road.

At around 10am we made the Fossil Springs TH and about 30 cars. I was not expecting solitude on this hike, just Blue Green Waters. For the amount of cars, the trail was not crowded at all.

Lush and green at the bottom opened up to more and more water. Just prior to seeing our first spring, Joe walked overtop of a 4' Gopher Snake. Now the famous waters kicked in.

We made our way to the old Dam area. It was interesting to find out that before it was decommissioned and ripped out, the Dam was 14' taller. Joe pointed out the Toilet Bowl as we crossed over the creek to the Flume trail.

You had to look pretty close to see the remnants of the old Flume. The pathway was visible in spots, as well as some of the footings and hardware. I really enjoyed the views of the creek from the Flume Trail.

The track I'd drawn up jumped off the Flume and made it's way for the Waterfall on the Waterfall Trail. Warning for those that may follow the posted track, the last drop to the creek is steep and loose, but offers different views of the natives jumping the 40' into the Blue Green pools below.

Lunch was on the creek next to a 15' diameter whirlpool. There were probably 30 or so people enjoying the waters and taking turns jumping to the waters below

The Waterfall Trail is jungle-like and well traveled

Back to the truck and parking lot that was one other car, was now full, as well as all the other lots and roadsides.

This is a special area that everyone has to experience. Weekdays, before school lets out for the summer, Recommended.

Bruce has wanted to hike the area for some time. I kept brushing it aside since the historic flume is gone. Fossil Springs is one of the most popular hikes in the state. After a little self attitude adjustment it dawned on me most would get excited to visit Fossil so what the heck... bring it on!

Albeit an obvious loop and nothing over the top this is a wham duzzel of a loop! ( gps here )

Fossil Trail #18 was pretty much as I recall from 2005. While not shaded there are a lot of shade opportunities near the junipers anytime except high noon.

The Flume Trail was interesting to see how well they removed the flume. Nice views for a road walk. Still feels like it's hotter on that road than anywhere else. Junipers are good at creating that feeling. You see shade but rarely experience it first hand.

The Waterfall Trail is just a slice of heaven. This was my first trip and I'll be back. Bruce likes to do all the popular stuff like A.B. Young, West Fork and Waterfall... backwards. This is also interesting as I traveled the creek up decades ago.
