Wanted to get in one more snowshoe trip.
Was surprised on the drive up by how much snow has melted up there already.
First chose Turkey Flat.
Though I could make it up in just my boots ... way wrong!
Kept sinking into 2 feet of snow in the shady areas and bailed after only the first 1/4 mile.
Decided to quit messing around and just drive to the backside of the mountain to Snow Flat.
Not much snow on this south side, but Snow Flat road was completely covered as expected.
Made it down to the flat, rested then back up.
Just beautiful down there!
Quick stop at Arcadia on the drive back down.
No snow at all left in the campgrounds.
Hiked down to Wet Canyon to sit and have a hot coffee along the roaring snow melt creek.
It was a good winter on the Big Island this year, I will miss it!
I guess it's time to chase flowers now?

After a visit to the Angle Orchard it was time for a hike. By 11 AM it was way too humid to enjoy hiking from the Orchard to the summit, so I opted instead to hike from Turkey Flat. Still, way too humid to enjoy. I had the experience, and once was plenty. I also hiked to the Ladybug Saddle and met up with Mike and his friend Jacki, and then returned to the summit, and also continued a short distance down the Bear Canyon Trail, but it was just dense moist nearly tropical forest, so I turned back.

Storm cloud views were nice, though.

Note: Stats are for Turkey Flat TH to Lady Bug peak to Lady Bug saddle and back. Sign distances were way off!

Starting around Noon the trail was hotter than I expected. The switchbacks were steep at times and then I noticed after about a mile, there was a big drop and climb again which made this harder than I originally expected. The area immediately below the peak was very nice and shady in some places. It looked like someone tried to build a lean-to nearby. There were some nice views at the peak but it was a small peak and not a lot of space to walk around. I spent more time on the area below the peak because it was so nice. After that I decided to hike down to Ladybug saddle. I was disappointed with Ladybug saddle because it's not really a saddle worth going to - it's simply the trailhead from a road higher up. The mileages listed on the signs must be wrong. The sign said 0.3 miles from Turkey Flat to the Ladybug trail junction. My GPS measured that at 0.7 miles instead. The sign at the trailhead also said that the Ladybug saddle was 1.5 miles away. My GPS measured nearly 3 miles from Turkey Flat to Ladybug saddle.

It started raining about 10 minutes after I passed the trail junction going to the peak on the way down. Then, it rained for about 20 minutes and stopped. It was nice to get to test out my rain gear!

I'm glad I didn't hike this from Angle Orchard as I first planned. It would have been way to hot and way too long! Sad to see that the Angle orchard was sold out within the first 2 hours on Friday and not even open on Saturday.

Plan A, B & C ... sheesh
Plan A up high. Got just a bit up Ladybug when the snow started falling. Not a trail I want to hike in snow.
Plan B Twilight Road just up the road. Got just a bit up this when the heavy snow hit. Now it was just a race to get down the mountain to avoid getting snowed in. Scary ride down as visibility became limited.
Got down into the snow free zone (5000 ft) and chose Plan C the "secret" horse trail. Got down the trail to Jacobson Creek and ran into the FS horses that roam this area. Horses ... on the horse trail 8)
Was hoping for a hike up high, but this lower trail was really nice and scenic with the snowy backdrop.
Quick stop at Roper on the way home for a buddy visit and walk around.
Crazy weather day on Graham.
At Ladybug saddle it was 24deg with 20mph winds = Wind chill factor 9.5deg :pk:

From Turkey Flat up to the T
A little ways up Ladybug Trail, a little ways down.
Overcast with thunder the entire late afternoon.
So many people now always on the mountain ... it sucks!
I'm ready for fall already,

I still had a little time after the Arcadia Trail before heading down into Safford where I will stay the night. I picked a short 1.2 mile round trip hike up to the Ladybug Trail. This .6 mile hike goes from Turkey Flat up 365 feet to the Ladybug Trail that I was on last week. It was nice to be on an actual trail that was easy to follow. There were great views to the north of the area that I just finished hiking. There was a family on the trail that did a car shuttle hike from Ladybug Saddle to Turkey Flat. It would be nice if there was a trail below the ridge connecting the Lady Bug Saddle Trail Head to the Turkey Flat Trail Head, would make a nice loop.

