My friend Nikki had never been to Picacho and asked if I would take her. We started on the Sunset Vista Trail, and immediately encountered a group of 18 who were here from Anthem. After that, it was pretty much smooth sailing to the top where we met a couple other guys who came up Im thx Hunter Trail but mentioned they would be going down via the Sunset and walking in the road. I offered to give them the keys to my 4Runner so we could go down to Hunter Trail and they could just meet us at the trailhead. That way Nikki could see both trails. We met them at the Hunter trailhead and then she and I went to Dairy Queen for some cherry dipped cones.

It's been a lot of years since I climbed Picacho, and I had never done the Sunset Vista Trail, so we decided to hit it up.

Since being here last, a visitor center has been installed and a $20/vehicle entrance fee.

I assumed that most folks would be hiking the more popular Hunter Trail, but I was surprised how many vehicles were at the SV trailhead. Not a full parking lot, but quite a few vehicles.

I had relatively low expectations of the trail, as my assumption was just a continuation of the dustbowl desert that surrounds the peak and is famous for causing major pile ups on I-10 during haboob season.

The experience definitely beat these low expectations. The trail starts out by going up a reasonably interesting ravine. After that, the trail rolls up and down and reminds me of the south side of the Pass Mountain loop. Some pretty solid saguaro forest stands along the route.

The climb up to join the Hunter trail is steep and fun. A long cabled section just before the junction provides some spice, but is easy to navigate with lots of good footholds to complement the cables.

From there, the traffic naturally increased, along with some bottlenecks at the narrow, semi-technical sections. But we didn't have to wait too long.

The views from the top were nice, despite one woman issuing a few blood-curdling screams when a bee landed on her.

Last time I came, we wandered across the saddle to the other point, above the crossover area on the Hunter trail. This time it was closed off due to an apparent nesting area for a protected bird species.

We stopped briefly at the Visitors Center on the way out. Basically a small gift shop with bathrooms.

Enjoyed the hike, but probably won't be back for another few years.

A few months ago, I heard about a new self guided Irish Geology tour on Picacho and decided to check it out. After the third station, I tuned out the guide. No mention of de-gassed magma or Pre-Cambrian. It was Andesite Volcanic this and Lava rock that. 23 million years ago, volcanoes erupted blah, blah, blah. No mention of Charlie brown sweater paterns. Driving time was longer then the hike but still enjoyable.

Jill was wanting to hike Picacho since she’d never been there before, so we decided to get it done before it gets too warm. A handful of other hikers on the trail, but not too many. Warm, but a nice breeze, and the shaded areas were nice. Took a long break at the summit. Jill loved the hike, she likes anything involving scrambling. Now she’s interested in some longer hikes to build up endurance, which should not be a problem for her.

This was always on my radar, but some how never did it until now. Great trail, went to the peak, remembered my gloves. Had a good crew. The trail had quite a few people on it. We started at 9am. Had some bottlenecks at the very steep cable climb. I understand why its popular, I really enjoyed this hike. The wild flowers were just starting but not full force yet.

Video documentation of the trip.

This was the third time I've done this hike, but it's been just over 23 years since my last visit, pre-HAZ days for me. I did the loop hike like I did both times before, but instead of starting on the Hunter Trail and hiking clockwise, I started from the Sunset Vista TH and did the loop counterclockwise. The biggest plus from 23 years ago is that they have built an actual trail along the park road so that you don't hike to hike the asphalt and dodge traffic. I guess I wasn't the only person who did that.

the morning light along Sunset Vista gave a really neat view of the shadow that the mountain casts on the desert floor. Looking over at the Sawtooth and Silver Bell mountains was cool as well.

The last 2 times I did this, I descended on the cables on Sunset Vista. I remember this being kind of exhilarating since it's a pretty big drop and you need to hang on. This was the first time I ascended on them. Halfway up I felt gassed and needed to rest for a few seconds. I then noticed that my climbing gloves with the leather palms aren't really a good fit for the metal cables like they are for rope or rock and my hands were slipping. There's just enough exposure at the halfway point that if you lose your grip there could be a problem. Fortunately I got thru ok and made it to the top. Finding foot holds on the rock was easy except for maybe one spot where I needed to stretch my legs beyond the comfort zone of someone who was 23 years older.

