Hiked Cathedral Wash with Victoria on our return from Zion National Park.

To be fair we did not complete the wash but only managed ~3/4 of it as we were running out of time and wanted to get back to town at a reasonable hour (we were only looking for a quick roadside stop and this was a bit more than that).

The trail starts at the road (or rather goes under it) and follows the watercourse as it cuts a path to the Colorado river. The canyon gets fairly narrow (not quite to slot canyon proportions) but is pretty regardless.

The first half of the route is not technical and straightforward but it eventually becomes a bit more complicated. The 2nd half is more ore less constant scrambling or shimmying along the canyon walls to avoid the pools (if full from recent rainfall as was the case for us). There was generally rock cairns (or rather steps to indicate where you should go but in many places there were enough footsteps on either side of the canyon to make it appear that multiple options were available (which I suppose they are depending on your appetite for risk).

The scramble difficulty and height of possible falls was not high enough that a rope was needed, but high enough that approach/climbing shoes and a helmet (which we didn't have) would have been nice.

The canyon was very pretty and I will have to return some time when I have more time to finish the route.

It looks like there are many more technical canyoneering routes in the area that are worth exploring as well.

I met a friend from Flagstaff for another hike on my return from Kanab. We headed down Cathedral Wash and I was pleasantly surprised to encounter some obstacles that required scrambling and ledge-y bypasses. It's clear hikers have found multiple ways through here, but the easiest way is not immediately obvious. This is always so much more interesting than a walk down a wash.

After a lunch break at the river, we continued upstream along the talus, sandbanks, and limestone ledges to the beach below Paria. We were able to avoid the brush. Unlike Cathedral Wash, I saw no human tracks here. We ascended the ravine where the "secret beach" trail comes down and followed the old terrace back to Lees Ferry. It was sunny and near 60 degrees - a welcome change from my earlier backpack!

Day 1 - The long ride up to Lee's Ferry with a stop at Navajo Bridge. The wind was brutal but died down during the night.
Day 2 - Backhaul up the river to Glen Canyon Dam and a full day kayaking down with stops at the petroglyphs and on Horseshoe Bend. With the wind picking up again the next day we were advised not to camp on the river.
Day 3 - Breakfast at the Cliff Dwellers Lodge, Cathedral Wash to the Colorado River and back, the drive around to Horseshoe Bend from above
Day 4 - The long drive home and the dread of going back to work the next day...

A repeat hike from the day before, with some different youth From our group camping on lone rock beach at Lake Powell. Ran into a scout troop at the river, as well as a couple of rangers. Water was cold and refreshing. This is a great little hike, with a little scrambling and decision making on routes, and a lot of beautiful geology.

Nice morning to explore the wash. Getting toasty, but not too bad. Just a handful of people on the trail. Took a jump in the river to cool off before returning. Hit up Navajo Bridge and Horseshoe Bend on the return to our camping spot on Lone Rock Beach.

John pretty much covered it. Fun short hike down to the river and back near Lee's Ferry. It's popular but we managed to beat most of the groups to the river and cleared out before they arrived. Nice warm up hike for rest of the weekend!

Karl and I were heading to the north rim for a couple of day hikes and decided to hit this one on the drive up. We left Phoenix around 5am & were on trail a few minutes after 10am. The going is easy as you follow an open wash. We headed down and the canyon tightens up and the fun begins. It’s a mix of scrambling & traversing and figuring out the safest route. We really enjoyed this section and saw a park ranger about halfway down. We had a nice conversation. He’s been stationed at Lee’s Ferry about a month and gets down here regularly. It was nice seeing the park service represented.

We cruised the rest of the way with one minor mishap. I stepped into a deep mud pit! We had a good laugh and I was glad we’re heading for the river. Once there I thoroughly washed my shoes & socks. After that we relaxed and enjoyed the river. After our fill we packed up and headed back. We took our time on the hike in but this time we cruised & that was a good thing. There were several medium size groups heading in. We were glad for the early start. We got back to the 4Runner around noon and then continued on our way to the Kaibab Plateau for the rest of our trip. We were off to a good start.

Last stop of our AZ/UT road trip was Cathedral wash. My friend Kara had recently done this hike and loved it so I was excited for this one! We drove there from UT & arrived pretty late in the day. It was hovering around 90 degrees when we started and the hike felt really hot.

The beginning of the hike is a bit underwhelming but don’t give up because soon it opens up and is really beautiful! There are a few obstacles to work around that were pretty easy to navigate. Some groups seemed to be having a hard time figuring out the route around the 30 ft {dry} waterfall but we bypassed on the right with no issues. There were cairns in the places where you should cross the wash and every bypass is easy (and fun!) to figure out.

We made it to the river and took a long break to enjoy the views, eat snacks and for me to cool down in the shade. We saw a group of people studying the cliff walls a little bit further down the river, and James grew very curious. It looked like they’d maybe found some petroglyphs because they were taking lots of up close photos. As James grew more curious, it started rubbing off on me so we went over there to check it out. It was a hot bushwhack with boulders to climb over and once we got close they let us know they were out there working/ site surveying, not hunting petroglyphs, oooops.

We still had to drive back to Scottsdale so we opted to head back and finished just before sunset. The hike is easy and fun but the heat was a bit rough for me given the canyon walls hold so much heat! If I did this hike again I’d probably wait until it was a bit cooler, but definitely enjoyed this one!

Loved this hike! I had to force my hiking companion to keep going when we hit the 30 ft drop, but the HikeAZ entry helped up follow the right route. It was really cool to hike down to the Colorado!

