climbed with Bob to reintroduce him to outdoor climbing. Rapped down from the top and then put Bob to work on Unknown which he got up without a lot difficulty. Great accomplishment given the difficulty of the start and crux

I climbed Unknown and took a shot at totally trad. I couldn't pull the start but started on unknown instead, Then traversed over to totally trad to finish and clean anchors. Lesson learned is don't gym climb the night before a hard outdoor climb :(

We checked the rest of the wall to try to identify the rest of the moderates. Found two which both looked like no TR and tough leads but maybe next time.

Thanks Bob for patience climbing and great belay work.

great day for climbing as we got a couple routes in before it gets hot.
dead dobie has always been hard for e but today I managed both moderates. Left the draw in the truck so didn't get a chance to lead anything. Maybe next time.

Provided rope gun service for a group of gym climbers. Put up 5 routes and also top roped a couple of them. New skill/thrill was putting up Dr Giggles and Stuart Little as separate climbs on one rope. Worked great keeping people climbing while we put up the rest of the ropes. Only issue was having to think through the cleaning process.

Helped one gentleman get his first outdoor lead on the new short route next to lumber jack. Fun to see people achieve new goals and he was one happy climber.

dinner at los hermanos where we now rate a hug from Flo for our many visits (and generous tips)

led five routes including getting 5.7 hidden treasure clean for the first time :y: the other four were old favorites that we were scouting for potential future events.

weather was perfect for climbing and we had the place to ourselves. :)

meetup. led 5.8 nothing shocking adding one more to my pond collection :y: . I love aretes and this one was a lot of fun with significant exposure adding to the thrill :scared: .

the Ponds was a zoo with a rather large contingent of ASU outdoor club folks getting their first taste of outdoor climbing. Amazing what youthful enthusiasm can do!

perfect weather though los hermnos was overflowing :( with people taking the Superior housing tour. Went to JBs instead.

Perfect climbing day at the Pond for mid-week climb. We took newbie outdoor climber and hung ropes for him as well as getting in some leading.

Christmas Chocolate was a lead of a climb I had never been up and was quite a joy once I got past the "if I fall it will hurt bad" start. Nice slab and some offwidth crack at the top.

Also tried out the rap out that avoids the difficult (for us seniors) downclimb. We had brought an extra rope because it looked like more than one rope lenght. It was at just under 200 feet. Rigging a two rope rap was a first and the rap down a chimney interesting as I thought I was going to get my fat body wedged but made it ok.

bottom line is that is much quicker to do the down climb and probably safer since a two rope rap adds a couple more ways to screwup. Fun drill and definitly should be done at least once.

dinner at los hermanos and newbie had a great time as did we.

Killed some time waiting for the poultry show to conclude. Great trail. Need to take swim suit next time as the hot tub was inviting after morning hike/climb/bushwhack but the sign said "bathing suits required"

Saw two roadrunners including one that was the Santa Claus of roadrunners- aka fat. Very unafraid as I almost walked on top of him and he didn't run off. Guess they are finding it easier to pick up picnic scraps rather than hunt lizards.

Family outing to Safford for annual poultry show. I hike while the show is in session and chose to head "out that way" as a starter. Preston has some hikes in the area but I didn't think I had enough time for them.

First challenge was to actually get out of town and on to the hills. I found that cactus road west led to a T junction with what eventually became a primitive road going south. I picked a convenient spot along side the road, parked and took off hiking towards the nearest mesa.

I followed a concrete lined irrigation ditch which literally cut trough a hill and then contoured towards a dam/pond and what looked like a pump house. Didn't go there because it was down and I wanted to go up the mesa immediately to the south.

There are a number of mesas west of Safford and I was surprised to find that they are composed of round river rock and dirt. I don't know how they stay together as everything is loose and rolls. It was quite the trek to crawl up the roller coaster of rock but I got there and then had a look around. Top is flat (duh its a mesa) and view to the northwest of snow covered Mt Graham worth the trip. I also saw a earth dam and large containment area to the NE which looked interesting. Checking the map when I got home identified it as Lebanon Reservoir 2 which in turn feeds the previously mentioned pond.

