Sorry about the photo bomb, it's really tough to weed thru 600 amAZingly beautiful photos! ;)

This canyon loop had been on the list for some time now and an early winter storm postponed this trip last year and another late snowstorm almost threatened this weekend as well, but we took the risk and drove up there anyways. :) It was cold & windy Friday night camping on the rim near Eminence Break and we got a light dusting of snow the next morning, but other than being a little chilly it wasn't that bad of weather that Saturday... From the TH, we backtracked along the road and then followed the break NE to a cairned ravine that dropped steeply down in the south fork of Tatahatso Canyon. It was rather loose and required a few class 4 downclimbs but we were down to the bouldery wash soon enough. :o Now to get to the lower narrows required loads & loads of down climbing, rock hopping, and weaving thru boulders. Once at the narrows, we quickly suited up and began the challenging descent of this not often visited hidden gem. :D It was full of awkward short rappels into many cold pools with plenty of down climbing and rock hopping mixed in. The anchors are as interesting as usual in the GC yet solid from previous parties and careful rope management is required to prevent any coreshots or rope pull issues which we thankfully avoided. :) After an exhausting day of only covering 4 miles as the bird flies, we finally reached the Colorado River and found a great little patch of sand for us 4 to crash for the evening. The next morning we blew up our pool toys and prepared for the 7 mile float down the mighty Colorado River. We ran that Tatohtsu rapid for bonus points but bypassed a gnarly rapid about 1.5 miles down river but we ran all the other small rapids until reaching our takeout above President Harding rapid though one of our party was crazy enough to run that rapid as well. :y: We setup camp on another sandy beach overlooking that rapid and set all our wet gear to dry before heading up the lower Eminence Break trail with our canyoneering gear to drop into lower Tatahoysa Canyon. Last fall we did this canyon, but we made a slight navigational error and dropped into the less exciting north fork. This time we of course dropped into the amAZingly sweet south fork and really enjoyed those missed handful of rappels up to 140ft before the confluence. Further down canyon, we again enjoyed those sweet few rappels up to 150ft in the lower canyon with the last one overlooking the river and our camp from a high perch. :) Camping another night along the river was SO flipping sweet & relaxing and the next morning we slowly made our way up the steep yet shady Eminence Break trail. Hooray for Tatas! (canyons that is) :y:

A great way to beat the crowds and spice up a classic canyon is to run it at NIGHT!!! :y:

The AZ Rendezvous was going on this weekend and I looking for a good 2/3 day canyon near Salome Jug so that we'd finish before dinner time and could head over for a night run thru the Jug and this sweet canyon fit the bill perfectly. It wasn't flowing but it's still a great canyon and be brought a 300ft rope for the 2-stage 250ft falls. I guessed it to be close to 225ft and it was SO sweet to do it as one BIG rappel as opposed to breaking it up. There's a few other cool rappels but this canyon is about that BIG waterfall into a narrow hallway and mucho rock hopping and boulder down climbing to exit that super rocky canyon. The canyon finally pops out of the mountain where I've always exited up onto the flat desert on the leftside of the canyon and lightly bushwhacked my way back to the TH. So sweet to share this canyon with two new canyon buddies! :D

I dropped the R this time since it's not quite as difficult of a rappel if done as one BIG drop...

With the Anchas flowing good and this weekend opening up, this seemed like the perfect canyon to hit this weekend. :y: My buddy worked the graveyard shift, hence the late start and camping just above the lower narrows of Park Creek. I was hurting also from a cold so a halfday that first day worked out good for both of us. The hike to upper Park Canyon isn't that bad and goes by fast plus it's so sweet to see the first waterfall section after all that work to reach it. :D We did a few of the rappels that Saturday afternoon before retiring for the night on some flat creekside red quartzite. Sunday was the bulk of the canyon loop for us and we were all suited up for the lower wet Park Canyon with it's pools and slickrock. I elected to do the 40ft slide while by buddies rappelled it. From that sweet pool room we did another 50ft rappel under the arch to reach the rocky creekbed of upper Salome Creek. Mucho rock hopping, creek wading, and light bushwhacking is required to reach the Grotto section but it is SO worth it. :y: The upper part of those narrows involved some small slides and sweet jumps into the Grotto Pool itself. More boulder climbing thru the narrows to reach the simul-rappel spot with a swim under a boulder bridge. :GB: We were kinna miffed to find some food trash down in this section??? Who hiked cans and large plastic bags in here? :x Careless hikers or hunters or maybe it washed down from above? I picked some of it up and moved it away from the pool, but it was too much trash and too far yet to go for us to haul it out... Another waterfall rappel, a few more pools, a nice jump, and a few more slides and we were at the confluence with Workman Creek and dropping gear. The hike up Workman is a bit of a challenge esp to get up out of the creek and bushwhack past that 50ft falls but it certainy is a sweet falls. Some more creek hiking and we're on the trail proper and hiking up the steep Hell's Hole trail. I was still dragging rear from my cold so it was SO nice to hit some flatish trail up on top yet we still had a few miles to go to reach the TH. Such an amAZing canyon loop but you def have to EARN this one. : rambo :

