Out on a marked trail beyond the turnoff to Boston Mill for a view of the whole hillside. Backtrack on the trail to Boston Mill turn off. Returned on the trail with a transition to railbed back to the parking lot.

Thanks to the provided GPS route, we were able to easily follow the cylindrical rock baskets to the top of the canyon rim and the start of the Fossil Wilderness Area. Using the GPS route was necessary for us, since the next rock basket was not always seen due to distance, and tree/bush growth.

Between the southern end of Quilter and Grass Shack there are two streams with water pools as a favorable sign that water is still present on the mtn. Grass Shack has very good running water. If dry, walk upstrem 5 minutes per instructions from the NPS. Manning Camp has very good water as normal. Call the NPS for more recent water reports.

With two others completed this passage yesterday from Pigeon Spring Trailhead to Sunflower. El Oso Road is usable for a passenger car. Many kudos to those who improved the trail between FR648 and Sunflower. Easy to follow with minimal cat's claw. When approaching and crossing Sycamore Creek, look directly south for the trail on the other side which begins the climb up to the ridge. About .5 miles from the highway underpass the passage trail intersects with another trail over to the available parking at the Bushnell Tanks road gate.

For completing the full passage, what works well is leaving your vehicle at the South Kaibab Trailhead or the parking area to the south on the rim road and arranging for the Canyon's taxi service to take you to as close as they can to the Grandview Lookout Tower and Tusayan Bike Trail trailhead. Call the taxi service to confirm their available times. They may only transport you to Grandview during daylight hours.
