(posting some old geocaching hikes I've done in the past - Estimating the distance and time on this one.)

Easter day hike with my dog. Cannot recall all the details, but parked in lot off of Espola Rd. around N 33° 01.043 W 117° 01.486. Followed Green Valley Truck Trail west and then north to the dam. Once at the top, I hiked all the way to the gate at the top of the lake. Hike was easy going pretty much until the middle section where you got a good incline. Views from the top were nice and very flat along the wide trail to the west of lake. With the exception of the first part of hike in the trees (~1.5 miles), you're totally exposed to elements with some nice breeze at/near top (hopefully)

Jennifer and I decided since the weather was cool and we didn't have our kids for Christmas this year, we'd take on Iron Mountain. Iron Mountain is not hard, but it's a longer summit hike on the outskirts of San Diego. Lots of people with the same idea that day. Having a peak to conquer and some geocaches to gather, we made the assent in a drizzling rain. Pretty view from the top. We made way back down and treated ourselves to some Mexican food and a cool cerveza. Another one done!

MTRP has a lot of great sub-urban trails. Climbing to the saddle between the North and South Fortuna Peaks can be done in many ways. On this particular day I started at the equestrian center near the 52 and Mast. I eventually made way to the Oak Canyon trail, which leads to the Fortuna Saddle Trail. This eastern approach provides two different trails - both a good workout. It was a relief to get to the saddle, which was a little under 3 miles from start. Its another .5 mile to the summit and another .5 to the end of the trail. I hope to do North Fortuna soon.

Jen and I came out on a cool day to bag this one with the girls. A nice gentle hike through forest and a nice view from the top.

Decided to make my first approach of Cowles (which I am told is the highest point in the city of San Diego) from less frequented and shadier north side, starting near park on Mesa Drive. My gf needed frequent stops, to which the adequate shade was of help. Once we hit the main track the trailed widened and was a little slick. The approach to the top was steep, with rewarding views in all directions. We took the same wide road down and had to carefully decend. We hit another trail to Mesa Road and eventually hit even road.

Here is another description of the hike:

Second time up this...not sure if it were easier at 36 or 44 years old. It's a good workout no matter how old you are. Last time I did this was 8 years ago with Squatpuke...whom was my companion (along with my 13 and 16YO sons and a couple friends). Not much is different with the exception of the blackened hoodoos from the crash a month ago...such a shame!

Had not done this hike to the end since I was in college at NAU. Can someone confirm the distance to the water pools?

Pros: Great view from the top, well-maintained trail, ample parking, good workout...oh, and this place seems to attract the pretty girls.

Cons: Pretty crowded

Did this on a Saturday morning @ around 7am...got to beat the heat of course. Been in Phoenix since '94 and this is my first ascent..imagine that. Took a few months off due to heal spur, so this is my first workout since. Not a bad little hike.

Because of the nice weather (65F) here in Phoenix, South Mountain was pretty packed today @ 130pm. I decided to try this trail and am glad I did. Not sure if we made it to the destination mentioned in Teva's write-up, but enjoyed it none-the-less.

I found it to be a good workout with all the up and down terrain along the ridgeline as mentioned by others. The Guadalupe Ridge-Ridgeline trail is pretty well defined, so no route-finding is really needed. There are only a couple spots where you have to watch where you are going (e.g. Beverly Canyon descent).

The second part of the hike (beyond the Beverly Canyon trail) I enjoyed much more...there is more green vegetation and the rocks turn from sharp jagged white to much more larger darkened variety, some pretty huge!. We found the two large boulders that were mentioned, and some cairns as you begin to descend to the WNW. However, I'm not sure we found the actual destination. Never did see a sign. Forgot to take the printout or pics....arrggg...Anyways, we eventually found ourselves climbing down big boulders, into the mouth of the Pima Wash. The rock canyon views here was impressive. In the center of this small valley was a large Ocotillo and large Saguaro, along with a pretty large eroded rock "table" (no more than 2-3' tall), near the Saguaro. Recent rains created many small pools of water both iin this little valley as well as other spots along the hike.

From here we took the Pima Wash all the way back two a large stone building near the National Trail. Quite a bit of route finding was needed to get from our turnaraound to the National Trail. There are quite a few 20' drop-offs along the way, but nothing that required aditional equipment.

Did the trip with wife and dog right at 3 hours, which also included several 2-3 minute rest stops along the way. I recommend this to anyone who wants a good somewhat low-impact, scenic hike. The second part is well worth a return visit. I'd like to know who else has been to the small valley I turned around at.

:D Thumbs up!

This was a pretty easy hike on a well maintained trail to a very scenic site. I went with my aunt and son (7) both of which made it no problem. The first .25 mile or so is through some high desert flora, which turns rather barren for approx. the next 1.0 miles. The gradual assent takes you into a pretty canyon area with a lot of vegetation and the rocks/'glyps themself. Unfortunately, the pools were almost bone dry (

What a hike this was! I'm in not the best physical shape, and this hike sure reminded me of it. Although I was exhausted afterwords, it truly was a great experience that I am glad I undertook.

Like most others have noted, this hike is pretty easy for the first 1.5 miles...Once you get to the smooth reddish rock bowl (a.k.a. "Waterfall"), the fun begins. The last mile to the summit fork trail, is demanding. Not only do you have a pretty steep grade, there are also lots of rocks to navigate. Follow the white spray-painted dots and you should have no problem finding your way to the top.

To get to Flatiron's summit, take the dirt trail at the top of the saddle to the right (you can't miss it). For extra fun, take the trail to the left (instead of right to Flatiron). This will take you to another summit which is 100+ feet above Flatiron and has great views of the northern and eastern parts of the :D mountain.

Found the trailhead as described in directions no problem. Anything with ground clearance will get you to the parking lot. Don't recommend a compact or sedan.

Trail was pretty straight foward, with gradual climbs towards the destination. There are only a couple tedious grades, but for the seasoned hiker/climber, are not bad at all.

As others have stated, the Massacre Grounds are unmarked and not distinguishable. The best way to describe it is a slightly sloped plateau that rises to the south towards the mountain. Futher trek towards the mounds brings you to a cliff edge with a 100' or more drop. Me and my friend wanted to go do some cave exploring, so we headed along the ridge to the SE which overlooks a runoff over a red rock face(perhaps the falls that are spoken of?). After doing a little climbing of a butte to the west of the waterfall, we climbed back.

Nice day hike!
