We heard about this hike from our server at The New Sheridan Chop House. So glad he shared it with us -it was beautiful!! It's somewhat of a rough drive to get to the trail head, but worth it. The beginning of the trail is pretty flat- we cross a boulder canyon and stream (this happens several times....some balancing on felled trees to cross makes it fun!). The trail is very soft and well-defined. Then towards the end...the last .5 miles maybe?...the trail gets steeper. I thought we were close to the lake so we sped up our speed, only to realize once we "summited" that we still had elevation gain to clear past the meadow. But then we came to the turquoise blue lake with large copper trout swimming in it. Beautiful! We had a snack and took pictures here before walking down. This has now become our favorite hike in Telluride!

A beautiful hike - we started from "the end" - from Oak Street. I thought this felt harder, but it'd been 2yrs since we've hiked JW so who knows. This is a rather strenuous hike - at altitude. But you cross over a stream, bridges, and there is a beautiful meadow area at the summit that is ful of aspen trees and gives a great view of the ski mountain. We love this - it's a must-do every time we visit Telluride!

A lovely hike with trailhead accessible from Telluride. Love how many trailheads start in town! It starts on Pine street, and you walk along a wide jeep trail road for a while. The elevation gain is very gentle - and as a result, this is a very popular part of the hike. It does get steeper, and the population gets thinner. :) At one point about 3/4 up the trail you come to an area of cairns....literally hundreds of cairns. We called it Hobbit Land...another couple were hiking to that area seeking what they'd heard as "Little Hawaii." It's strange, but a fun place to take a break (and add to the collection). The first time we did this hike was in November 2013 and we show shoed to the lower falls. This time we went up to the upper falls - amazing water fall!! You can get under the falls if you want. We liked this so much we hiked it again with our friends a couple days later.

We were on a fishing expedition - so we grabbed a camp chair and a fly fishing pole and started out from the parking lot. we hand't expected it to be such a long hike! We were thankful to have logged a workout after this one! We hiked up quite a bit, and kept getting higher above the river...but eventually we intersected with the river and we put our pole in for a while. There are shady spots to take a break, good water to fish.

Started at McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Gateway Loop trail to Windgate Pass to Toms Thumb trail, and back the same way. 12p to 4 pm, beautiful day of 65 degrees and sunny! Awesome views of Scottsdale, Silveleaf club. 5.5 miles each way, about 2,000 ft climb according to gps watch. Some people were stopping at the top of the trail and not walking up to the thumb. The Thumb is a must do! It's a little like the scramble at the top of Camelback. Along the way, there's a water source and a bunch of bees. Also, the old fort is kind of cool.

Unplanned stop, walked it in flip flops (not recommended). Flips kept me from walking into some areas I'd like to explore with more confidence-inspiring footwear. Well-preserved ruin, great info posted throughout. Views are incredible!

Made it! Started early .... 7:00am. Drizzle the whole way, but generally good weather. Made it to the top in 2hrs, 22 minutes. Past the saddle it becomes much more difficult, compiling factors of altitude and fatigue from 1+ hr of hiking already logged.

Views - it was cloudy, but not windy. Couldn't see much.

Splits: 1 hr 22 minutes to 'tree line' marker.
2:22 to summit. Rest for 15 minutes at top before heading down.

Watched the weather very carefully - as the forecast was 30% chance of thunderstorms. We wondered if we wouldn't make it, but once we started out we pushed to get to the top. It was nice...humid (no mosquitoes), great flowers, excellent reprieve from the 114' day we expected in Phoenix. We made it to the ridge line in 1hr 15mnins, and then saw the storm coming in (lots of lightning) and it was coming quickly. We decided to head down, and were SO DISAPPOINTED we didn't make the summit. We hung out for a while, and thought about turning around and going to the top, but we were hailed on. We ended up getting hailed on twice on the way down, and had heavy rain all the way to the car. We were bummed about the storm, but think we'll drive up and try it again next weekend. We'll start earlier (didn't make it to trailhead until 11:15am)...maybe start heading up around 7 or 8am, so we can be down by about 12 or 1pm?? Hopefully avoid the storms that way!

Beautiful day! Conservationist showed us petroglyphs at the start near parking lot, also instructed us to find other ruins along the way. Reached Elephant Mtn Fort ruin in 1:30, then hiked back down other side and connected with Spur Cross trail, back to parking lot. Round trip: 3:45.

Hiked Elephant Trail - Spur Cross 1/6/07. Perfect day, 70 degrees, started at 12:30pm. Trail is rugged after you leave the jeep trail, but recent improvements have been made including steps down to the creek bed and better trail markings. Plenty of cairns also assist. At the saddle at the base of elephant mountain - look up to the top to view indian ruin site! Stone wall, 6-ft high in some places, built as a fort for protection. Small windows are visible in walls. Amazing, and a surprise, as didn't know we'd find any on the hike. Also, in creek bed and along trail near west side of the base of mountain, look for metates (indian washing stones). We saw two. Ruin is closed, but pottery shards are present at the saddle. Great hike - good exercise, strenuous at parts. We went only 15 minutes past the saddle (lava rock flow on east side of mtn overlooking Cave Creek) and turned around. 3 1/2 hours round trip, including approx 45 minutes of ruin/site exploration.

Hike was moderate with a short stint of more difficulty during a 450-foot incline. The ruins at the top were amazing to explore - estimated to be 700 yrs old, you can still see the finger prints in the mortar between rocks. Walk a little farther to the Vee in the canyon, and you can see a more preserved ruin below. Saw rattlesnake under rock on way back.

Got lost coming down the mountain - while descending the steep 450-foot decline, needed to pay better attention to the cairns. Found our way back eventually.

Temperature was perfect - approximately 80 degrees. We started around 9:30am. Took about an hour of hiking time round trip, plus time exploring the ruins.

Hot! Group of 7 hiked w/ packs down Havasu trail. This is 2 weeks after the murder of a female tourist in the canyon, and it was still unsolved. The hike down took about 4 hours, pack weight about 40#. Set up camp about 1 mile in, just near the porta-pots and the 2nd set of falls. Swam at first set of falls...cold water! The rest of the group made it that evening. Next day, we climbed down 2nd set of falls (nerve racking), and set out to find teh 3rd set of falls. We were ill-prepared and did not make it all the way. But enjoyed wading through water, jumping off rope swing. Next day, hike out. Had donkey carry heavy tent equipment. Hike out took 3:45 (faster than descent).
