Follow Humphreys trail to the last north to south switchback (using maps) then go through the trees on what looks like a very small unmaintained trail. It becomes really steep and we were on all fours like a native bear. It was starting to get dark as we traversed over the ridges to find the crash site. We found the large boulder field and started seeing some debris right as the sun was setting. There is a landing gear sticking straight up probably as tall as a na'vi from the Avatar. Then we voyaged straight up the rockfall - which was small rocks easy to climb - to intercept humphreys trail as the sky darkened and needed flashlights. There are SO many false peaks. Don't be alarmed and try to keep morale up. Peak was so peaceful at night!! There were thunderstorms in the distance and the temps were a little chilly. We followed the official trail on the descent.

For day three, I decided to tolerate the crowds and hike Humphreys, one I'd done a few times before but not in the past 5+ years. I started from Snowbowl ~7:30AM, and it was swarming with people...not surprising, but the sight still had me questioning my decision. The trail was much as I remembered it--lots of rocks and tree roots, and the views don't open up much until clearing the trees near the saddle. There were brief stretches when I had the trail to myself but many more when I was trying to navigate through traffic.

It got up to the peak in about two hours and was pleased that there were only five other people on top when I arrived. Lots of bees, but the weather was much nicer than any of my previous visits, with comfortable temperatures and virtually no wind. I'd planned to hike to Fremont Peak tomorrow as part of a longer loop but decided to head over there now since it was only ~9:30AM and there was plenty of day left. I hung out on the peak for a while, then started down as more and more people arrived. Some places looked like a solid line of hikers coming up as I hiked back to the saddle, then immediate relief once I was on Weatherford.

I passed a few groups as I rounded Agassiz and followed the switchbacks down to Fremont Saddle, where I took a quick break for food/sunscreen. I left the trail there and made the climb up to Peak 11673, which the guide accurately describes as merely a bump on the road to Fremont. The off-trail up to the summit wasn't too bad--some pine branches to push through and a steep and rocky final ascent up to the peak, which has a rock wall windbreak with a wooden post sticking up.

[ youtube video ]

The summit provides a good perspective of the Pipeline burn scar that covers the south/east sides of Fremont, runs along the ridgeline of Doyle and covers much of the area to the south, dividing the mountain into green and brown halves. I took another food break at the top, which the gnats and bees did their best to make it tough to enjoy. The summit register had a lot of familiar HAZ names, and I added mine and then returned to Weatherford Trail via the same route and hiked back to the crowded Humphreys intersection and started down.

Along the way, I left the trail to check out the B-24 crash site. I visited it six years ago but had forgotten just how many large and recognizable airplane parts this site has--much more interesting than the B-17 site on Rees I visited yesterday. This site has become more popular--I saw at least three other people wandering around the scree slope with the wreckage. One of the guys I saw returned to the trail around the same time as me and showed his waiting friends his bloody arm--he'd apparently suffered a fall on the boulders.

The last few miles were easy downhill that practically hiked themselves, and I was back at Snowbowl around 2:30PM. The crowds on Humphreys were predictably annoying but not as bad I expected, and it was nice seeing some new parts of the SF Peaks. After a break in the shade, I decided to hike part of Kachina Trail before driving back to Flagstaff since it was still early.

This one had been on my wish list for quite some time. Hiked to peak June 30, 2019. Finally returned for this outing. 5 of us met at 7:15, TH 10 am. Had to park across the street. Mad people on the trail.

The beginning of this outing is currently rerouted. Was huffing & puffing from the get go. 😩 That may have been the most difficult portion of the outing. 😎

Was thrilled to escape all the people. Found the wreckage easier than expected. It was also more impressive than I imagined. Returning to the summit can wait another year.

I have been wanting to do this hike for some time and since many of the other trails were closed due to fire hazard this was a good a time as any to cross this one off the list. I followed the posted guide route and had no issues finding it. The climb up to the seventh switchback was a steady uphill but that's what I expected. At least I didn't have to do the next 1500 to the top of Humphry and battle the gazilion flies. The Humphry trail is a bit rocky in places but the climb is gradual so it wasn't too bad. Once at the seventh switchback there is a faint user trail heading north. Ginny and I took a break here and enjoyed the view west.

