Late afternoon Xmas hike with the family - up to the Point, quick pictures and then back down for dinner and gift exchange. Despite the warm temps in Greer the last few days, there was plenty of snow on the trail closer to the top- made slow going. Came down JUST as it got dark. Great way to spend Xmas!!!

Didn't really get the full flavor. Dropped in the canyon on the little side trail off of Boulder Canyon 103. Lots of water in the canyon and I only went as far as I was able without having to wade, which wasn't far. Had fun, lots of sun, very serene with no other people in the canyon. Looking forward to exploring more.

Fun little loop. Met a lively group near Praying hands that started out at Massacre They were led by a feisty matriarch who said they "broke her out of the rest home" for the hike. When pressed about how they managed to get from Massacre Grounds to Praying hands, they said they didn't really know. Maybe they were just being modest.

What a little gem! Beautiful back in the "canyon" near the waterfall. There was very little water in the wash on the way in, but water was flowing downstream from the fall and the fall itself was gushing. Hung out on the rocks for about an hour, had a snack and just enjoyed the solitude. Didn't see anyone at the falls (said hello to two guys and some horsemen on the way in) and it was very very quiet, amazing for this close to the city (even quieter than the Western Supes, like at Massacre or Siphon Draw). Dreamy, relaxing, could of taken a nap.

From the TH down to the creek. Met a couple of guys on the way up Frog Peak who were incensed at a group on top who were "takin' off their clothes! And I'm going to report them!!!". News of the possibility of wilderness nudity (my favorite kind) really fueled my hike, lemme tell ya. Got to the top and there was some kinda weird "fashion shoot" goin' on- guy and a girl in their skivvies standing next to a cactus while a guy was taking their picture. Hey, you see it all in the Supes.

Hiked West Fork for the first time with my girlfriend, Rachel. Beautiful day- lots of snow in the upper canyon and coooold! I haven't been to the "end" of the trail for quite awhile, since I am usually immersed in taking pictures. Great hike- great day. It's good to be back out there!

Return to the scene of the crime. On January 20, 2007, I hiked the Massacre Falls trail in the late afternoon to take sunset photos, got caught after dark, stepped in hole coming back in, dislocated my knee and tore my medial meniscus. 2 years later, I'm finally back. I'm back!!!

Hiked in late this afternoon hoping to see water and a colorful display at sundown. Was not entirely disappointed, although the falls are, as usual, just a trickle. Explored quite a bit waiting for the light, and then like an IDIOT ran completely out of it- while still on the slickrock ridge! I ended up hiking the entire trip back by headlamp, and of course coming down from the ridge I immediately lost the trail and had to resort to my GPS. I followed that thing pretty much like a beacon all the way back. The Massacre Grounds trail is not especially a trail you want to night hike, lemme tell ya. GPS displayed a total of 6.01 miles traveled. Thats mostly just stumbling around in the dark.

Here's a little bit of product review: The Petzl Tikkina headlamp is a nice little gizmo for lounging about camp after a backpack and possibly for attacking a maze of stereo or computer cable hiding behind a desk, but for illuminating rocks, trees, prickly pear, horse poop, and the ghosts of insane miners, it bites the big one. My GPS was throwing more light. Shoulda just followed the glow from my cellphone, if I knew I wouldn't need all the battery power it holds later for explaining myself to the wife...

These little involuntary adventures sure make life interesting, don't they?

To the saddle- started at daylight, a few people going up and many coming down, including a group of about 10 with enough gear to backpack the Supes for a week- I mean huge packs!

New lunch time destination- since I only work about 5 min away. Went in from 7th, but next time I think I'll go in from Central and get right to it.

Nothing special- just the traditional Hiker's Guide Loop. The whole day was a bit strange- retained an eerie quality that no doubt helps the Supes live up to their name. Most of the afternoon, the sun was nothing more than a blazing white hot scar, and the push up the switchbacks to Miner's Summit was probably harder than it should have been. No breeze- not even a hint. Felt better dropping down to Bluff Canyon, the breeze picked up, beautiful views definately helped. Apparently, there were many people on the trail today; I didn't see them. Besides a small group of fellow headlamp hikers at the start, I saw only 4 people all day: two guys passed me near the Dutchman/Bluff Springs intersection, and I passed one guy at one point sitting on camp chair at a saddle, beating softly a small painted hand drum. His other half carried a larger unpainted version. I passed her on the descent to the trailhead.
I didn't care much for the Dutchman part of this loop. Next time- up Bluff Springs and an attempt at the mountain itself.