Before that ascent, I only saw one other hiker, who was actually a trail runner :-k . After that, it was a full on ant trail. Each ascent on the next set of cables got my comfort level higher each time. At the last nearly vertical section I had to wait a good 10 minutes while a group of ladies took their time not letting the hike get in the way of their conversation about extra-terrestrial life  . At the top of that climb I was again gassed. The wait for people coming and going was less of an annoyance at this point trying to breathe. At one point I offered 2 other guys to go ahead of me and the one responded, "No, I need to breathe first".

On the final climb to the summit I lost the actual trail a few times due to the sun being in my eyes. There are several braids up there and a few cuts on the switchbacks. At the top I took the obligatory pics, had a snack and made my way back down.

I decided to make my way over to the shorter peak since there's an obvious trail that goes over there. At least it was obvious this time of year since the green is everywhere except on the trail. I made the easy scramble to the top of that peak and enjoyed the views there.

got back down and headed down the Hunter Trail. I thought all the work for the day was done but forgot about how much of an ascent there is up to the saddle on those cables. Exposure was no issue on that, but pulling myself up on the cables was really getting taxing at this point. I had to stop to take some pictures (i.e., rest and breathe :D ) at one point. On this section I saw a young couple on their way down and the dad had a baby backpack on with a 2 year old in tow :o . The child was sleeping which was probably best for all involved. I remember a few hikes when my daughter was little and a grumpy baby yelling in your ear does not make a hike more enjoyable, let alone a challenging one like this.

After the saddle it was all easy peezy. I was planning to hike the Calloway Trail to the overlook but I was behind on time. I didn't pack a lunch and I was getting hungry. Took the Barrett Loop Trail back to the Sunset Vista TH and called it a day. Stopped at the vistor center on the way out and got a fridge magnet and t-shirt.

The motivation for this hike was because this summer I'm planning a very challenging hike in Europe in the Alps which will involve some via ferrata for over a mile and 1000' AEG. This was the best match I could find and I hadn't been there in a long time. I need to start doing more vertical hikes to train for the hike this summer. This was only 2500' AEG for the day so I need to ramp it up. I feel pretty good though, having got thru this without too much difficulty except on the steepest sections. The hike this summer will be over 6000' AEG, but it will be split between 2 days, so I think I'm on the right track. : rambo :

In search of spring's floral show (Changed "flora" to "floral" for better flow)

Last year around this time, Turtle and I stumbled upon a bonanza of color. With the rains this year, we were hoping for a repeat. Dave joined us for the hike and became our personal photographer.

We were one of the first three cars in the lot and started our ascent on Hunter in a brisk, chilly wind. The scenery seemed unchanged from last year. We took a break at the first saddle, where Denny requested a Christmas card photo on the bench. A passerby stopped to ask if we had any spare water, as his hydration pack malfunctioned. As we began our descent, a lone F-35 fighter jet barrel rolled overhead, dipping low towards the desert floor in a southwesterly direction. Dave even saw it kick up dust!

Reaching the summit, we enjoyed a snack break. On the way down to Sunset, Dave and I decided to conquer the secondary peak.

Sunset has a steep section with cables, followed by a smooth path to the trailhead. This is where the flowers truly came into view.

Scorpion weed, desert chicory, lupine, buckwheat, fiddle-neck, and pockets of vibrant poppies adorned the landscape. While not as spectacular as last year's display, it certainly satisfied our craving for springtime blooms. The rest of the hike was along a trail that ran parallel to the road.

We encountered several police cars with pulled-over vehicles, and a few accidents caused delays. One involved a five-car pileup with a rolled-over Jeep, leaving debris scattered on the road.

Bruce, Dave and I headed down to hike Picacho Peak and see how the wildflowers were doing. Not too busy to start as we got to park right at the trailhead. Nice temps all day although the direct sunlight for the last hour felt warmer than it was to me. I had heard there was some new cable but I didn’t see any on our route. We did our loop clockwise. One guy leaving the summit as we got there so we had our short break to ourselves and left as the next group showed up. Bruce and Dave did the extra summit while I started down. They caught up before we turned onto the Sunset Vista trail. We saw some flowers here and there but not near the turnout of last year. Still some nice one’s and we were glad we did the loop to see them all.
Safety first was achieved and we had a very enjoyable outing! Good to get a hike in with these two! Thanks gents! Like HAZ, you rock!