Hiked down the steeper NW side because there was a drainage with a lot of bigger river rock (18 inch to 36 inch) that looked less likely to tumble me than the other options. Proved a good choice as only about one eighth of them were loose which left a veritable superhighway to hop down. Got down and headed for the dam. It is dirt and long but not too high and would form a large pond when the snow starts melting. Saw what looked like trails on a mesa to the sooth so went there. Lots of bushwhacking and when I hit my turn time I chose to go low and follow what appeared to be an old trail. It was overgrown by the mesquites and several places were crawl through. Returned to the car via the road to the dam as it seemed that the shooting was done and it would be safe to be down low.

Beautiful day for exploring!

Pam's choice of Stewart lured me off the climbing cliffs and back to a hike. I had never been on Stewart nor had I even thought about it but it turned into a fun clamber. Weather was perfect and the group a privilege to be with.

The other logs tell the story of the group and the food so here are a couple of statistics that interested me. First, the average height of Stewart from 6 GPS was 2994 feet compared to 2998 from the Topo map. Four feet error in GPS altitude is pretty good.

Second, the group total mileage for 2013 is 11,728.7. The annual mileage is bimodal with the top 6 averaging 1708 and the second group averaging 211 miles for the year. Pam is to be congratulated for creating an event that brought these folks together in one activity.

Thank you Pam for organizing and Randall for the excellent post hike repast.

I am looking forward to next year.

Perfect day to climb at the pond. comfortable temps, blue sky and no wind. Conditions almost offset the wretched climb in and up from the road. Water was running which made the plank walk past the first pool a tad more in the pucker factor. I had planned to rap out but when we got to the rap point it looked like two ropes and our second rope was in the truck. :(

Led two old favorites and definitely felt 2 months layoff from leading and about a year away from the pond. Led "fat boy" which is named for me and restored my bruised ego acquired "on next to nothing". Lunch and pie at los hermanos and classic sunset over Picket post.

The objective of the day was to visit the bridge and explore the area. We hiked this as an out and back from Sheep Bridge with the destination merely to hit a turn around time that would ensure daylight on the return drive. My partner is recovering from knee surgery so a relatively flat hike was required and this was perfect.

Nice trail that I believe connects to the saddle below Mazatzal peak. Perfect hiking day with clear blue sky and moderate temps.

The hike / drove ratio was about .5 which I would usually consider poor but we took the bloody basin road on our return. This was a lot of mountain driving and some stream crossing plus some spectacular views. If you like back country driving it is a fun trip and we got to eat dinner at the rock springs pie shop as a side benefit. However, if you just want to hike take cave creek road as it is much better driving. Either route still requires high clearance from the junction down to the river.

Is there a better way to get out of a no-climb-today funk than to bump in to Kelly on the ridge line? I don't think so and it was very timely since we met at my 1 mile mark which pushed me over 100 for the year. Funk cured, I happily finished an abbreviated loop.

Trail cleanup with AMC, Took Mesquite canyon trail from Toms Thumb trail head to Sven I and II, Chopped some brush, fixed some trail drainage, repaired cairns and graded some of the trail to channel the climbers a bit better. The climber trails were in pretty good shape and the areas I worked on last year seemed to be holding up except for one area where we had attempted to create a reroute by blocking a trail. All the blocks (which included a couple of cholla) were gone. Bags of dirt were still in place, however, which was surprising given the steep areas and obvious water that they had survived.

On the way out we saw a huge boulder that had recently broken loose and disintegrated, Very impressed with the amount of damage one rock can cause. It is also a reminder that the rocks we grab hold of to climb can and do come loose including the big ones.

Had a guided tour of the climbs and called it a day. Several people thanked us for helping with trails which was nice to hear.

AMC outing to classic McDowels climb. Day started out with a cold wind and clouds keeping the sun from warming. After the hike up the hill, we found wind on the rock in the 20 to 40 mph range which made for difficult route setting.

