Good times. The little Miss and I walked up this hill Monday and I can say for sure that I will remember the day. It was a bit more crowded than we anticipated for a Monday but relatively private. You just gotta love that last mile from the saddle. It looks way worse than it is. Two things I learned of major import on this trek, my lungs suck, and it is probably best to leave the tequila for the after party instead of the in hike refreshment...
Lumberyard red and some good eats to celebrate our anniversary afterwords. Arizona is amAZing, we can go from desert to tundra in hours and wear shorts and teeshirts in winter. Congrats to MISSWALKIN 4 years married, 12 years together, and a whole lotta miles ahead of us. Let's just keep Walkin...

We wanted to burn some calories before drinking our dinner so we thought this would be a good way to do it. Climbed up West boulder saddle and followed over to Fremont saddle. Saw a couple young tarantulas on the down to the trailhead. (that trail is like crosstown traffic, I'd highly recommend the Dacite Super Loop if you prefer solitude) Followed the lost goldmine trail back to Carney springs and made sure to stop and see the big ole sagauro on the way.

Fun day. A midday serenade by boyscouts, Weavers Needle shrouded in fog, a nice drizzle on a chilly windy morning. Too bad the falls weren't running.

We had a blast hiking up to the peak. Didn't see too many people but we did see alot of impressive scenery. It wasn't too hard to find the way up top but I did have to coax my better half into climbing up to the register. Way to go Dani!

Day 1 of my Bday getaway.

I hate my birthday. Getting older sucks simply put. So we decided to getaway for a few days to the rim so we could see some snow before it melted. Opting to get a cabin in good ole Cristopher Creek instead of camping out was a good choice. We always stay at the Creekside tavern and they treat us right every time. (Food, bed, and booze but not necessarily in that order) :D

Day one we hit willow springs lake up to get a few pictures and visit our little picnic spot. starting from the horse trap trailhead (pretty sure that's what they call it) we made our way to the lake through ankle deep snow and commenced to gawk at the frozen lake. (we're both pretty much natives to the valley) I even saw people ice fishing for pumpkin sake. Apparently I need to get out more because I didn't realize you could do that here. After we took about a zillion pictures we continued on around the lake trail to the Dam. This side of the lake was not shaded therefore not frozen. I love to see water flow here on its way to Chevelon lake.

Our little picnic spot was the highlight for me since it was covered in at least four feet of snow and I literally needed snow shoes to get there. I'll have to consider buying some.
Returned pretty much the same way we came in and finished the night off with Prime rib some Blue Moon at the restaurant.

We hiked a variation of this in reverse starting at Peralta and storming Cardiac Hill and then following Bluff springs to the terrible Terrapin trail. Its much nicer in this direction. Going the opposite way on our needle loop I thought my timepiece was gonna stop. After a brief walk on the Dutchman we strolled along the Cavalry trail to Boulder canyon trail and on to the Marina where our shuttle awaited us. We saw a few things and some people during our travels and thoroughly enjoyed our first through hike in the supes.

Starting at the McKellips TH we plodded up the draw and had a great time seeing the Supes from a different perspective. Unfortunately like all our hikes this ended way too soon but I am sure we will be back. I have to thank a gentleman named Kevin and his dog (Cochise?) for helping me settle my wife's nerves about the last little climb. Ever see a chocolate lab try to climb a wall? It was inspirational to say the least.

The last hike of the year was a bit of a break for us. We opted out of a planned overnight in the supes (probably a good descision on my wife's part) and ended up taking a quick hike around to burro cove. Other than a few people on the way back we had the trail pretty much to ourselves. Four peaks was gorgeous dusted in white.

West Boulder Saddle from Carney has got to be one of my favorite hikes in the supes. Adding the rest of this crazy loop was even more fun. There were so many side routes I wanted to explore but not knowing how the day would turn out kept me from exploring too far. I will definitely do this one again. Seeing Fremont from that angle was cool and descending was exciting (at least my wife thought so). There were lots of people on the Peralta trail and at Fremont but we were virtually alone the rest of the day. Glad we took the Cave trail back. Nice day hike for loners.

