Three dads took our three fifth graders on a 21 mile horse ride from First Water TH to Charlebois (and the petroglyphs!) by taking Lost Dutchman to Bull Pass to Lost Dutchman and then returning on the Lost Dutchman until we added a side trip over Black Mesa to Hackberry Spring - making a long figure 8 route through the best of the Superstitions.

The trip was awesome and we were all excited to see so much rugged terrain. 21 miles and 8 hours in the saddle is a long day for a 10-year old, but the kids were in good spirits all day.

I did this section of the AZ trail with my 6 year-old daughter and 60+ dad. We started at the new trailhead on the Florence-Kelvin hiway and finished at the new trailhead on Freeman Rd. The views were great for the first 1/3 of the trail, and then the trail gets a lot easier/faster, but the views were not as outstanding. At the top of the ridge before the switchbacks descend to Ripsey Wash, it was incredibly windy.

We kept a pretty good pace to finish this segment in less than 8 hrs, including a lunch break. There was no water for the horses along the way. They were in good condition, but a little dehydrated at the end. They didn't hesitate to drink their fill fill from the trough at the trailer.

We lost one horse shoe along the way, so I put on an easy boot. It worked well for about 10 miles before it came off. I didn't back track looking for it, so someone will soon find a new easy boot a few miles from Freeman Rd.

My wife & I took our 7 year old daughter on her first pack trip. We brought 2 horses - one with a pack saddle for the gear, and one with a riding saddle. The two beautiful girls took turns hiking & riding on the way to the ranch Friday afternoon. While we were eating dinner in the dark Friday night at the ranch, I shined my flashlight across the meadow, and there were several sets of eyes sparkling within 30-40 yards. The white tail deer are very comfortable with campers, because there were 2 doe bedded down about 15 yards from our tent in the morning.

I was glad that it was dark Friday night when we walked in or my wife would have seen the huge piles of bear scat everywhere and been freaked out all night. It was a fun, quick trip. The girls picked apples Saturday morning while I loaded the horses, and we left camp at about 9 am. We made it back to the trailhead by 12:30, and it was pleasant and breezy the whole way.

The best part (besides having my wife join me for a trip) was seeing the 7 year old with all her front teeth missing eat apples with her molars.

Some apples were ripe, but most need another couple of weeks to be at their best.

The mileage is longer because we started at the Y in the road where FR 172 splits to go to either Woodbury TH or Rogers Trough TH. I parked way down there because I was hiking with 2 people on horseback: my dad & my son. How else can you do a day trip to Reavis with a six year old & a sixty year old?

The hike was beautiful & my son did awesome on his first big adventure. His only complaint of the day was about all the catclaw on the trail. We had lunch by the old cattle loading chute in the shade of the walnut tree. There were walnuts all over the ground, but none on the tree.

The apple crop was decent. A few trees had great years and were loaded with ripe apples, but most were completely barren. We picked some apples to bring back for the rest of the family. When we got home, we decided to make apple pie (see pics). It was a fun trip, but we regretted parking so far away. I think that the best place to park a horse trailer on that road is on the left side of the road, just past the first cattle guard after the junction to Woodbury TH. I don't like to pull a trailer all the way to the TH because of the hairpin turn & how steep that last mile is.

I started at the Icehouse CCC trailhead and took the sixshooter canyon up to the peak - past Ferndell spring and then took Squaw Springs Trail #196 down to Pioneer Pass TH and then FR 112 down to Pioneer Pass campground. We spent the night at the campground where there are hitching posts.

There were several sections of trail blocked by downed trees, so only go with an experienced trail horse and a breastcollar is a must because of the constant climb. Beautiful views and great scenery - and so much of the ride is in the shade.

I took my little girl out for a horseback ride on her 2nd birthday. Since it's July, we met my dad at the trailhead at 5:00 am. We did the loop and stopped at the spring, where just a trickle of water was coming out of the pipe. We took the steep trail out of the canyon and returned quickly to the horse trailer parking lot. It was nice to be out so early and enjoy the sunrise and summer hiking in the superstitions without getting heat stroke.

We got started before sunrise and left from the horse trailer parking area and followed the trail alongside the road to the trailhead. When we started, there were no cars in the parking lot. We didn't see anyone on the trail until we were coming back and about 3 miles from the trailhead on the lost dutchman's trail. From this point on, we passed about 50 people going in the opposite direction. When we passed through the parking lot on the way out, there were about 40 cars.

It was great to get out early and see the sunrise filling all the canyons and peaks back in the wilderness area. It is a great rugged hike where you see a lot of diverse terrain. We went so fast, we didn't take time to stop & smell the roses. 10.1 miles in just over 2 hours - that's booking it, especially considering the rough terrain.

I started this hike from the gravel pits just off of the Apache Trail - at the bottom of the road that leads to the trailhead. This added an additional 6 steep miles to the trip. We left camp at 7 am and arrived at Reavis Ranch at 10:20 am. We had lunch and looked around for a few hours before we started back out. We saw some big bear prints in the trail and a small mule deer. It was a quick trip since we got a late start and still got back to the cars by 3:30, but that's all the time we had. It is more relaxing to stay the night and enjoy the lush valley a little more.

Our pace was pretty quick. We were all tired by the time we finished.