Following the route I had on my GPS made finding it pretty easy but if you don't have a GPS the route is marked with cairns every so often. There were multiple routes cairned just pick the one that looks the easiest. The cairns aren't always there when you need them but I just kept heading north and slightly up and eventually I would see another cairn. The rock fields are the hardest part of the route, slow going. The cairns are quite easy to spot on the rock slides. At the third rock slide crossing is the crash site. I explored the rock slide area with all of the debris from the B24 but I never went down just below the rock slide, This is where the plane plowed into the ground sending debris up hill. I wish I had gone down a little further. Quite an interesting hike and maybe someday I will do it again.

The Humphry trail had a number of people hiking, some going to the peak, some to the saddle and some just taking a stroll till they got tired, but overall a light day for hikers. The weather held off for us to finish the hike, it is always exhilarating to be that high up in a lightning storm.

My friend Hannah and Tom wanted to do this hike today. I told them I would take them to the bomber crash site on the way down. Unfortunately I missed the place to exit the trail and didn’t realize it until a few switchbacks later. Luckily I was able to talk to them into hiking up the scree to the wreckage. This added Almost 2 miles And 600 feet to the hike because we took the trail back down from the normal exit point. It was definitely worth it though. They both really enjoyed it.

We got run off the mountain early by thunderstorms last year when we did this hike. Much better luck this time around. Left Phoenix at 5AM and got to the quickly filling trailhead at 7am. Lots of groups heading for the summit. We had the crash site all to ourselves for the duration of our visit. Scrambled to the top of the debris field to check out the landing gear and motor. It was slow going across the scree field. Storms rolled in as we were heading back into Flagstaff for some post hike treats.

Hit up the summit trail today. Perfect weather. Got an early start from Phoenix in an effort to beat some of the expected crowds on a Labor Day weekend. The parking area was about 75% full when we arrived around 8 am. I expected there to be somewhat of a conga line on the trail, but was pleasantly surprised to the contrary. A number of folks out, to be sure, but not the masses I was expecting. FS rangers were parked at the TH, giving warnings and advice to the novice hikers who may not know what to expect on a hike like this.

What a spectacular day to be out! Nice temps throughout. Sunny skies and only a slight breeze on the summit--with only a manageable number of summit bugs.

On the way down, I finally decided to make the sidetrip to the B24 bomber site--in just a couple of weeks (Sept. 15), it will have been 75 years since the crash. The off-trail wasn't too bad, with some helpful cairns here and there, and some discernable use trails in spots. An amazing amount of wreckage, strewn over quite a debris field. As tragic as the crash was, I can only imagine it was a spectacular sight (which probably no one witnessed, as it occurred shortly after midnight). Some interesting info and more detailed photography of the incident at: https://www.lostflights.com/Other-1/915 ... ted-B-24J/

On the way down, I popped out of the woods at the junction between the 2nd and 3rd switchbacks and just cross-country-ed it down the ski slopes to the parking area. Best decision ever. At that point in the hike, I'm pretty sick and tired of the rocky and tree-root-strewn trail. Saves about .3 to .4 in distance.

Ate at Mama Burger on the way back. The burgers are overrated in my view, but the Oreo shake and tater tots hit the spot!

First hike of Autumn, done entirely in the last hours of summer, concluding about 40 minutes before the sun's vertical rays crossed the equator! It sure looked and felt like fall, either way. There was still some humidity or haze, probably from the storm last week, limiting visibility, but it was nice. I guess true fall conditions would be dry with long range visibility up.

Being a Saturday, fall or summer crowds were out on the mountain, and the summit was too busy for my taste. I got use to those alone on Humphrey mid-week summits, this year. That just meant I cut visit #110 short and opted for solitude and nature time at the spring, which was flowing nicely. The collection box was dry, but just up slope you'll find the real spring, which may be frozen in a few weeks.

My route was basically a reverse of Joe's June of 2013 GPS route and hike, but I cut some fat by hiking my winter route past where the trail meets the Dutchman, and went through the bomber wreck, then I cut some more fat by going through some meadow to meet the AZT further south. I cute 2.5 miles, which felt right. I moved a lot slower than I thought I would going down, primarily due to me repeatedly losing the social or game trail, and having to cross tons of down trees. This just meant I got to listen to more nuthatches and chickadees, which was nice. This was fine, as I took my excercise going up, where I was pleased.