Once you've run a halfday canyon at least a few times, it becomes a contender for a warm night run. :D And the fact the a recent storm and subsequent snow melt had this canyon flowing pretty good, made it a no brainer that we needed to quickly get out and hit it at night. :y:

Super sweet canyon with new friends! From the bottom up on this run to the slides with rappels up to 50ft. I edited a cool video in iMovie but didn't take enough photos to be worth posting...

Had to work that Saturday and was itching for a halfday canyon. When I noticed the Parker guarge spiking from snowmelt from a recent storm, I quickly changed plans and drove up there after work and caught the creek flowing 2-3 cfs. :y: I took some great videos and made a nice edited video with them in iMovie but alas I didn't take much photos that are worth posting... ;)

From the top -> down with rappels up to 70ft. Didn't know if we'd have much flow after this weak winter but we were ecstatic to find the pools full and clear. :y:

Sweet Catalina canyon on the eastern side of the range that's best done when flowing! :D We hiked up the Romero trail past the popular pools and noted the upper narrows while hiking further up trail to drop in above them. The canyon was a little bushy at first but quickly turned technical with a handful of sweet waterfall rappels into cool pools and loads of traversing down canyon on that slick Catalina granite. The lower narrows also had some sweet slides before the narrows quickly ended and turned back into a normal open canyon. We dropped gear and quickly made our way back up to the trail and made the sunny hike back down the the TH.

Been looking across at this canyon on the farside of the lake for some time now. ;) Even went with a couple friends last winter to scout out the last drop and then paddle around to find a ramp and then hiked up to the saddle to verify we could drop into this canyon from there... But alas, we never got around to coming back with ropes before it got too hot and the snakes and motorheads came back out of hibernation.

Worked a halfday back in town; sometimes it's tough to convince peeps to join me afterwards. Plus I have a new packraft that can inflate & deflate in minutes all while standing on unsteady and thorny banks of the lake and they don't... ;) So I geared up, got a few funny looks, hopped on the lake and paddled across while keeping an eye out for boats speeding by. :o Kept paddling around to the approach ramp, deflated the raft, and scrambled up the loose slope to the saddle. Not a very large canyon by any means yet remote & secluded and the descent in was just as loose and slow going. I dropped in just above the boulder strewn narrows with a few small pools and bush to navigate past. Was quickly hit with a sweet view of the lake and my first drop of 40ft off a boulder pile with plenty of anchor options. Dropped down with another rappel soon afterwards, so I quickly found an anchor option for that 20ft drop & sighting another anchor option for the 3rd drop before pulling the rope from the first drop. :) The anchor on the 2nd drop is not meant for high traffic and it's tough to weight it, but at least I knew I wouldn't stick my rope in the many chockstones. My anchor for the 3rd drop is equally difficult to get to since it requires squeezing thru a hole all while trusting a rockpile bridge suspended 10ft above another boulder. Great place to place the last anchor for the 2-stage 70ft drop below. One down, you're in a cool boulder alcove hidden from the lake and the sun. Some light scrambling to get down to the lake and you need to be creative to find a safe place to blow up your packraft and launch back onto the lake. I was rewarded with a sunset across the lake while paddling back and hoping the speed boats can see me. Don't forget to figure in 3 miles of paddling there and back. :D