The outing leaders managed to get a couple of face climbs set up a bit to the southeast and these were climbable due to being off the ridge line. I cant find any beta on them but they climbed as 5.7 although rated as 5.5

Happily the wind died out in the afternoon and we got to climb the thumb summit using the west corner route. Although I was hoping for another shot at Treibers, I was thrilled to make the summit at all given the conditions. :y: Rapped of the west side and headed down the mountain to cold beer and lunch at 4 Peaks.

Looking forward to the next opportunity to TR the classic routes on this rock

We expanded our knowledge of Queen Creek climbing with this off the beaten path crag. I was looking through Marty's book several weeks ago and located the trailhead after a day at the pancake house. It looked interesting and the guide book isted several moderates so pitched the concept to Kelly and off we went. I admit I had her at a moment of weakness due to hunger but we solved that at the brass rail. Interesting crowd you see in a bar on Sunday morning but the food was good.

The approach was a bit steep and slippery but relativly short. The anchors were mostly accessible and I even used the first one to rap in which was fun though I paid a price for not having repacked my rope after the last use. Untangling is best done watching TV not at the top of a climb.

Not sure where the route lists went for this area but Kelly posted them in her triplog. Led one and TRed the rest on the north half of the wall. We found that TR could be set on many of the routes and only one was a bit heady-thank you Kelly for setting Projectile!

Projectile was a lot of fun. It is a dihedral which required stemming, mantling, face climbing and some wiggling (technical term) to get my fat posterior up a chimney thingy at the top. Looking forward to leading this route.

Once again we had the place to ourselves and the weather was great as was my partner. We are looking forward to returning to lead more of the routes and also to play with the 5.9 crack route that shares space with projectile

We tried something new by stopping at Los Hermanos for breakfast on our way out to Queen Creek Good food, quick and cheap which was great way to start the day.

We participated in the Semi-annual roadside cleanup and climb with the Arizona Mountaineering Club. It is amazing how much trash accumulates alongside our 1 mile of US60 but fortunately we get a pretty good crowd so it goes quickly. The 30 of us filled about 40 trash bags in 90 minutes and then headed off to Upper Devils to climb.

It was fun top-roping stuff that I cant lead like Ferocious Flo which is a three star 5.9. I have yet to make it clean on the bolt line but have been up it at least times by choosing a climbable line that isn't always on the bolt line. We also top roped a trad 5.6 that I didn't know was there. Great fun up an off width crack along side Flo. I am not sure where the pro would go but if we can set a top rope anchor we can work it out. My partner sent a 5.11b as her first climb of the day :y: . I think she has been sandbagging me :) We also got in a couple of favorites to fill in the day

After clean up and tear down, we headed for Los Hermanos. I thought we would never get 25 people accommodated when we found the parking lot full but all the cars were for an upstairs wedding so we easily fit.

Sadly no Negra Modello but anything cold would do and we had great lunch. Flo the waitress (nice coincidence) remember us from many visits and shared some excellent pie from her private stash. Great day, company and weather

Bunch of folks at upper devils today and on the nearby Pinals as well.

Fun climbing but got our fill of face climbing. Led no breeze twice and hidden treasure once but skipped the trad climbing today.


Hunted down the trailhead for the Lost Wall for future visit when it cools down. Then off to Los Hermanos for lunch and apple pie before heading back to the garage and the race car.

We have been waiting all summer to get onto this wall and it was worth the wait. We climbed everything that we could find on this granite wall. Climbing was all moderate mixed routes which Kelly was able to setup for top roping. I did get in one trad lead but it wasnt too exciting since there were two bolts already on it. Bolts take the pucker factor down a lot compared to the mystery of your pro placements. But it was still fun working with the features and trying to place different pieces.

The setting for the wall is beautiful with watson lake as the back drop, fall colors starting to show and a nice short approach from a paved parking lot. Add in a perfect weather, great dinner and excellent company made for a great day outdoors.