My volunteer work took me to Tucson today so an afternoon hike was in order. I had not been up Picacho in 8 years so this was long overdue. Pulled in to the trailhead about 345 to get started, I was the last one to attempt a summit for the day. Despite needing a number of small breaks on the uphill, I made good time and actually passed a few folks. There were about a dozen people at the summit so I just took a short break up top and started back down again. Uneventful trip back and made it before sundown. Trail is in great shape, they have put in a few new cable sections that made for more fun. Love this hike.

Hiked Picacho Peak: Hunter trail with Victoria.

We were looking to do a good solid hike this weekend and were going to do Quartz Peak. With Alyssa and Juan tapping out and a late start we decided to do Picacho instead.

I had been a while since we did this one. It was getting warm and the trail was not crowded. Last time we were here there was a massive bee nest right along the side of the trail (near the north overhanging portion). We could see the remains of it but it was (fortunately) not occupied/active this time. It was a good hike, we forgot to bring gloves but the cables weren't too hot so that wasn't a big deal.

A good hike to the summit like usual.

Kelly and I had originally planned a longer hike to take advantage of today’s cooler temps, but I overcommitted myself schedule-wise, so we had to lower our goals for the day. Picacho was a good consolation choice.

Kelly cruised up Hunter Trail while I tried not to die on the ascent. She paused enough for me to catch my breath several times. I’m out of shape. Spots of shade were a relief. Noticed some sections of cables have been replaced with a newer, thinner cable. Not a fan of the new cable, the older, girthier cable was much better to grip in both texture and diameter.

While we saw a handful of people descending just below the summit, we had the summit to ourselves the entire time we were up there. At the saddle just below the summit, we walked out to the west end and were treated to an easy scramble and some nice views, although the air was pretty dusty.

Straightforward hike back down, passed a few more hikers along the way. Fun morning, and good to hike with Kelly again.

linda suggested picacho as a back up plan to a longer hike
i haven't done this hike since 2012 so it sounded just fine
we got going around 0800
cool temps, nice breeze
a lot of elevation gain in a short distance
up to the saddle, then dropping a bit
shade on the west side
a few little scrambles, some assisted by the cables
we saw several hikers coming down from the summit, and ended up having it to ourselves
we checked out the western part of the summit ridge, which i hadn't done before
made our way down without seeing anyone else
it's a fun hike, nice to be up there again
thanks linda, good choice :)

Picacho Peak with friends, only the 2nd time I'd been up there. They wanted an early start, which I appreciated after later encountering the hordes of hikers on their way up. Started from Sunset TH, up to the peak, then down to Hunter TH and back around the north side of the mountain. Was tempted to ask them to just pick me up at the entrance station but bit the bullet and jogged back to Sunset.

Denny through up this as a suggestion. Hoping to score on a flower explosion, I was in.

A 9am start and we started up Hunter. There was sign of many poppies, but it was still too cold for them to be open. Up, up, up, passing a bit of snow on the way to the saddle.

We negotiated the cable sections with little trouble and hit the top with about 10 already up there. After a snack break, we headed back down to the Sunset Vista trail and were lucky to miss any backup on the cable sections.

Once down to the flatter sections the flower show started. Some of the most impressive Coulter Lupine sections I've ever seen. Rock Daisies, Pincushion, Fiddleneck, Scorpionweed, Desert Chicory, Desert Bluebell and Poppies forever.

We made it to the Sunset TH and then continued around back to our starting point.

Being in the area there were 2 more must do's. First, a cherry dipped cone at the DQ. Next, time to cross the Turd off my list. This is an easy 2 mile RT hike, with a better than anticipated summit of the mighty Turd.

I think I set a personal high PPM of 13 on this hike, being in full tibber-mode

Bruce and I went down to see the Poppies and throw in a hike or two. The hike wore me out but the Lupine and Poppies put on a great show!! The trail was in the normal shape but I think I’ll bring the gloves next time. My hands were slipping a little coming down the chute. After the Picacho loop we grabbed a JJ dessert and headed over to Turd hill.
I did the Turd loop while Bruce hit the summit.
Great weather, hike, flowers, views, dessert and company! Thanks Bruce!! Like HAZ, you rock!!
