with Pat, Jen and Damian and Buffett...first time for all three...couple of slides and falls, but otherwise excellent hike...only two sections required lifting Buffett up or down...left new Summitt Log in Mailbox...red journal like book...and a few HAZ pens... :)

Incidently, the Forest Road in has recently been improved, no more huge potholes, and the parking area has been improved since my last visit, now there's a bathroom and tons of parking...

This hike could have been a disaster! Camped at Pine Flat Friday night in the rain, because there were 3 of us I'd borrowed my buddy's tent (mine's a 2 person) and failed to set it correctly...fly didn't fly...rained in the tent...slept in back of Xterra...3 of us and the dog...cozy to say the least...stopped raining around 5am...rain held off long enough to make breakfast...headed down Oak Creek to Secret Canyon TH...buddy Forest Road, surprised at seeing Lexus sedan at TH...then again, not so surprised...throughout the hike, it would occasionally start to rain, but never enough to cause us to look for cover, just a few sprinkles...crusied up to junction with Miller trail, then entered the canyon itself...amazing colors...pleased to see that the fall folliage was still changing ...lots of yellows and oranges...just spent the day enjoying the hike...GREAT HIKE!

We were looking for an all day hike, and I remembered that one of Mike's Top 5 was a 12-13 miler in the Sups...he listed it as Second Water to Boulder Canyon to Dutchman...we did his hike in reverse...let me tell ya...GREAT HIKE!!!!...we only encountered a few other hikers (3 eating breakfast at Parker Pass, 2 hiking up Dutchman below the pass and one with 2 dogs a bit later on) we were just walking and talking, enjoying the scenery...easy stroll mostly down hill until Boulder Canyon Trail...then things required a bit more effort...excellent temps, overcast sky, no sun, but still fun...encountered 4 tarantulas throughout the day...that was cool!...just as Boulder Canyon was getting old we arrived at Second Water...short rest stop, then up the hill and into Garden Valley...from there it's a breeze back to the TH...great day hike! Mike know's how to pick them!

We left 1st Water TH and headed down the Windmill hike...followed First Water Creek to Second Water trail, followed Second Water to Garden Valley to just past the huge water dug out/retention pond/thing...then back Second Water to First Water trailhead...the distance is an estimate...saw first tarantula in the wild! COOL!...great hike...don't know why we'd never explored this area before...

We altered our Rim to Rim plan due to transportation issues, so opted for R2river2rim...caught 7am shuttle to S. Kaibab trailhead (thanks John and Susan in Rimrock!)...set good pace, enjoyed views and just being in this magical place...decided not to keep split times, so not sure how quickly we descended, but we kept a good pace and didn't take any breaks longer than to alter clothing or relieve ourselves...fewer people on trail than I'd expected...encountered a few snakes, though no rattlers...was more enthralled with the North Rim views more than anything...savored the moment when we hit the bridge...watched rafter come toward beach...headed into Phantom Ranch...numerous day hikers...many heading up to North Rim...spent maybe 20 minutes eating pretzels and drinking ice tea...refilled bladders...wanted to order a beer, but thought it unwise as the real work was about to begin...headed back up on Bright Angel...slowed by the darn sand...hate that sand...though easier with just a dayhiking backpacker...lots of potential Darwin Award winners swimming in eddy where trail near river...people need to read and mind signs!...crusied on the ascent into Indian Garden...overrun with small childern...some type of convention or something! TONS of kids...made a hasty departure...slow ascent for remained of hike...focused on enjoying the hike, made it into a stroll...one of my best hikes ever...enhanced by man playing tribal music on flute between rest houses...topped out at just under 8 hours...we were certain we could have done it faster, but that wasn't the goal for this hike...we were there to enjoy the Grand Canyon...ordered the 1 lb burger at Busters in Flag for dinner...watched D-Backs get eliminated...

EXCELLENT ADVENTURE

mid afternoon start after driving up from Parker Canyon Lake (near US/Mexico border)...

Slow time...baked in the sun...longer rest at summit...descent faster...not our best showing on this trail, though we've done it a few times...

