This hike was a good half-day diversion for my 13 year-old grandson who likes to explore off-trail in rugged terrain that can be a challenge for his Granddad but not so much for his Dad who came with us. The starting point on FR237 is a short drive from Katrina Village where we were staying in a VRBO house with the rest of the family. We chose the 14 mile driving route that goes towards Flagstaff on HW-17 then loops south down HW-89A to FR237 for one mile of dirt road to our chosen parking spot. We were surprised to discover a large village of dispersed campers along a half-mile of this road. On the return we drove the shorter 5.6 mile route back to Kachina Village on FR237. That road had some rough spots but nothing our 2-wheel drive RAV4 (my wife's car) couldn't handle with ease.

We started the hike by walking down the hillside from FR237 to Pumphouse Wash at its scenic confluence with Kelly Canyon, then north a quarter mile up the Wash to checkout a cave. My Grandson was eager to explore the cave. However, I was surprised to find out my son-in-law has a claustrophobic fear of caves and he quickly retreated to the dry creek bed to wait for us. It's a small, short cave so there wasn't much exploring involved but still a worthwhile point of interest for my Grandson.

After leaving the cave we hiked about 1.6 miles down PH Wash to a high waterfall which blocks easy access to the canyon below and was our chosen turn-around location. This short hike down canyon to the falls turned out to be somewhat of a challenge for me with about a mile of clambering over a boulder strewn dry creek bed in the hot mid-morning sun to reach the 14 to 20 foot-high (dry) falls. There are some scenic rock formations carved out by the stream along the way and the falls is a worthy scenic destination. I was desperate to find an easier way back to the car so consulted the topo map on my Garmin GPS. It has an old map which luckily shows old, abandoned logging roads and there was one leading out of the bottom of the canyon not far upstream from the falls taking us back to FR237 and our car on a gentle slope. If you want a quick and easy access to, or from, the falls I recommend using that part of our route.

we made a nice loop hike right from the front door of where we stayed just outside of flagstaff. from what i could see, we used the Kelly Pocket trail, kelly Canyon, FSR 237, some use trails and Upper Pumphouse Wash. Beautiful day in the woods on some new, and surprisingly pleasant, trails. The highlight was where kelly canyon and pumphouse meet. nice big flowing creek!

Met up with Janelle after skiing for a quick trip into the woods near town. Sophie enjoyed the walk, and I was happy to discover a new part of the world. There's nice water and spring is starting to green up the forest.

We made a quick stop off the 89A to checkout Upper Pumphouse. There is still water flowing from Spring runoff.
The Coconino sandstone is on full display in this section of the canyon. We walked up Kelly Canyon for a short distance, which I found much less interesting than Pumphouse. I suppose I should give it a real chance some day though.

Upper Pumphouse makes for a nice spot to stop and relax when there is surface water flowing.

After doing a pretty hard trip the day before Joel and I decided to do an "easy" trip. Then normal start for this adventure is from the I-17 side but I wanted to save time so I figured out a spot that looked like we could easily drop into Pumphouse Wash. We essentially did the hike in reverse by doing all the non-technical parts first. I personally think this is a good idea since why would you want to carry wet stuff a long way?

Kelly is a pretty canyon with a trail running along it. That made travel pretty quick. We made a mistake that we had been warned about and nearly continued up the wrong arm of Kelly.

James is an awesome canyon. Technically it is not hard. The longest rappel is 40 feet. It has a few down climbs and cold swims. We even found that there was a sport climbing area before the long swim.

Overall this is an easy canyon, but the mileage of rock hopping can wear you out. So I started to look for routes out of the canyon when we hit Pumphouse Wash. I did find one the exited pretty early. If I were to do it again, I'd stay in until the old road crosses the wash and use that as the exit back to the car.

Fun times!

I wore my 2mm shorty. Mistake! We were late enough so the sun was behind the canyon walls after the cold swims.

Super-Duper-Bouldery. Bring some comfy shoes and be prepared for extensive rock hopping. Also, bug spray comes in handy. Parts of this hike that are a bit bush wacky with thorny plants so long pants may be wise. Actually LL recommended zip off pants because there was one area that required walking though water.

~ Eric, Bob, LL and I made pretty good from the start to the waterfall area. When we got to the waterfall we ended up spending a little more time there than planned because Eric had managed to sit on a cactus so I had to help him pull some tiny cactus spines from his bum. Bob and LL politely waited further up on the trail. The day was super humid, but otherwise the weather was perfect for this hike. I really enjoyed all the different rock features, especially the slot canyon. :) We saw lots of pools full of tadpoles and a few cute little frogs hopped by us on the boulders.

Added a bit extra to this trip exploring further down the wash. Saw more fall colors following the wash to the south before heading back and hitting the actual trail in the description. Very interesting area as far as the rock formations at the beginning, and the small cave area. We found an owl hanging out in said cave, and he was nice enough to sit pretty while we snapped as many pics as we can get. It looked like we were about a day late on some of the fall colors, but south in fry canyon was very nice. All and all a great area to explore and I'll be back. Headed up to weatherford loop afterwards for a few more miles on the day. Another beautiful area as well, although we missed out on the aspens there. All the leaves were already down. Had lunch in a nice sunny spot, enjoyed the nice crisp thin air, and soaked it all in... Another perfect day in AZ.

