It's been five years, so about time to revisit Agua Caliente Hill. Tough to drive past at least 5-6 other trailheads in order to get here is the primary reason I rarely come out.

Chilly day to start, spent the first couple of miles in the dark and watched the sunrise come up over the mountains. Nothing much to report. Went up, came down and had the place to myself until about a mile from the summit.

Hike day had a chilly, windy start, with some sprinkles in the car on the way. Clouds were sporadic and most weren't dropping much, but there was some rain visible in the Rincons. I arrived at the trailhead around 10am, and met a couple hikers who were leaving who told me they turned around because of the wind and sprinkles. The precipitation had stopped by now, and while the wind didn't sound fun I hit the trail.

The wind was pretty stiff, especially on ridges and east-facing slopes. It was a headwind, too, so it made the climb extra challenging. It's also possible that the day prior having been Leg Day may have contributed to the challenge.

Cat Track Tank was dry and devoid of any cat tracks that I could see. Plenty of human and bicycle tracks, though.

Didn't see many hikers on the way up (two, perhaps) and had the summit to myself once I got there around 12:30. The wind had settled down a bit by then, but I was thankful I packed my puffy. I signed the log in the shelter of a tree and had lunch. The view would have been better on a less windy day; it was pretty hazy. It was still pretty good, even if it wasn't really possible to see the Santa Ritas, let alone the Pinaleños.

Saw more hikers coming up when I was headed down. Most of them were in the mile or two closest to the trailhead. It was sunny, warm, and just breezy rather than windy.

Back at the car at 3pm, then on to home.

0900 Start time, perfect weather today, not cold and more importantly not windy. The past two days the winds have been awful.

Trail unlike others in the area is in good condition, surprisingly not overgrown and choked with grass and Velcro plants. We only saw a few others on trail today, that's always a treat.

I've wanted to do Agua Caliente Hill for a while now. I finally had a day to do it. It wouldn't be too bad, it's only a hill right?

I got to the trailhead at 9:30 and got going. Today was forecasted to be cloudy and 60 degrees all day, wonderful weather. I got a geocache right after I got going and continued on. The canyon to the north had some cool rocky canyon walls. There was also a slope on the side of a ridge with just dead grass, which was also pretty. I stopped to get another geocache and continued on. There were some big steps that you had to go up. Kind of annoying. I got another geocache along the where the old 4WD road intersected the trail. There was a spider on it. There was a peak on the side of the trail with a trail to the top of it. The peak offered the best views of the hike so far. I took two panoramas, one from the summit, and the other from a couple feet below it, then continued on my way. I got to the next cache when the trail flattened back out. It was a really nice section. There was a lot of rock with a moss like plant on top and Mammillaria tetrancistra growing around it. It took a couple minutes to get to where the cache actually was but when I got to the right spot it was in plain sight. I continued on. I got to a saddle where you got to see the rocky walls on the canyon on the right of the ridge I was on. It was pretty cool. At the saddle there is a little side trail and a rock face which offers the best views of the canyon. Continuing along the trail I went towards the grassy slopes of what lay ahead. There was another rocky peak on the side of the trail. This one was to climb up to and see the views of the Rincon Mountains. Just a short walk from there was my next geocache. It took a minute to find it. It looked like something lived under it. :scared: Loosing elevation brought me to the Cat Track Tank. There was a bit of water in it and a ton of animals tracks around its waters. The trail then started slowly gaining elevation again. I crossed the ridge and then the train descended into the canyon. I did not like what I saw ahead of me. I was going to loose elevation and then steeply gain elevation going up to Forest Road 4445. In the canyon there were two stagnant pools of water with bees buzzing around them. I quickly moved on and the trail quickly steepened. My calves started burning as I pushed up the trail. I moved along and was welcomed by the grassy slopes and oak trees. Views of the Catalina Mountains opened up and it was very pretty. Continuing along I saw some poop on the trail with juniper berries next to a juniper tree, a beetle, and even better scenery. I had planned to hike up to Peak 4765. I got to a good spot on the trail and then started hiking up the steep slope. The ground had a very good grip. I pushed my way through orange dead grass, scratching my legs with the occasional dead regular grass only brushing up against me. I made it to the top of the ridge, just below the summit. The view was amazing up there compared to the rest of the hike I had just done. I took a panorama. Being horrible descending steep slopes, I opted to take the ridge back down to the trail. There was a thin face of bare rock that I had to maneuver across before reaching the more gradual ridge. There was plenty of "Agave schottii" or shin dagger along this route, but less orange dead grass. I got back to the trail, feeling beaten up. The trail started getting steep. The trail became either rock with loose rocks on top of it or silty dirt. It was real steep and I had to slow done at some parts. Calves were burning. I thought this was a hill? A turn in the trail gave hope though. It flattened out. It got windier. I could see all around me and the CLUM benchmark in the dead center of a clearing at the peak. It was pretty windy and combined with the 60 degree temperature my hands immediately got colder. I put my jacket on. I ate a banana. I took pictures of all of the benchmarks. My favorite was reference mark 1 because it has a copper color to it. The other benchmarks were pretty dull and kind of hard to read. I wanted to get moving because I was getting pretty cold. In this rush, I forgot that there was a geocache near the summit. Oh well.

