A few blooms and no water. Past hikes there was often standing water midway. Not today. Hint of dew after the rain day prior.

You know you’re an Arizonan when you are excited to spend a free day traversing over 8 miles round trip with 2500’ of accumulated gain just to see a creek with actual water in it.

For some reason every time I hike from Agua Caliente south it’s a windy day. It was coming through the canyons from the northeast, cold and stiff. Still an enjoyable climb with nice views of snowy Rincons and Mt Wrightson.

Cat Track Tank was very disappointing. Not only was it dry, there were no cats to pet or play with. I could not entice any to come out with a scrap of paracord, so next time I’ll bring a pouch of salmon treats and see if that helps.

At the saddle the wind was a bit stronger, and stronger still on the ridges descending into Agua Caliente canyon.

At the bottom the creek was flowing nicely and another group was at the crossing enjoying the day. I turned downstream and did the light scramble to see the big pool and waterfall. The wind was quite strong but I managed not to get blown off the edge, and had lunch in a somewhat sheltered spot with a nice view.

After lunch I headed back, with a brief thought of making the hill climb from the saddle. Not today; I’d had a late start and needed to run an errand in the afternoon.

On the final descent to the parking lot I was on the lee side, which was only pleasantly breezy and warm. Despite the wind and lack of cats, it was a pretty good day.

I swore back in 2015 I would never do Agua Caliente Peak ever again, but I must of forgot because Ginny and I did it. Really challenging hike. The trail is easy to follow but it is a steady uphill with the last half mile extremely steep. Slow and steady does it though. Great views all along the trail and the crystal clear sky's made it even better (in the morning at least). We took a short 5 minute break at the saddle before heading up to the peak, 1.5 miles up. The last half mile is probably worse coming down because of the loose rock.

No water along the trail, everything was dry. Only a few other hikers, most just going to the saddle. On our way down we took a break at the saddle again and while we were sitting there two mountain bikers came up from the Agua Caliente Canyon side, fairly good trail in that direction. I ask if they were going to the summit and without stopping they said they were. In my quiet voice I looked at Ginny and said "I don't think so". It's a slow steady walk the last 1.5 miles and I can't picture doing it on a mountain bike without a lot of stopping. Maybe they ditched the bikes and walked the rest of the way up.

No wildlife as such on the trail except for one young Gila Monster sitting in the trail. When we came up it started walking along the trail away from us but was hogging the trail. I ended up getting a yucca branch and tried coercing it off the trail so we could get by and in typical Gila Monster attitude it started biting at the branch, eventually it did move off the trail enough for us to get by. Always a pleasure bumping into these guys.

We have been doing some shorter hikes after a hiking drought for awhile. That was good for helping us get back into shape. This hike has a lot of elevation gain and was an excellent work out. The scenery was beautiful. It got pretty warm in the afternoon. I had point and was startled to see a Gila Monster in the trail. Having never encountered one up close I was not sure what to expect. Mark posted a video we got of it. Mark used a stick to keep it at bay while I gave it a wide berth. It bit at the stick very aggressively. It was on my list of critters I wanted to see. Beautiful colors! We are headed to Texas Roadhouse for a good meal at the end of a wonderful hike with great company.

I kind of bombed up the route this time. Not sure what got into me, since I normally would take it slow and make more pictures. But the weather was perfect, and I just went for it.

Everything was pretty ordinary. I saw a couple wet spots near the cattle tank, but no puddles.

Again, nothing to report other than a delightful walk with blue bird skies.

It's been five years, so about time to revisit Agua Caliente Hill. Tough to drive past at least 5-6 other trailheads in order to get here is the primary reason I rarely come out.

Chilly day to start, spent the first couple of miles in the dark and watched the sunrise come up over the mountains. Nothing much to report. Went up, came down and had the place to myself until about a mile from the summit.

Hike day had a chilly, windy start, with some sprinkles in the car on the way. Clouds were sporadic and most weren't dropping much, but there was some rain visible in the Rincons. I arrived at the trailhead around 10am, and met a couple hikers who were leaving who told me they turned around because of the wind and sprinkles. The precipitation had stopped by now, and while the wind didn't sound fun I hit the trail.

The wind was pretty stiff, especially on ridges and east-facing slopes. It was a headwind, too, so it made the climb extra challenging. It's also possible that the day prior having been Leg Day may have contributed to the challenge.

Cat Track Tank was dry and devoid of any cat tracks that I could see. Plenty of human and bicycle tracks, though.

Didn't see many hikers on the way up (two, perhaps) and had the summit to myself once I got there around 12:30. The wind had settled down a bit by then, but I was thankful I packed my puffy. I signed the log in the shelter of a tree and had lunch. The view would have been better on a less windy day; it was pretty hazy. It was still pretty good, even if it wasn't really possible to see the Santa Ritas, let alone the Pinaleños.

