A nice trail with views of Show Low Lake and the surrounding area. The hike started a little warm as there was full sun and not much shade along the edges of the mesa. This changed once we began hiking through the middle of the mesa and were treated to tall ponderosa pines, some cloud cover and a light drizzle. A great trail for cool or cloudy days.

Week 1 staying at my sister's place in Lakeside, decided to hit as many of the trails in the areas as possible to train for some big upcoming events.

Tuesday morning - Woodland trails

4.5 miles, 41 minutes - Took the hound dog up Turkey Track, down the back half of Hitching Post, and then around Woodland Lake. Somewhat aggressive pace. The house is a quarter mile from trail system access, which is nice.

Tuesday afternoon - Country Club Loop w/ Pat Mullen Mountain

4.4 miles, 51 minutes - Nice gentle grade until the spur, then a little hiking up to the summit. The amount of twists and turns on the 2nd half of the loop was annoying. The top of the hill is nice enough.

Wednesday morning - Woodland trails

6 miles, 1 hour - Brought dog again, did the Hitching Post loop followed by Turkey Track/Walnut.

Thursday morning - Timber Mesa

7.5 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes - Thought it was going to be a lot flatter at the top. Still kinda flat, but some rollers. Map mileage was right on. It's a pleasant enough loop, with some decent views here and there.

Thursday afternoon - Springs loop

3.4 miles, 37 minutes - with dog. Both of us enjoyed this one (which is to say, I enjoyed it, as she enjoys any and all trails). Creek is still flowing.

Friday morning - Woodland trails

4.4 miles, 49 minutes - with dog. Turkey Track, Walnut, Big Springs loop, then down Hitching Post.

Definitely a nice change of pace from the PMP...

Having a hard time keeping up with triplogs with all the vacationing (hiking) that I’m doing. This was our last day in Pinetop, so I had to get an early hike in before we left. Got to the TH around 6am. I had been on a small part of this trail last year when I did the Osprey Trail. Decided to follow the same route this time, CCW, when doing the loop. This turned out to being a very misleading trail. By going CCW there was short, rocky climb that got me to the mesa and then after that it was flat with some minor elevation change thrown. This top section was a beautiful, smooth single track ideal for running. Temps were great and it was fairly well forested (side note: they were doing quite a bit of logging on the mesa. So it was still shady, but the growth was cut almost in half), and I thought I would have a nice time for my run. This changed though as I came to the west side of the mesa. The trail dropped down to go along the slope of the mesa. This provided some nice views to the west, but the trail became very choppy (a lot of up and down) and rocky as well. This really slowed things, but was enjoyable in its own way.

I am getting close to having done all of the trails (that are loops) in the White Mountain Trail System and this is one of the better ones out there. Close to Pinetop and Showlow so it is very accessible, but still removed so that civilization is not making its present felt. It is a solid single track all the way through, which is uncommon for many of the trails in this system. And it has a good amount of trees so it is well shaded throughout the day. (Afternoon hikes might get a little toasty on the west side because the trees are not as dense as the trail makes its way along the western slopes).

Really nice way to finish my hiking time in Pinetop. I’m already looking forward to next year.

First stop in the White Mountains was for a run along Timber Mesa. Ran it clockwise, first 2.5 miles were super rocky and technical, without much elevation gain. Then a little confusing with the PML trail intersecting on the way back and I actually fell short of the listed 7.5 miles. Oh well.

Early rise from our Fool Hollow Lake campsite.
Quick pack up, breakfast & beautiful drive out to the trail-head.
We chose the clockwise loop.
Oaks/junipers/pinons/pines and with some great views out yonder.
Lots of yellow sunflowers here & there along with a very scenic sky above, temps at 6700 were nice & cool.
Met a friendly couple backpacking and another friendly couple horseback riding along the way.
Post hike was a drive back to Miami, Mexican food lunch at Guayo's El Ray and good-bye's to our friend ending our weekend trip.
Thank You Lauren for joining us :yr:
Thank You Addie for taking us :yr:

nice woodsy loop, with some occasional neat views along the beginning (going clockwise). well marked and easy to follow. the weather was largely fantastic. had a good picnic and nice chill pace. we all enjoyed this one and sierra cranked it out like nothing. this would be a good one to run, or link up with other stuff for a longer hike

followed this one up with some beer and food at Pinetop Brewery. Excellent! Michelle got after it for mother's day

In Show Low I previously did the Juniper ridge Trail and Ghost of the Coyote Trail - which I would NOT recommend - they are ATVs trail. This was different, no motorized vehicles allowed. The first two-thirds was a pleasant walk thru a pine forest, and fairly flat - the last third was up and down on the ridge line, providing plenty of exercise. Along this ridge line there are many very handsome views of the valley and lakes below. I went counter-clockwise, and my GPS read 8.09 miles

I thought I was doing okay, since I'd spent all night rolling out my muscles. Started running up the hill, but as soon as I got to the top my knee locked up. James waited with me for a few and then I tried to walk it off. Ended up making it a mile and a half in before turning around.. he continued running for another half mile, while I went back to the car and found an Old Rasputin we could share when he got back. Liz and Adam ended up having particularly good running days this day. It was a really enjoyable day.

My first time around this loop. It's a pretty nice hike, although a lot of it is very flat, when you are on the mesa. I saw only two other people: a mtn. biker and his girlfriend who was a runner. At one point the human footprints in the trail disappeared and I realized that a herd of elk had been walking along the trail a few minutes in front of me, but I never did see them. I went on this hike after having attended the TRACKS Christmas party. It was fun, there were about 50 people there, and the food was great. But I couldn't convince any of them that an after-brunch hike would be just the thing, so I went by myself!

What a windy day for a hike. Uphill into the wind is a real challenge.