Going down was rough. I moved slow and my legs were giving in. I almost slipped in fell 2 or 3 separate times. Somehow I kept my balance. Once I got down to the small saddle I sat down and had an orange. I took a couple minute break. Thing were a lot better from there on because it was a lot less steep. There were some good views coming down that I had not noticed on the way up. It was pretty easy going on the way out and back to the trailhead. Only harder part was descending into the canyon from the forest road but that wasn't too bad.

This trail was awesome and fun. :) :) :)

This hike had been on my radar screen, so I decided to make it happen on my 3rd hike in Tucson over 3 days.

This is not an easy hike -- as far as I am concerned a 9 mile hike with 3,000 feet of elevation gain should be a mountain instead of a hill!

The trail was a bit overgrown, especially as you got further way from the TH. However, I never had any trouble following the trial.

I enjoyed the hike and thought that the views were nice. If I lived in the area I imagine that I would do this one a time or two each year.

There were hardly any other hikers on the trail, which was surprising given the close proximity to Tucson.

There were a good number of yellow wildflowers along the route, and they got better the higher the elevation.

The tank was about half full, but it was yucky looking. I would not want to filter it.

it has been a pretty long time since i have been up here. a cold stormy morning seemed like a good time to revisit

i did see one person, surprisingly, but that was it. got rained on a few times on the way up and robustly snowed on just shy of the summit. it was cold. overall, i quite enjoyed it.

Nice that my body is still letting me get out during this heat wave. A "cool" 89 degrees at the summit. Saw a whip snake but no rattlers to be heard.

Decided to get out my northwest side bubble and head over to the other side of town. Got to the trailhead bright and early at 5:15 AM and had the place to myself. Used to live in the area over 30 years ago and knew every road like the back of my hand from my cycling days. Felt weird that I needed to stop and look up the directions when I was a few miles away, couldn't remember where to turn off. Thirty years ago I rode my bike on pretty much every paved road in the area and could figure out where stuff was before the advent of smart phones and GPS.

Apparently I was here 6 years ago, but I didn't remember hiking this. Guess I must have been visiting my parents who used to live 10 minutes away and needed a quick place to sneak in a run. Today's visit was to scout out areas that have easy to achieve AEG, signed up for an online vertical challenge at the end of the month. The goal is to get the most AEG in seven days.

Pulled into the parking lot, opened my door and was greeted by the unending drone of bees that never relented the entire hike. By the end I was almost having flashbacks of my killer bee attack because the noise was never stopped. Then further up the trail there were still a bunch of stinging nettles to avoid. Kept getting poked about every 5 minutes. But overall the trail made the short list of places to hike and run for my vertical challenge at the end of the month. Was able to get 3000 feet of gain in 90 minutes on a trail that was pretty clean and not technical.

Did see my first gila monster in over thirty years in the wild today. So that was a cool bonus. Still shocked that I've been running and hiking in one of the most rattlesnake infested parts of the country the past month and haven't seen a single snake. Not even any at my house or around the neighborhood when I'm out walking my dogs.

I made it up to the ACH summit quickly enough. With much of the day still ahead of me, I pulled up my Peakbagger app and noticed Point 5005 in the near skyline. After a couple of minutes of hemming and hawing, I decided to go for it and gingerly made my way downhill through the sea of shin daggers. Pro-tip: the best way to navigate shin daggers is to step right on top of them. It took me about 90 minutes to reach the peak. As expected, I didn't see a soul. But I did find a cellophane balloon (those things are everywhere!) and hear the incessant reverberations of people celebrating freedom (#Murica). Today's famous summit log name was Teresa Gergen--the 13er Queen (yesterday's was John and Alyson Kirk). I retraced my track to get back to the ACH trail, contacting more shin daggers in my fatigue. I contoured around the ACH summit rather than going back up and over--would not recommend as the northwest slopes of ACH are very steep and vegetated.