Pleasant little canyon, decent water conditions, cool and fairly clean. Dropped the technical gear at the end of James and continued on down lower Pumphouse to Oak Creek and back, great sandstone scenery in that stretch. Exited via Kelly, also very pleasant. The mountain bike trail in there is so nice I just kept hiking along it without realizing that at some point it had branched off up a side canyon, ended up too far north. Still not sure where the split was.

Such a great canyoneering & creek hiking loop! :D James Canyon was as much fun as ever with a few sweet narrow sections that require some short down climbing, chilly swimmers, and short rappels with easier sections of rock hopping, wading, and bushwhacking in between. My favorite rappel is that 40-footer which is also a great place to warm up and grab some lunch. The water was chilly but not unbearable though that last long narrow swimmer was mighty cold! :o We dropped our gear here since last Fall there were no more swimmers afterwards. Though this spring we ran across a few knee waders and one interesting log jam swimmer that had us log balancing & straddling in our attempt to stay dry. I was pushing the log along like one of those canal boats in Venice and I was almost to the other side when I grabbed the wall for support and the log slide away and rolled me off. The water wasn't too bad though, only my pants got wet since I stuff my shirts in my dry keg, while Kelli was skilled enough to stay on and I held the log while she straddled it back to dry land. : app : James canyon always seems to take forever and I was afraid we'd be hiking out near sunset, but we finally hit Pumphouse Wash and the rock hop upstream to Kelly Canyon went by fairly quickly. Those falls had been dry the previous times I've seen it, so it was cool to finally see it flowing with a huge swimming hole under it. After James & Pumphouse, the trail along Kelly Canyon was a welcome relief up that scenic little canyon and I lucked out and was able to find the same place I climbed to the rim last time and road walked back to the car with plenty of daylight to spare. :D

This ones been on my list for some time as well... I was looking for an 'easy' canyon to get some canyoneering experience and this fit the bill perfectly. :D The water was a little chilly, but wasn't too bad with a shorty 3mm. ;) The first set of obstacles is a rather fun experience thru some swimmers/waders and a few short rappels thru the narrows. Further downstream is the 40 footer that isn't too bad but I wasn't enjoying the angled start over the lip but after that it's a straight forward rappel. :) James is not terribly scenic and the boulder hopping down James and up Pumphouse Wash can get quite taxing. It's been awhile since I've done Pumphouse, so when I got to it I dropped my pack and hiked the half mile or so to that dirty swimmer before turning back. That trail in Kelly canyon was quite nice after all the boulder hopping and I actually found that canyon to be a pleasant scenic stroll before climbing briefly up to the rim and road walk back to my car. :D

We did a loop back through Kelly Canyon via Pumphouse Wash. It seems like the best option IMO. Be sure to go early as the unshaded exposure in Pumphouse gets HOT!

Did my first, albeit short, rappel on the 12 footer. A little ~four foot hop and skip across the wall followed by a smooth drop. I enjoyed it thoroughly! Of course I had the help of Jeff and Janelle talking me through it ;)

I tried but couldn't hack the 40 footer. The bypass I found was pretty good but I don't think it's doable in reverse.

The water in the long narrows was friggen cold as ice  Passed and startled two rattlesnakes under a rock. In switching directions I lost my balance. My hand landed six inches away from the rattling duo without incident.

It's good to put this one in the done column after almost a decade of anticipation. Fun day, thanks to Jeff & Janelle for their help! :)

Yet another beautiful Arizona morning! My left knee was still pretty sore from Humphrey's on Monday, so I had to slowly pick my way amongst the river rocks that I would normally have hopped quickly between. I think I enjoyed the top section more than the bottom toward the 14 foot cliff. The top is all Coconino Sandstone, which makes for a great slickrock playground and sweet sidewalls. When the canyon hits the basalt flow, it just doesn't quite pack such a punch. It was still gorgeous down that way, but I think my knee was making me grumpy, and I lashed out at the sea of gray rocks around me  . I really enjoyed all the pools and puddles up in the Coconino as well. Many had frogs, fish and even tadpoles. Oh yeah, I saw a rattler...well, I heard him as a stepped over the crack he was hiding in, caught a glimpse, and moved on as quickly as possible!

Well, I've hiked lower Pumphouse Wash on two occasions so far and both times I've made it up just a tad short of James Canyon due to the canyons only mandatory swimmer. Normally I'd just swim it and keep it going, but after managing to stay dry thus far I just wasn't able to convince myself to jump into the murky waters. So this trip I dropped into upper Pumphouse Wash from FR237 and hiked down past the dry falls & James Canyon all the way to the same mandatory swimming hole, but this time I was looking at it from upstream. :) This turned out to be a sweet little canyon and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. If I had to choose between lower or upper, I'd usually choose lower, but it's nice to see another side of the canyon for a change. After hiking back up, I continued further up a bit to Kelly Canyon and checked that out for a bit before hiking back to the car. If the mileage seems a tad high, its because I parked my low clearance ride at the beginning of FR237 and hiked it in.

On a side note, that FR237 is fairly popular with campers and noisy ATVers and I could also hear shooting in the distance. :?