7am start with Gallydoll, Jan and Yolanda Starting temps were in the lower 50's. Humphreys trail was damp and the roots were slippery. I used CdninAZ's GPS track as a guide. There are several faint trails and cairns everywhere. Crossing the boulder fields on the way out really slowed us down. I was aiming to come in at the lower part of the debris field and then work our way to the top and then back out. Just as we arrived at the wing, FLASH BOOM! Lightning and thunder! We made a beeline for cover of the trees below. We cut our exploration short and started back for the trailhead. Minutes after getting back to the truck the rain started and didn't end until we got to Anthem.

Finally got to knock this peak out. Third times the charm as they always say. Got to play a little on this hike too as I took a friend to see the bomber crash site before we hiked to the top. Was absolutely humbling being back to that site again. This hike was nice and painful near the top. Nice and cool even in May. Packed sandwiches for the top and enjoyed the view. Absolutely loved seeing the pinks of the painted desert and tried to find the Grand Canyon but I think it was too polluted to see that day. Felt good to finally kick this mountain's butt and make the summit.

Need trail info? PM me.

This hike was absolutely humbling. I spontaneously decided to take a trip to Flagstaff and planned to summit Humphreys but decided to do this hike instead. I am very glad that I did. The hike to the turn off wasn't as bad as I had been expecting- my cardio is definitely improving. Got a little lost trying to find the route at first before I spotted my first cairn. Followed them to the crash site with a lot of help from Route Scout.

I didn't know what to expect from this hike but as I came across the wreckage, I felt incredible awe. This was real. This had happened. I took my time, examining as much of the downed aircraft as I could. I was already planning my return with an earlier start and more daylight to thoroughly examine everything. Seeing the broken pieces changed something in me and I think I left a part of myself on the mountain that day, forever dancing with those airmen. Two weeks later, that hike is still affecting me and I have definitely become a different person in a very good way (though that is a part of a much larger journey that I have been on- a lot of my hikes are very healing for me). I cannot wait to go back and have more time with the plane, to sit and think and let go of the troubling parts of life.

This hike was amazing. There have been other downed aircraft around the San Francisco Peaks, I have learned, and although there are no routes for them, I intend to find them and sit with them in the same awe with which I saw this plane. My hike back was stupendously easy once I found the cairns and I kinda felt dumb for not catching them right when I started off route. Will definitely make it easy to find when I go back. With the cairns guiding you, the route finding really isn't that bad. I cut across the loose volcanic rocks until I sighted the wreckage than just made my way to the top and worked my way down. It was truly amazing to see just how far the wreck went, from the forest all the way to the top of the rocks. So very humbling. If anyone would like me to take them to this spot, I would be more than happy to! (And if anyone would like to help me find the other crash sites, hmu)

It couldn't have been better! Despite the parking issues and Snowbowl basically overflowing, and having to delay by a day due to what I consider to be extreme winds, the snow is the best it has been in years. Probably, the best snow since 2010! Deep, and in very good shape, right now. It was still windy, but I planned for that. Long distance views were also up there, but clouds in Utah kept clarity on the Henry's, Pine Valleys, and Navajo Mountain a little low. The Mazatzals, Whites, Hualapais, and on, were all very good.

It was still rather windy, and the strong NE wind forced me towards the south side of the ridge, but coming down it was mostly at my back, so I took the cornice, which is harder to use to descend than I remember. At least with my snowshoes, as I didn't carry my crampons which might have been useful. I found it pretty windy on the ridge, and very much so on the summit, but there were nice protected areas where I found calm conditions.

I was also pretty pleased that I found up hill travel easier than I thought it would be, even with the dry cold air. Including my 15 minutes or so for lunch, it was right on 4 hours from my car to the summit. 30 minutes on top, and 2 hours down, as well. Wind scour has kept the snow dense and hard in a lot of exposed areas, but in the trees it yielded and was pleasant to go down through. Still, no powder day, but the snow stopped 4 days ago. However, that density was why it was easier to go up.

All in all, a very good day out on the Peaks on this old favorite, and Humphrey.

Finally took a full day for a big hike. Had been up to Humphreys Summit in June, wanted to return for a visit to B-24 Bomber Crash Site. Had read on here that can be difficult to find but using HAZ got me to debris field - first sighting was a wing section at bottom of rock slide so contrary to HAZ route crossed the slide area and then followed the debris field up the rock slide to the HAZ route. There is a very nice monument near top area, just below end of HAZ route - a landing gear strut serving as a flag pole, stabilized with a piece of aircraft skin. Very nice. Had not seen pics of that anywhere online, wonder if built recently. I paused at attention for a minute of reflection then took some pics - all in a photoset. Explored for a while.