This was an amazing hike. Started early in the morning to beat the heat and was glad we did. There were some tricky spots that we had to maneuver so we didn't have to step in deep mud but the kids loved the climbing. Follow the little stacks of rocks and you should be golden. The Colorado River was fun to play in when we got to the end. Make sure you bring enough water because it's hot!

The destination for the day was the Kaibab Camper Village, after setting up a "meet-you-halfway" camping trip with three the three of our children (and two grandkids! :y: ) who live in Provo, UT. No one else would be getting to the campground until late afternoon, so on the way, my son and I took a slight detour to check out Cathedral Wash on the road to Lee's Ferry.

I had seen this hike when we overnighted at Lee's Ferry in advance of our Wire Pass-Lee's Ferry backpack of the Paria River a couple years back. We didn't have time to do it then, but today provided the perfect opportunity to check this one out.

Arrived around noon. It was hot, but the hike is relatively short and a dunk in the freezing cold waters of the Colorado awaited us at the halfway point on this out and back.

The trail starts from a pullout just along the main road and immediately you cross under the road via a huge culvert the separates "upper" and "lower" Cathedral Wash. There is also the option of hiking the upper portion, but who wants to do that when the Colorado River awaits on the lower end? :D

There were a couple of other cars at the TH, and we passed their occupants on the trail, but in general, traffic was very light. Probably busier in the cooler seasons.

The trail starts in a relatively broad wash with the Vermillion Cliffs towering over your shoulder, but within the first 1/2 mile the walls narrow a bit and the wash deepens. Lots of very cool effects of erosion to be seen along the way. The wash doesn't ever slot up or become technical, but there are a variety of downclimbs and bypasses to take advantage of. The biggest is a 30-ft pouroff about 1 mile in (just as you cross under the powerlines). The bypass is to the right. Nothing tricky, but there are a few places where you have to use your hands. I suppose navigation may be a bit more interesting when there is water flowing. On this trip, there were several muddy pools, but that's about it.

Near the end, the wash opens up again just before the confluence with the Colorado, which is marked by some rapids (maybe more of a "riffle," but I'm not a river guru), which we heard before we saw.

The river was beautifully smooth above the rapids. Saw a crane hanging out at the edge of the rapids. Spent too much time taking pictures, then took an obligatory dip in the river. There is a good spot for that just below the rapids, where the river fills in a little cove along the western bank.

Didn't see anyone at the river until just as we were leaving on our return trip.

The hike out provided fun views from the opposite perspective and with slightly more forgiving lighting.

Definitely worth a side trip if you have a couple of hours in the area.

FYI: $30 Glen Canyon Rec area pass is required and can be purchased from a vending machine (credit card) off the right side of the road as you drive in from 89A. I was originally bummed that I had to do the hike before our planned trip into the GC the next day when I planned to purchase an annual America the Beautiful Pass. But, as I found out the next day, the GCNP gave me credit for the $30 pass towards my America the Beautiful pass. Yay! :y:

I happen across this trail in a pamphlet at the visitor center by the Navajo Bride. Thanks to the Hazer triplogs and write up. Good info on what to watch for. I was gonna be in the area and was worried about the heat for anything longer. I started the hike as soon as I could see good enough to watch for snakes. It was about a mile from the parking spot to the 30ft. dry fall. As The write up says if you go right there is a good route. There was a couple down climbs later that I found a tad harder then that on my way back out. My short legs had me relying on some superb hand holds. It was a cool area. Hearing then seeing the Colorado River and the rapids were nice too. With an early start the Sun didn't hit me until the 30ft. dry fall on the way out. :y:

Hiked the first mile of the wash toward the river. Great rock features, but I came to a 70 foot pour off which would have required a lot of traversing up and down through rock ledges. I'm sure the rest of the hike is fantastic, but I wasn't in the mood for extended scrambling, so I headed back the other direction on the trail. (It's sort of hard to find anything that matches Buckskin Gulch anyway!)

Heading north and west in the wash was very interesting. I covered only about the first half mile and want to go back and find out where it ends in the mountains. Hope to do that and report back soon.

Since we had someone along who wasn't a canyoneer so I came up with an idea that would still be cool for all and include her. We put our packrafts in before the Paria Riffle. The Paria was silty as it ran into the Colorado and it mixed in changing the color from the green the day before.

We all floated through the riffle - even John who was in an Explorer 200 with crappy paddles (he lent his Alpaca to his GF for the day). As I started through the riffle, my out pumpkin meter when off. I kept myself calm by just reminding myself over and over to keep paddling. Maybe someday I'll be able to work myself up to running a GC rapid in my raft!

As we floated we played with our water guns, splashing each other to keep cool. The breeze on the river was mostly pleasant! Soon, the sound of Cathedral Wash was heard. We were all sad that we had to get out. John, Airkewl, and Kim ran Cathedral Wash Rapids in their alpacas while the rest of us watched.

The hike up Cathedral was amazing!!! We did some scrambling to get up on ledges to work around pools of red sandstone mixed with water. The day was hot as it was noon as we were hiking. However, we were often in the shade so it was a pleasant hike.

Float: 2.34 miles
Hike: 2 miles and 760 feet AEG

This would have been a better and easier hike if Lees ferry hadn't been hit with a 10 minute or so thunderstorm the night before. As it was the canyon was pretty wet after the first half mile, including one point where there was little alternative to wading through waist-deep agua colorada. The deep puddles and mud eventually got more unpleasant and forced us into more scrambling than we counted on doing. After a while we turned around, so for the second time of the day didn't manage to make the river via a canyon. Oh well, so we ultimately drove down to Paria riffle to clean all the red mud stains off of us.
