Heading north to saddle that takes you down to the creek bed was very difficult to follow. I don't think I was on the actual trail more than 50% of the time, even though I was following my tracks from a previous trip. Once I dropped down into the creek bed, the travel was nice ... early morning shade, a lot of firm sandy sections to walk on and no catclaw to fight with. Heading west from Burrow spring things got much worse. Irv Kanode and I had done this back in 2005 and I remember a lot of vegetation. (Irv had the foresight to to bring along a saw and pruning shears). It was nasty, but not as bad as this trip. I had my shears and saw but it was slowing me down so much, I finally just starting plowing through the stuff. At one point (approaching the saddle about 1mi east of Sycamore Spring) I was completely disoriented. I followed a creek bed that I knew was parallel to the trail and then headed on a perpendicular path (through a catclaw forest) until I crossed it. Once past the saddle, the trail was easier to follow, until I was past Sycamore spring. From here to the south heading section, the vegetation was bad again. I figure the overgrown catclaw cost me a 2.5hour time penalty. |