My feet were really sore with a couple of blisters forming. My regular boots are in Seattle Washington being resoled so I'm wearing an old pair of boots and they fit a little loose. I will have to tape up my feet tonight and wear an extra pair of socks and tighten up the laces for tomorrows hikes.

Fall color hunt along the Swift Trail was the main focus for this trip.
Parked at Twilight and hiked up the Swift Trail switchbacks to Ladybug Saddle. Lots of color along the way, but about half of it is on the ground already, I was a little surprised at this early fall.
From Ladybug Saddle I took the trail up to Ladybug Peak. Arrived on top to find that the new ammo box register I placed up there after the Frye fire a few months ago was missing. WTF ..... why do people do this pumpkin?
On the way back down I stewed for a while about the box missing as I took the Ladybug Trail down to Turkey Flat. Ladybug trail was great! I rested for a bit on a rocky overlook for coffee, snickers & the views down before completing the trail down back on to the Swift Trail. A short walk along the road pass the cabins brought me back to Twilight completing the loop.
Except for discovering that my register box was missing, I enjoyed my morning on the mountain. The colors were great, the peak and trails were great and the weather was cold ..... I love the cold!

Swift Trail (366) has been re-opened up to Ladybug Saddle ..... again. Flooding continues to be a problem at Wet Canyon and has closed the road I believe 3 times now since the Frye Fire.

Headed up with the first stop at Wet Canyon crossing. And as pre-warned, ADOT has removed the old 1935 historic CCC bridge. Another historic Pinaleno structure lost forever :pk: ! The flooding at Wet Canyon has been violent and I along with a few others were shocked at the "new" look of the entrance to this most loved canyon/picnic area, but to remove the old bridge was IMO unnecessary & lazy. ADOT does own the road (and old bridge) and because of that can do as they please ..... whatever!

I then drove up to Arcadia CG and hiked down to Upper Wet Canyon. Again as the lower crossing, completely changed forever from the flooding, but in a good cleaned out/opened up way. Before/after pics won't be believed to those who know Wet Canyon. Then it was off to my main hike for the day up to Mount Baldy Peak.

Took Turkey Flat up, hung a right onto the Ladybug Trail, then off-trailed up to the peak. Took in the outstanding views on top, ate lunch & signed the ammo box register before leaving. Beautiful hike back down through the pines on this very scenic trail.

Last stop was on the drive back down to Noon Creek to check things out. This is the lowest burn area on this side of the mountain and all trails here are posted closed indefinitely, the picnic grounds are open.

Wildlife spotted - 6 white-tails, 4 Abert's, skunk, spiny lizards, butterflies and many vocal hawks & vultures up high.

With a little bit of light left in the day, I felt compelled to make a quick detour on my way home from Safford. I made a beeline for the Turkey Flat trailhead, parked, and hit the trail, moving fast. I made it up to the first view of Mount Baldy 8359' on the Ladybug Trail in 15 minutes, as dusk chased away the last rays of sunset. I had a much needed, misty-eyed, one sided conversation with the fire-scarred Pinalenos, and then hiked back to the highway with a heavy heart. My mind recalled many good memories of times in the Pinalenos as I descended the Swift Trail. Good memories will continue to be made in these wonderful mountains.

Clockwise Loop.
Turkey Flat TH up to get it started.
Hung a right onto the Ladybug Trail.
Off-trail side trip up to Mount Baldy Peak, flipped a step boulder and lost some shin skin, but the amazing view down on Turkey Flat was worth it!
Ladybug Peak still holding plenty of ladybugs, long time register box was missing :(
Took the Swift Trail switch-backs down to complete the loop.