Got off trail on way back and came out in ravine below Humphreys Trail. Once back on it decided to continue up to saddle. Made terrible time, guess my legs took revenge for all the rock scrambling on slides to/from crash site. Cold up at saddle, especially in my Tshirt and shorts. Of course I had extra cover in Camelbak, but I enjoyed the cool air for a nice change. Hung out for half hour.

ETA - snow down to about 10,000 looking over at north faces, some along trail starting at 11,000.
ETA2 - included some pics in photoset of fall colors along SnowBowl Road

Great day to be hiking up a mountain. Felt rather somber at GZ having 29 years ago survived an F-16 crash saved only by only a few seconds and some technology unavailable to the crew of this old bomber. Sat among the wreckage for a good while just gazing out across the impressive view. The strut on the landing gear (where the flag hangs) looks almost new. Placed my hand on it and said a quiet prayer that the souls lost here are at peace.

Hiked with a group of hikers with mixed experience hiking. Took our sweet time with a number of lengthy breaks along the way to accommodate the less experienced hikers and we found the crash site. Amazing history and beautiful views along the way. Look forward to doing this hike again.

Steven K
Steven and I met up at the closed ranger station and headed into the backcountry permitless. We ended up following the summer trail (very icy and slippery in some spots) to the first switchback. From there, we slowly crept up to Dutchman Glade.

Unbeknownst to me, I lead our northeast trajectory about half way up the glade without realizing how much further we should have gone. The result was the longest half mile I've ever traveled in my life - 700ft of gain in knee-high snow. Steven wasn't able to acquire a pair of snowshoes for this outing so I leveled the playing field and kept mine on my back for this section. The crusty, solid snow would give way to absolute powder any time I would begin to comment on stability.

To correct our premature NE spur, we began to gradually work our way SE, making mostly uneducated guesses on which spots of snow would give us the least resistance. In an open area below 11,000ft, I encountered the deepest I had seen all day. It took me about 3 minutes to move 20ft off to the side to some trees. Time was turning against us at this point and we were more than ready to reach the bomber wreck to assess our turn around time and the possibility of the reaching Humphreys.

Finally, around 230pm, we were at the bottom of the crash site and after some rest and calorie intake at the landing gear, the decision to head down and save the peak for another day won out. We made our way down some excellent powder, eventually met up with our tracks from earlier, and reached the parking lot with hardly any light left.

The majority of the day was type-1 fun, with a hint of type-2 to make things interesting. Very exciting to be out on snow for the first time. Going to have to make it back up there soon for some redemption. Thanks for the company, Steven!

- I'll have some pictures tomorrow, Jim.

Great weather for the summit of Humphrey's Peak considering the regularity of wind, rain, etc on top. We did the hike with a MeetUp group and enjoyed the temps with almost no wind so we spent about 45 mins on top enjoying the view. The trail was somewhat crowded with the usual assortment of unprepared people....ran into a girl near the summit wearing flip flops held together with duck tape and blood running down her leg. Amazing she made the summit and still had a smile on her face...crazy! Despite that we ran into and hiked with some really nice people that made it seem not so crowded.

On the way down we decided to check out the B24 Crash site for an extra challenge. Getting over to the site is basically half mile off trail with a faint route and requires negotiating some boulder fields. The crash site is on fairly steep slope in the middle of a large boulder field. Definitely worth the side trip and interesting to see all the wreckage. Fun hike...we really lucked out on the weather :)

Ahhh, the quirkiness of people. Thirteen people signed up for a 7AM hike up Humphreys and five of us show and we don't start hiking until 9AM. :?

Once we got started, this became a top ten hike for me. There was the smells of pine and wet leaves. The glistening snow along the trail showing the way. Just when you would start to get a little warm a crisp refreshing breeze would blow through. We really lucked out with the weather. And everyone we chatted with seemed to be in good spirits.

I had made Karl put the GPS track for the bomber on the GPS. We were going to find it on the way down, if the energy level still existed. We had accumulated some hiking buddies on the trail, and Karl gave them the disclaimer that they were not obligated to follow. They didn't know if they should trust him or not. Then when Karl started climbing up the boulder field you could tell they weren't sure what was going on. We had a lot of laughs and gave them some stories to tell at work the next day!

I wish I hadn't waited so long to mark this hike off the list! :?