It seemed like we were the only people there until we turned back, and then it seemed like a popular destination for a christmas eve day hike. never the less it was a good time and a wonderful start to the holidays. the falls were trickling. the sky turned a magnificent blue. the moon loomed overhead for most of the morning. Someone took the time to place a whole mess of cairns up to mark the trail and it was a much nicer hike to the massacre ground TH than previous trips. Merry christmas.

My wife and I took a little walk to Charlebois Spring and saw wonderful things along the loop. A misty morning gave way to a beautiful blue sky and sunshine and I was happy we didn't turn around while it was drizzling. Bull Pass was the only real elevation gain and it wasn't really all that bad. Clear pools at the spring led us further than we expected but we didn't waste around for too long and headed back after a brief looksee. We wanted to look for the map but... guess there is always next time. I hesitate to mention the views of Weaver's but I enjoyed them immensely. Aylor's arch and the crested saguaro were intriguing, wish we could have spent more time there. Only saw a few people the whole day, seems like more folks would get outdoors with the nice weather and all but hey I'm not going to complain about the solitude. Chasing the sunset over the horizon on the way out from first water led us to Abuelo's in Chandler for margaritas and some good food.

Took a quick trip around the Hackberry Spring loop to warm up for Thanksgiving dinner. Didn't see anyone until we got back to the windmill. climbed up on the ridge behind the Ramada to get a better view over the horse lot and surrounding area. Beautiful day for outdoor fun.

We wanted to see some fall color and settled on the See Canyon/Drew trail loop. Traffic was a breeze the whole way there. The leaves were gorgeous and I was amazed at how deserted the trail was as we wandered. Only one person the whole hike other than some folks around the Carr Lakes Campground. Ate a brief lunch on the rim and then headed down Drew. (Glad we took See Canyon on the way up... I think.) More great color on the way back down once you you hit the Highline trail. We didn't see any bears but we were startled by a group of cattle that were roaming the trail. Look out for landmines. Enjoy the hike.

We took a pleasant stroll out to The End and back. Picked up a bit of trash which reminds me I need bigger bags. All in all a great Sunday hike in the supes.

The Babe Haught trail has seen better days but it was still a very pleasant hike up and down the rim. Our goal was solitude and we definitely found it (unless you count the wildlife). The first few hundred yards are a bit overgrown with grasses, but don't let it discourage you from continuing. Once you start climbing it will clear up quickly. The brush is definitely filling in the space left after a fire decimated the trees in this area. The natural erosion that occurs after a fire is evident while you make your way up to the rim, and you get wonderful views of the area without obstruction by trees, but it is bitter sweet knowing how beautiful this area was only a short while ago. We found several areas where the trail could use repair (look out for the rebar poking out of the trail... lots of it). I think the Boys Ranch may need a little help maintaining the trail. Once you get to the top you are rewarded with a unique view of the area. We opted to take a lunch break and head back after making our way through the maze of cairns and young trees to a nice little clearing off the trail. We will have to come back and follow this to Knoll lake when we have a bit more time.

Took a little trip with my better half up the Derrick trail and around the Horton Loop as a prelude to the Race for the Cure. Just like the camp host said, It was a nice climbing trail with lots of good views of the rim. We found some interesting growths on a couple of trees and one happy dragonfly. We had the trail to ourselves for the most part until Horton Creek and then it was fairly busy. Apparently one of the people we passed was a hiker who was injured, although he never mentioned it to us :? , Hope he is alright. (I wonder where I can get one of those stretchers with the mountain bike wheel? Guess I should've asked the rescue team. It's a nice thought to know those guys will actually come get you if you need to be rescued. Careful out there.) Not alot of fall color yet but I bet it would be worth revisiting next month.
