I met Preston in the early AM and decided to hike in this area but didn't have a plan exactly which trail to take. It's been several years since I hiked these trails. We decided to look for the 'new' trail. When we saw the first sign along the trail it was a bit confusing. I saw Garnet and assumed that was the new trail. We later found out it was simply a rename. Personally, I liked Pontatoc ridge better since it was more descriptive of where it went. We were both a bit confused as to whether the Garnet trail was new or not, but after hiking it we soon realized it was exactly the same as the old Pontatoc ridge trail.

Pontatoc canyon trail was apparently renamed to simply Pontatoc trail. Maybe this was renamed because there were a new project to extend this trail to connect with the Finger rock trail and a good portion of the trail was not in Pontatoc canyon. Either way, it seems that the rename was not necessary. Near the upper section of the Garnet trail, we could see a branch of the Pontatoc trail (formerly Pontatoc Canyon trail) down below which seemed to head over toward the Finger rock trail. The map at the trailhead has not yet been updated so many this trail is still under construction?

We hiked to the end of the trail, which still had the old sign 'End of Pontatoc Ridge trail'. This probably will cause some confusion because it's supposed to now be the Garnet trail.

As for the new extension trail, I would like to go back sometime (not in summer) to hike it.

It started getting brutally hot after about 9 am. On the way down, we saw a California King snake, non-venomous, that didn't seem to care that we were there.

We also saw a maintenance crew out there spraying probably to minimize an invasive species. They need to be given credit for being out there in the intense summit heat. But, they were getting paid to be there, we were not ;-).

Stats:
------
Distance (round trip): 5.03 miles
AEG: 1570 feet
Strava moving time: 2 hrs 23 mins
Strava elapsed time: 3 hrs 20 mins

This was actually another workout hike, looping the Pontatoc with Finger Rock, but I've listed it relative to the Garnett Trail #411 - formerly the "Pontatoc Ridge Trail", and the Pontatoc Trail #410 - formerly the "Pontatoc Canyon Trail", so as to clarify a few things.

First off, quite a few people (already on trail) seem to think that the new section of trail, between the old Pontatoc Canyon and the Finger Rock Trail, is the Garnet Trail. Seems these people do zero research before wandering out into the desert. Garnet is simply the new name of the Pontatoc Ridge trail, with no alteration to the trail itself. Just wanted to clear that one up.

Second, and more importantly, the new and improved Pontatoc Trail has been significantly extended - in fact more than doubling it's prior length, connecting it's northern termination with the Finger Rock, near Linda Vista Saddle. The stats for the Pontatoc Trail are now 4.14 mi. & 2,564 ft. per my most recent track. I'll post a Pontatoc Trail track related to this trip, should anyone care to ogle it for future use.

Had a date to go to the county fair, needed to sneak in a quick one before duty called. Almost perfect conditions, mid-50's & no wind.

Still have obligations that keep me on a short leash time wise on the weekends. Just needed another short hike that packs in as much as possible. Loaded up my pack with some extra weight and did a quick out and back to the sign at the end of the trail with a couple of tiny detours along the way for photo ops.

This would have been a perfect day to summit Kimball. But instead I simply had to gaze at it from afar.

Lots of cars at an overflowing trailhead this afternoon when I arrived. A group of buffelgrass removal folks were heading out as I headed in. A bit warm I thought (70s) for a winter’s day, so I soaked my shirt in the creek for the hike up. Not that many people out on the Pontatoc trails, I guess everyone was on Finger Rock Trail. I trudged up the ever-steepening route and finally reached the summit about 4pm. Made a side trip to the old mines at the base of the cliffs of insanity on the way down, and walked to the end of the main tunnel. Made it down at sunset. Weird foot nerve issue seems to be on the mend finally.