We took Marshal Gulch all the way to the summitt...working on the AZ 20/20 this hike is ranked as the 17th peak on the list...info below from http://www.az2020.org website...Marshall Gulch Trail #3 to Aspen Loop Trail #93 Length of Hike (r/t): 5.5 miles Trail Elevation Change: 1,747 ft. Trailhead Elevation: 7,410 ft.

Apparently there were some BEE issues, as there were warning signs at the TH and when entering the BEE area...even caution tape...we had no problems...nobody on trail until arriving at ski lift area...descent fast...encountered many heading up...one guy hauling easily 10 pounds of camera gear...with 2 cameras around his neck...

Excellent forest hike...

I was going to write up a summary for this one, you beat me to it! This is a different type of hike. I agree, start early to beat the crowds. On the way in we were alone, heading out we easily counted 30 people heading in.

Bring 3 forms of light. Make sure your batteries are new. Although easy to follow, I couldn't imagine negotiating the terrain without light.

There are a few sections that require you to kinda "squat walk", or even crawl.

Incidently, when we parked, the huge parking area was empty. When we left, there wasn't a spot available and people were parking along the access road.

Great Day Hike - was way hot on the way in, but out the sun was covered by clouds. Only encountered 1 other group of hikers, and only 1 helo overflight, so it was a peaceful hike! Loved how the trail ended at the wall.

Reading all the forum posts about the HAZ hike last weekend made me want to give this trail a shot, so on Sunday, April 28 my buddy Tony and I headed out to Roger's Canyon. On the way in, we noticed a rather interesting (dry) water cache across the
wash. Once the road gained elevation, the
views were spectacular. We had a few guests at the trailhead. The trail itself was easy to follow; until we got to what we believed was the junction. Since the sign only indicated the trail we were on (Reavis Ranch Trail) and not the Roger's Canyon Trail, we figured we were supposed to turn left and head toward the creek. Along the way, we noticed an interesting tree ornament hanging over the trail. We were enjoying the hike so much; we overshot the ruins and ended up in Angel Basin (I think Fritzski mentioned it in his post). The views were wonderful!
Backtracking, we saw what we believed to be the ruins. After scrambling up the slope, our hunch was confirmed by the forest service. After exploring the lower level ruins, we followed the path to the second floor. These ruins are amazingly well preserved. They reminded me of the ones at Tonto National Monument. The structures were
just amazing. We were careful to look but not touch. After exploring and a quick snack, we headed back, catching one last glimpse of the ruins from the trail. Our hike took about 5 hours. We keep a mild pace and took our time. We passed several people heading in when we were heading out. If you head out to Roger's Canyon, remember that the trail junction is no longer signed where you need to turn left. I believe it's about a mile and a half from the trailhead. Overall, this is a great hike, I'm sure I'll be back!

On Sunday my buddy and I made a go for the peak. The summitt was covered in clouds the whole drive out there...infact, we never saw the summitt until we were standing on it. I tell ya, Fritzski was right with his comment 'The final climb up Brown's is more technically demanding and exposed than anything on the Flatiron.' We opted to not return via the same route, We bushwacked down a North facing canyon and then west to the saddle. It went very quickly and was not too difficult at all. Once back at the saddle, the clouds cleared and it became a beautiful day. Up until that point, the weather was very windy. Great hike!

On March 14th we took some visitors from back east on this trail. It was a weekday morning, so we weren't surprised to only find 1 other vehicle at the trailhead. I'd assume that this is a popular hike on the weekends! The old jeep trail gently ascends as it winds deeper into the canyon. The gentle ascent gradually increases to steps. The trail is all up. Not difficult, but it is up, our guests were a bit winded upon reaching the overlook. After another set of steps, there it is, a uniquely impressive formation. We walked across the arch, and were surprised that it was wider then it looks from the trail. A few photos, then back down. Before heading back to the car, we took the short spur trail to view the arch from below, which was equally impressive. Nice, short, easy hike with an excellent payoff.