Saw more hikers coming up when I was headed down. Most of them were in the mile or two closest to the trailhead. It was sunny, warm, and just breezy rather than windy.

Back at the car at 3pm, then on to home.

0900 Start time, perfect weather today, not cold and more importantly not windy. The past two days the winds have been awful.

Trail unlike others in the area is in good condition, surprisingly not overgrown and choked with grass and Velcro plants. We only saw a few others on trail today, that's always a treat.

I've wanted to do Agua Caliente Hill for a while now. I finally had a day to do it. It wouldn't be too bad, it's only a hill right?

I got to the trailhead at 9:30 and got going. Today was forecasted to be cloudy and 60 degrees all day, wonderful weather. I got a geocache right after I got going and continued on. The canyon to the north had some cool rocky canyon walls. There was also a slope on the side of a ridge with just dead grass, which was also pretty. I stopped to get another geocache and continued on. There were some big steps that you had to go up. Kind of annoying. I got another geocache along the where the old 4WD road intersected the trail. There was a spider on it. There was a peak on the side of the trail with a trail to the top of it. The peak offered the best views of the hike so far. I took two panoramas, one from the summit, and the other from a couple feet below it, then continued on my way. I got to the next cache when the trail flattened back out. It was a really nice section. There was a lot of rock with a moss like plant on top and Mammillaria tetrancistra growing around it. It took a couple minutes to get to where the cache actually was but when I got to the right spot it was in plain sight. I continued on. I got to a saddle where you got to see the rocky walls on the canyon on the right of the ridge I was on. It was pretty cool. At the saddle there is a little side trail and a rock face which offers the best views of the canyon. Continuing along the trail I went towards the grassy slopes of what lay ahead. There was another rocky peak on the side of the trail. This one was to climb up to and see the views of the Rincon Mountains. Just a short walk from there was my next geocache. It took a minute to find it. It looked like something lived under it. :scared: Loosing elevation brought me to the Cat Track Tank. There was a bit of water in it and a ton of animals tracks around its waters. The trail then started slowly gaining elevation again. I crossed the ridge and then the train descended into the canyon. I did not like what I saw ahead of me. I was going to loose elevation and then steeply gain elevation going up to Forest Road 4445. In the canyon there were two stagnant pools of water with bees buzzing around them. I quickly moved on and the trail quickly steepened. My calves started burning as I pushed up the trail. I moved along and was welcomed by the grassy slopes and oak trees. Views of the Catalina Mountains opened up and it was very pretty. Continuing along I saw some poop on the trail with juniper berries next to a juniper tree, a beetle, and even better scenery. I had planned to hike up to Peak 4765. I got to a good spot on the trail and then started hiking up the steep slope. The ground had a very good grip. I pushed my way through orange dead grass, scratching my legs with the occasional dead regular grass only brushing up against me. I made it to the top of the ridge, just below the summit. The view was amazing up there compared to the rest of the hike I had just done. I took a panorama. Being horrible descending steep slopes, I opted to take the ridge back down to the trail. There was a thin face of bare rock that I had to maneuver across before reaching the more gradual ridge. There was plenty of "Agave schottii" or shin dagger along this route, but less orange dead grass. I got back to the trail, feeling beaten up. The trail started getting steep. The trail became either rock with loose rocks on top of it or silty dirt. It was real steep and I had to slow done at some parts. Calves were burning. I thought this was a hill? A turn in the trail gave hope though. It flattened out. It got windier. I could see all around me and the CLUM benchmark in the dead center of a clearing at the peak. It was pretty windy and combined with the 60 degree temperature my hands immediately got colder. I put my jacket on. I ate a banana. I took pictures of all of the benchmarks. My favorite was reference mark 1 because it has a copper color to it. The other benchmarks were pretty dull and kind of hard to read. I wanted to get moving because I was getting pretty cold. In this rush, I forgot that there was a geocache near the summit. Oh well.

Going down was rough. I moved slow and my legs were giving in. I almost slipped in fell 2 or 3 separate times. Somehow I kept my balance. Once I got down to the small saddle I sat down and had an orange. I took a couple minute break. Thing were a lot better from there on because it was a lot less steep. There were some good views coming down that I had not noticed on the way up. It was pretty easy going on the way out and back to the trailhead. Only harder part was descending into the canyon from the forest road but that wasn't too bad.

This trail was awesome and fun. :) :) :)

This hike had been on my radar screen, so I decided to make it happen on my 3rd hike in Tucson over 3 days.

This is not an easy hike -- as far as I am concerned a 9 mile hike with 3,000 feet of elevation gain should be a mountain instead of a hill!

The trail was a bit overgrown, especially as you got further way from the TH. However, I never had any trouble following the trial.

I enjoyed the hike and thought that the views were nice. If I lived in the area I imagine that I would do this one a time or two each year.

There were hardly any other hikers on the trail, which was surprising given the close proximity to Tucson.

There were a good number of yellow wildflowers along the route, and they got better the higher the elevation.
