This is my new favorite local desert hike. It is very easy to get to and you can't beat the views and variety on the trail. We traveled counter-clockwise and had quite a climb for elevation but decided to go that way since I have a bad knee and didn't want to come down in elevation quickly. If you prefer a more gradual ascent I have heard that going clockwise is a good idea. The views were spectacular! At the Saddle you have a nice surprise view of Four Peaks going in the direction we did. There is a lot of variety on the trail. At some point it's nice, easy going, steady hiking. At other points you are climbing up the side of a rock with no specific trail. There are definitely a lot of places where I didn't want to look to one side of the trail because there was a steep drop. The trail is described on several sources as 7.4 miles. I'm not sure how we ended up with 8.6. Wouldn't want to have missed any of what we hiked. There was one point near the end, in the direction we were going, where we entered a saguaro forest that is more densely populated than other local hikes.

I am loving these hikes in the Superstition wilderness that I haven't done before. The views are beautiful. Trails are not crowded. A few more people around noon but mornings are quiet.

Peralta Trailhead has changed a lot since I last hiked it over 20 years ago. The trail itself and views are still the same... Beautiful! This is one of my all-time favorite trails!

Nice out and back trail. Not a lot of people there when we started at about 8:30 am on a Friday. We did see a few people on our way back. Pretty views and the hieroglyphics we're cool to see.

Beautiful desert hike. The concrete path that is mentioned in the description is currently under water. We went through the trees to the left of that path and found the trail very easily. We spotted a cardinal, a bald eagle and a flock of ducks flying overhead that were so many in number it sounded almost like an airplane. We saw a few fishermen but no hikers at all on our way out on the trail. Almost immediately upon turning back we started running into hikers. We ran into several groups some quite large. I was surprised as we had started out at about 8 a.m. and that did not seem so early as 2 miss everyone.

Great way to spend Friday the 13th. Trail is steep but not as bad as I thought it would be. I have a bad knee and I was really surprised how well it did. Great views of the East Valley. There were a lot of little people on the trail today. I think it's because it's fall break. Haven't been to Piestewa Peak in many years but I would say the traffic is similar to the way it was back then. I was a little surprised because there is a loop trail in this same park that I do pretty often that doesn't have anywhere close to this much traffic. There were a lot of bees at the top when we got to the cave. My friend who has hiked this trail before said this is common. We really enjoyed this hike and we'll keep it on the list.

This was a fabulous day hike. We parked in a neighborhood below the Mesa and hiked up. The hike up was pretty steep but definitely worth the views once we got to the top. Once on the Mesa it is a super easy, flat walk. There was lots of nice fall colors. We did not see a lot of people on the trail. All the people we saw were super kind.

This is an easy hike that loops around the lake. There is a $5 charge for parking. There are very nice clean restrooms at the trailhead. From the parking lot we went towards the right. The first part of the trail was asphalt. Once we got halfway around the trail was dirt.

This is one of my favorite quick, easy and close by hikes. This is to me as Squaw Peak is to my brother. Today it was so lush and green. Very few hikers for a weekend 9 in 5 groups. Lots of mountain bikers. I lost count but at least 15 groups. This is a popular biking trail but I don't typically see anywhere near as many as I did today.

This was a fun hike with friends. We started off from the Camp Ground and went South on an old jeep road. We saw several cars and SUV's try the road that day and turn around. While hiking further up there was a lot of evidence of rock scraped by others who had tried. We didn't stay on the road the whole time as we ventured off on small trails, etc. (the end of our hike is not on the route scout map I am including) We had directions to find some petriglyphs we never found but the hike was nice just the same.

It is a very rocky "trail." Some parts are quite sandy. One of us fell and cut their hand because of loose rocks and gravel.

Because it was very dry we didn't see many flowers.

I wanted to get up on the rim to find cooler temperatures than my East Valley home and also find a place to meet up with my daughter who was coming from Flagstaff. We decided, with another friend, to give this trail a try. I knew there would be a lot of people there as it is Labor Day weekend but I was completely surprised at how many more. I also didn't know there was a store right at the lake. We didn't go in, but I would have chosen another hike just thinking that a store stock full of beer would bring the crowds.
I spoke briefly to the woman stopping each car coming into the parking. This was late morning and she said she had already turned away literally 1000's of people looking for parking. We did ended up deciding to stay for the walk around the lake because our primary aim this day was to meet up with each other and be outside. We also thought that perhaps we would walk away from the larger crowds as we went around the lake. We found parking about 1/2 mile from the trail and followed a paved path through the trees to get to the lake. This is reflected in our mileage.
The crowds did change as we went around. The largest crowd near the store and parking lot seemed to be the partying and or fishing groups. As we went a little further towards the spillway it seemed to thin to large group holiday hikers and campers. A little further on and it seems like we mostly saw and/or stopped to talk with people that I am more used to seeing out on the trails. I would say we passed or were passed by quite a lot of people on this "back" side of the lake but not nearly as many people as towards the beginning.
It was warmer than I had anticipated on the hike. We reasoned that may have been due to the sunny areas we hiked through. We did notice a lot of shade and even a few places with deeper shade.
We saw 4 Elk in two different places, some squirrels and lots of butterflies of at least 3 varieties.
There were a few nice wild flowers that I have included in the pictures.
I probably won't do this trail again unless it where the group I am going with chooses. I did like the trail variety and beauty but I think it is probably always more populated than my taste. Would have loved it when my kids were younger and it would be a great place to hike with people who like a little off trail experience near a store.

We love this trail and have hiked in many times. This time we started at the bottom and went up about half way before turning around to meet time constraints. We have often left a car at the top or bottom and hiked in only one direction. There is more parking at the top than the bottom. It is a busy trail on weekends and holidays as it is very easy to access from the beautiful little town of Idyllwild. We hiked on a Monday and only saw one other hiker.

We loved this hike so much the week before that two of us return to spend time down at the creek. There were a lot fewer people on the trail and especially the trail that runs along the creek. The weather was perfect.

Similar to the week before. We saw a few Wild Roses which we had to stop and smell and lots of Columbines closer down to the creek.
