Incase anyone is planning on doing this loop in the near future...Snow pack begins on Abineau about 1.5 miles in to Waterline where you'll encounter some large patches every so often to Bear Jaw turn off.

The loop is passable but a little hairy on Abineau not so much because of the snow but many trees have fallen this winter blocking the trail - similar to what it looked like after the avalanche a few years ago.

I got by with just hiking shoes. But if you descend Abineau expect slippery conditions - snowshoes and/or trekking poles may come in handy!

Crazy day on the Peaks!

Had to turn around about a half mile from the summit.

Huge storm cell w/ heavy rain & hail. It's no wonder I wasn't hit by lighting! :doh: (I guess it's not my time to go!)

Didn't see a soul the whole day which is oddly common for this route(don't know why??)

Thanks to Joe for making this an actual hike selection on HAZ. (and a great write up btw!)
Hiking to the summit via the Inner Basin/Weatherford trails has a whole different feel to it then starting from Snow Bowl parking lot. I know Lockett Meadow isn't as convenient and easy to get to but if you have the extra time, try this way up sometime...it's a Five Star!

After hiking in Sedona - and especially after doing this one - I always ask myself - why don't I explore Sedona more often? Hummm - lets see...Traffic, Mass Tourism, Jeep/Air Tours and "User Fees".

The parking area unfortunately was increased by 1000% and is now located on the south side (on the left) of 152c and shares it with Doe Mountain TH. To access Bear Mountain though, it requires one to cross 152c. Hopefully most tourist won't make the extra effort and simply hike the closer trail - Doe Mountain. Thankfully all indications Saturday seemed to prove this.

Bear Mountain and the surrounding terrain is still paradise (for now) - Not a Resort/Golf course in sight, no Jeep Tours, No t-shirt sales (i.e. Wilson Mt. S.) and just the occasional Air Tours.

Time includes about an hour of exploring.

Left the brown smog of Phoenix to b r e a t h e - and to take advantage of the nice weather in Flag.
Temps were above normal and surprised there weren't any other cars parked at the trailhead. It was around 40 degrees at the parking lot (9200'). At the summit temps were in the mid to upper 20's but sunny blue skies and minimal wind made it feel warmer then it was. Even chilled at the top for about an hour. Half the trail was dry - but in other spots there were large areas of ice and snow pack, but passable. Hiked just wearing my low-cut Merrells.

It is probably wrong that one can do this summit hike so close to mid-December. A winter storm system approaching Sunday hopefully will dump on The Peaks!!

Reached Humphreys Summit (12633') via Inner Basin and Weatherford Trails. Aspens are all past peak and dropping at Lockett Meadow and along the Inner Basin. Snow cover (1 - 3" in parts) began around 10200' on the Weatherford. Temps remained around freezing. Decided last minute to take the Humphreys Summit Trail down to Snow Bowl where aspens are golden but peaking. No snow just a little muddy on the Humphreys Summit Trail.

w/ brother john. gave a resort surveillance camera aimed on the trail :? the good ole one finger salute! :wink: once you're pass the polluting resort - the trail becomes quite enjoyable.

Nice overcast day with a little drizzle. Great to see all the new under growth in the burn areas! Reports of a mother bear and her cubs kept me on guard - had my digi ready just in case :wink:

Wendy at the fire lookout had 5 active lighting caused fires going on at once! Time does not include the hour chillin with her.

It really really really sucks - no moisture for over 77 days :cry: (a record in Flag) this time last year we had over 150"+ of sweet lookin fluffy powder on the peaks.

Hopefully things will pick up so we can at least enjoy a dank spring/summer in our beautiful green forest.

Drove all the way to Fountain Hills from Ahwatukee to climb Thompson Peak only to discover a luxury home development has taken over the TH and surrounding area at the end of Golden Eagle. Way bummed out :cry: So headed towards Pinnacle Peak to do my first hike in Scottsdale. Impressive facilities - but not much of a challenge unless you run it. Probably will never do it again - unless i'm in the neighborhood. All you need for this one are running/trail shoes.

First time. Nice and damp from the rains yesterday.

The trail is a lot like Echo Canyon, with a little Cholla (the part near the end) and a dash of Squaw Peak. For sure you need good shoes with good tread. However, if you have mastered the trails forementioned, you shouldn't have any problems with this one.

Hiked to the top of Humphreys Peak from Lockett Meadow via the Inner Basin and Weatherford trails.

Very windy at the summit, but the sun and clear skies kept things nice.

Now is the time to hit the Inner Basin. Things are golden but are past peak.

Good job by the forest service clearing the trail.

Colors are a little ways off. Everything should be golden in around 10 days.

This hike is much like Elden L.O. in Flag or Echo Canyon in Phoenix - a quick cardio workout. Not really much of a scenic journey - but a few good view points no less. (the fire L.O. views however are awesome) About 90% of the time you're in the sun - a welcoming sensation i'm sure in the winter. Appears that parking could be a BIG problem during season.
