What? No one has posted pics of the comet? I wandered around Harquahala foothills for dark skies and light pollution free views a few weeks ago. Since it's doubtful any of us will be around in 80K years if/when it returns I hope you enjoy a few of the images I collected.

Quick jaunt up to the top with a plan to shoot the Milky Way. Once darkness came on it was evident many hot spots and flareups were still occurring along a distant ridge line northeast of Canyon Lake.

Another visit to Whitewater to check out the cranes and other critters. The colder temps over the Holidays pushed a wide variety of waterfowl down south. Estimated crane population for the weekend was 8,000, but who really knows...

Intense colors in some areas yet sparse in others. Bright red maples right next door to still green maples, the trees seem confused. Wasn't as lucky as Joe and Bruce to see any bear but ran into so many elk I couldn't count them. Always fun to go deep in the forest and hear them bugling. Should be good this weekend into next.

Great north Georgia hike in the Chattahoochee Forest through vibrant and moss covered woodlands. The trail parallels Dodd Creek and ultimately reaches Raven Cliff Falls, a 40 foot waterfall that tumbles down through a massive crack in the cliff face. Along the way there are several picturesque waterfalls and deep pools. During this hike the water flow was strong due to heavy rainfall in the weeks prior.

Made the trek down to see the migration and even though the playa was spread out much more than in previous years, there were strong numbers of snow geese, all varieties of puddle and diving ducks, and of course sandhill cranes. The tally of cranes on one of the websites that keep track numbered over 10,000. I also ventured into the southern part of the refuge, past the owl habitat and away from the water, to spend a few hours watching coyotes, javelina, hawks, and harriers.

Up in the PNW for another work trip and managed to sneak in a few hikes along the Columbia River Gorge on the Oregon side. I wanted to get to the bottom of Elowah Falls but the trail is currently closed due to the trail being washed out and impassable. Not to worry, there's an abundance of trails and waterfalls to see all along the historic Highway 30. Ponytail is a cool little waterfall with the trail wrapping around behind the falls. It's not too far from the trailhead so I added on more distance by continuing over to Oneonta Falls. No rain (odd...) but plenty of eye-popping green foliage everywhere. Expected to see Hobbits running through the underbrush.

Took advantage of all the recent precip and snowfall to see Parker flowing strong. The down-climb to the big fall was "interesting" with a pretty steady flow of water most of the way, which made foot placement and focus all the more demanding. Caught an amazing AZ sunset over Four Peaks on the drive out. Great day!

IMO, this loop is best after a decent soaking, creating a nice stream flow with little waterfalls throughout Barks Canyon and along Bluff Spring area. The desert is loving the recent rain. Saguaros look fat, ocotillos are leafing out, and there's green everywhere. Low hanging clouds kept most of the upper elevations shrouded until the very late afternoon when things began to clear. Met three or four groups of hikers even though the Peralta TH looked like a Walmart parking lot on payday. Fremont Saddle must have been shoulder to shoulder.

I only had a half day (including travel time) to play in this awesome little canyon so I didn't get as far into it as I had hoped this time. Still, great foliage and much easier picking routes around obstacles since water wasn't flowing throughout. I think this is the first time I've left this place with dry shoes.

Did the usual hike up to the aspens for lunch and then headed back. Most of the early morning and afternoon were spent off trail in the shadows to avoid harsh light. Colors were very mixed, especially in the middle elevations. Some maples were blasting prime color while another just a few feet away was summer time green. Still a great way to spend a fall day.

This is always a fun place to wander around at the end of the day as long as you're not opposed to exposure. I had hoped to spot the herd of bighorns that I know frequent the area but it didn't happen. This is a great location to watch the rising full moon!

A tad late with this, too much work travel the last couple of weeks. Compared to the last few years, this showing lived up to the hype, at least in my opinion. I ended up choosing a location off the Harquahala Summit road since the area enjoys pretty dark skies. The moon was waxing a little over 50% and didn't set until around 12:45am, so that messed up the show until after 1:00am. But for the next 3 hours or so it was impressive, at times witnessing 3 or 4 meteors at the same time. Worst part of the night was the murderous bugs.

Since the monsoon is on hiatus our clear skies and relative low humidity makes star gazing pretty optimal right now. I drove out the Florence-Kelvin Hwy just after the new moon and hiked out to a few areas scouting spots for the meteor shower next month. Some interesting terrain for future exploration, but I think I'll keep looking.

Work in Vegas meant opportunities to go play in Valley of Fire again. Amazing place, especially later in the afternoon as the sun dips. Sandstone in open shade creates the most incredible colors. I didn't hike the main trails, with the exception of a night hike to elephant arch. I parked at few of the designated parking areas and then headed off in a direction that looked interesting. It's only an hour drive from town so I was able to get out two afternoons in a row and stay well after dark (Shhh, don't tell the rangers...)

I know most do this hike later when the temps heat up but hiking in cold water doesn't bother me. In fact, the water felt warmer than I was expecting. Great flow down the creek right now with lots of picturesque waterfalls to distract your attention along the way to the big payoff. A few folks showed up at the waterfall while I was waiting for the light to get good but other than that I had the canyon to myself. This is a great hike, even with the tribal permit requirement.

Got Santa's permission to take my new toy out for a pre-Holiday field trip. East entrance again this year but the foul weather a few weeks previous pretty much stripped all the color from the canyon. It was still a fun overnight. Ironically I was visited by a small herd of whitetail deer at my Deer Creek campsite.

Headed south on 79 to get away from the light pollution and ended up a few miles above the junction with 77. The eclipse was much better than previous times I've watched from the valley. Once the eclipse was happening, there were great views of the Milky Way stretching from the eastern horizon straight overhead to the west. It's nice this event happened at a decent time instead of the usual 1 - 3am nonsense.

This is a fun little remote canyon, though very short. I started the hike just as the sun was cresting over the surrounding hills and began raking the scree slopes with warm light. The peace and quiet was shattered when I flushed a couple of whitetail deer near the start of the trail, which sounded like a herd of charging bison due to the thick underbrush and dried leaves. Once my cardiac arrest was over, I continued along the creek finding only a few very small waterfalls. The box area was definitely the highlight with massive boulders to navigate and great pool reflections beneath stunning canyon views. It would be great to be here with a higher flow as the waterfalls would be more numerous and impressive. Perhaps another visit in the Fall...

I don't often seek wildlife for photo ops but I make an exception for the Sandhill Crane migration. It's been 5 years since I first came to see (and hear) the cranes and although the numbers seemed lower this year, it is still an amazing spectacle to experience. Plenty of other wildfowl populating the nearby ponds to keep me entertained while the cranes were out in the fields having lunch.
