Hiked the Brown canyon loop with Brian and Tim starting at about 8 am. The was my final peak (out of 17) from the Tucson mountains within the Southern Arizona Hiking Club list. The morning was a comfortable temperature but it got warmer by about Noon. From the very top we were able to see the summit of Wasson peak in the distance, along with a few other nearby mountains. We could see some of the buildings on Kitt Peak from the summit. We saw a non-venomous garden snake on the trail near the campground area. We saw one other solo hiker on the entire trail/mountain.

Finally got off my butt and did my first hike since November. All things considered, it went pretty well with no pain issues, just not much stamina due to inactivity. Staged it from the Brown Mountain Picnic Area and went counterclockwise. I did modify the length of the loop by doing a short bushwhack from the lower portion up to a saddle to catch the upper ridgeline portion of the trail for the return loop. This allowed me to bypass going up around the last western hill near the Juan Santa Cruz Picnic Area. Once I got up to the ridgeline the wind was really blowing hard, but it did help me not overheat. I'm lucky I didn't lose my hat though!

Back at the lower elevation it was less windy but a bit warmer. I stopped at at the picnic table near where I parked to enjoy the shade of the ramada and unwind from the hike. There was a truck with Indiana plates parked nearby with the motor running and a couple carrying on a conversation inside. Just as I was about to get up and leave, they turned off the truck and got out with some food, so I yelled out and said, "The table is all yours!" The man smiled and said, "We were just waiting for the wind to die down. Today is my birthday and this is our little celebration." I said to him, "Today is my birthday too. How about that." He looked at me and said, "I'll bet you aren't as old as me." I figured he was right, but didn't want to say anything. He said "I'm 80," to which I replied, "I'm 74." With that, we exchanged the obligatory "Happy Birthday" remarks, said goodbye, and I headed home. :)

Nice easy little hike along the brown mountain ridge line. Views aren’t bad at the top. Good hike to do in the area if you want something quick.

First time on this trail for me. Shauna and I did a clockwise loop starting at the trailhead on McCain Loop Road. A giant hawk watched us with disinterest atop a tall saguaro on the way up while I “held hands” with another saguaro’s low hanging arm nearby. Majestic saguaro forest and heathy desert flora were a comforting sight. Had a nice view of the greater part of the Tucson Mountains to the east. Bushmaster and Towers peaks beckoned and might warrant a visit this winter. Mount Wrightson looked like an iceberg in the distance. Crazy geology and colorful rocks along the route. Brown Mountain Ridgeline is a worthy hike when in the area, I say.

A nice day for a hike. I started out alone, but ran into another friendly hiker, and found we had a couple of Tucson friends in common from the Arizona Trail Assn. I had hiked to this very small peak only once before, about 25 years ago, and I'm sure I didn't do a whole ridgeline thing at that time. I'm aiming to hike trails I haven't hiked before. I think this one has been significantly lengthened since the mid 90's.

It was a glorious day, and not too crowded, although toward the end we ran into several groups.

Finished Safford Peak by noon and still had time to get in another hike, might as well since I'm on the west side of town. Brown Mountain Ridgeline Loop is a fairly easy hike along a mountain ridge that runs between Old Tucson and the Desert Museum. I started from the Brown Mountain Picnic area and took the loop in a clockwise direction. As you head north toward the Desert Museum the trail passes over 3 peaks the second one being the highest. On the return route the trail passes over a low saddle then follows low on the eastern slopes of Brown Mountain. This is an interesting hike with nominal views of Old Tucson and the Desert Museum and the peaks of the Tucson Mountains to the east. Don't rush out to do this trail but if you are in the area or get bored with Old Tucson Or the Desert Museum (can't imagine the later), duck out for an hour and a half and do this hike. A good workout if you keep the 2.5 to 3 MPH pace throughout the hike. Don't forget to check out Golden Gate Mountain to the east of Old Tucson. How many times have you seen that peak in some old western or the TV series High Chaparral. This trail can be accessed either at the Brown Mountain Picnic area, the Gilbert Ray Camp Ground or at the Santa Cruz Picnic area near the Desert Museum.

I really needed to get out of the house and do some hiking, so this was my choice, as it is convenient from home. More clouds were around than I expected and that made for an enjoyable midday hike. :)

I wanted to get out and hike in the desert after that glorious rain event we had down in this part of the state. Totally socked in with widespread fog all night and I waited for the sun to start making an appearance to head over there. I was savoring that humidity and enjoying the aftermath of a long overdue storm! I walked most of the ridgeline before heading back the way I came. Lots of folks out there today.

Lee wanted to bring his dog Annie on our hike, so we headed for Brown Mtn Loop. Haven't been there in a year. Everything was glistening still with drops of rain (or dew maybe?) and was SUPER lush and awesome!!!! Again, my favorite desert is over there in the Tucsons - it's all so green right now!!!!! It was really hard not to trail run a lot of that, but Lee isn't a runner, so we hesitantly walked.

Had a couple old ladies ask us if we knew that dogs weren't allowed in that area. It's confusing, because some areas specifically say no dogs, but this one doesn't, and I've seen many people with dogs there. I have also never seen any rangers there, as it's not a super popular hike. I've never had anyone comment on having Tug there either until today. They claimed to be park volunteers and said they wanted to warn us because there are rangers around.....hmmmmmm.......

Mom and I haven't been to Brown Mtn in a LONG time! I forgot I wasn't supposed to like it and went along sniffing all the yummy coyote smells. Since Annie the dog went with us, I figured it was ok. :D

What a beautiful little hike! I had arranged for a loner vehicle while my Forester had its routine oil change etc., and was looking for something relatively short and easy that still incorporated some elevation gain, was nearby, and something I had never done before. This hike fit the bill perfectly.

I started from the Gilbert Ray Campground end. As much as I love long and/or difficult hikes, it was really nice to be able to kickback and cruise on autopilot. The trail is obvious the whole way, junctions are well marked, and there are even many segments with no rocks or very little rock.

However, no hike is complete without a little bushwhacking… so after taking some pics from the highpoint on Peak 3098, [which is only a few feet off the main trail], I was eyeing the next peak on the ridgeline and contemplating how to approach it, [given that the main trail went only a short way up the base]. After descending 3098 and then regaining some elevation, I broke from the main trail the moment it seemed to level out. It took all of 30-60 seconds to reach the top, and it was fun 'riding out' the unofficial route that was right on top of the ridgeline, eventually bringing me back to the main trail.

Meetup group hike. I had only done this trail once before, about 14 years ago. It really is a nice mellow loop hike that you can stage from either end. We did it from the east, going up the ridgeline, then back on the lower route. Perfect day for this one! :)