Just two weeks ago, I still had considerable difficulty walking on anything other than pavement or excellent, graded dirt road thanks to a viral infection that royally F’ed up my equilibrium back in mid-June. One week ago, I had recovered enough to be able to “hike” on more rugged dirt roads. And this weekend, I wanted nothing more than to have healed enough to safely hike on real trails. Instead, [to my very pleasant surprise given the degree of impairment I’m still dealing with], I took the Pinalenos by storm, bagging 11 peaks in a 48 hour window:

Day 1 – Ladybug Peak

Day 2 – Clark Peak, Blue Jay Peak, & West Peak/L.O.

Day 3 –
Hike 1 – Merrill Peak
Hike 2 – Grand View Peak
Hike 3 – Webb Peak/L.O.
Hike 4 – Grant Hill
Hike 5 – Eagle Rock & Heliograph Peak/L.O.
*”Hike” 6 – Hagens Point
Hike 7 – Twilight Peaks (both of them!)
*I haven’t counted this .25 mile RT “hike” to Hagens Point, [located right by UN 8891], as one of the 11, lol. I saw how close it was on the topo and wanted to check it out but there was really nothing interesting there that I could see, [not even any views]. From the many fire rings in the vicinity, it looked more like a popular spot for camping.

Day 1 – I took the trail to Ladybug Peak from the Turkey Flat TH. It was a bit rockier than I was hoping for my first hike back, but I handled it extremely well, slowing my pace just slightly during the first mile so as not to lose my balance, [yet still clocking in at a respectable sub-23 min for both miles 1 & 2]. According to MapMyHike, I made summit in 2.12 miles and a few seconds over 48 minutes. Luckily, aside from a few nice viewpoints, most of the views en route to the peak were blocked, allowing me to stay focused on pushing the pace. I wasn’t trying to haul pumpkin for the sake of saying I made summit in X amount of minutes; rather, [thanks to a headlamp faux pas in combo with a 6 pm start time], I wanted to make sure I’d be back to the TH, [or at least reach the paved road in the event I opted for a loop over an out and back], before pitch dark.

The summit views were beautiful… and to say there were a poo mess of ladybugs would be an understatement… more accurately stated: it was like total ladybug takeover / infestation… enough ladybugs to make it downright creepy… especially when a few of them started crawling up my shorts…! :o

With my equilibrium still far from 100%, [and not knowing if the free flashlight app I’d downloaded to my phone en route to the Pinalenos that evening would even provide quality light…], I played it safe and opted for a loop route that involved only .5 more miles of trail from the summit of Ladybug Peak before dumping me further up on Rt. 366. But go figure, [despite being nearly pitch dark and the flashlight app proving far inferior to my Black Diamond headlamp], the gazillion and one routes that others have blazed to cut off the switchbacks of the road got the better of me and I had a blast going down several steep, [but super soft] dirt/pines covered slopes. If one thing had recovered in full, it was my ability to handle loose footing, which seemed even better than prior to getting the viral infection. Scaling/stepping over logs was still a challenge… and, [given that my bouldering/climbing ability was still moderately to severely impaired], how I managed to come clean off a 15’ embankment at the bottom of one of the slopes to get back on the road – [in pitch darkness by this point, nonetheless] – was a total miracle. I stayed on the road after that for the remaining .86 miles back to the TH. While I’m not normally a fan of road finishes, the little bit of road that needs to be traversed to complete this hike as a loop makes it totally worth it, given what a total blast the bushwhack is down those steep but soft pine-covered slopes between the segments of road. And there’s not doubt even more bushwacking & less road hiking would’ve been done had it been daylight or had I come equip with a quality light source.

Fueled with excitement at just how well I handled the test hike to Ladybug Peak, I made the rest of the drive up the Swift Trail / Rt. 366 that evening and car-camped just up the road from Riggs Lake. The super trifecta I’d tentatively planned for Day 2 to Clark, Blue Jay, and West Peaks would definitely be a go, and I wanted to be as close to my launch point [Clark Peak TH] as possible.

Bagged a new peak - Ladybug - a new bird - hairy woodpecker - and a geocache purely by accident/instinct ... had the mountain all to myself.
