| no partners | | Finally got off my butt and did my first hike since November. All things considered, it went pretty well with no pain issues, just not much stamina due to inactivity. Staged it from the Brown Mountain Picnic Area and went counterclockwise. I did modify the length of the loop by doing a short bushwhack from the lower portion up to a saddle to catch the upper ridgeline portion of the trail for the return loop. This allowed me to bypass going up around the last western hill near the Juan Santa Cruz Picnic Area. Once I got up to the ridgeline the wind was really blowing hard, but it did help me not overheat. I'm lucky I didn't lose my hat though!
Back at the lower elevation it was less windy but a bit warmer. I stopped at at the picnic table near where I parked to enjoy the shade of the ramada and unwind from the hike. There was a truck with Indiana plates parked nearby with the motor running and a couple carrying on a conversation inside. Just as I was about to get up and leave, they turned off the truck and got out with some food, so I yelled out and said, "The table is all yours!" The man smiled and said, "We were just waiting for the wind to die down. Today is my birthday and this is our little celebration." I said to him, "Today is my birthday too. How about that." He looked at me and said, "I'll bet you aren't as old as me." I figured he was right, but didn't want to say anything. He said "I'm 80," to which I replied, "I'm 74." With that, we exchanged the obligatory "Happy Birthday" remarks, said goodbye, and I headed home. |
