We started from the east side since we parked in between Woolsey Peak and Signal Mtn. Headed west across the desert through the spring flowers. (after awhile our boots had a bright yellow dusting of pollen turning us into bees) Got into the main drainage and as we got closer we made the mistake of thinking the south side looked better. Climbed up to a notch where we could get a better look at the south side. It was cliffy and crubly so we moved back around to the east side (found some really big scat: squared off ends, looked like elongated marshallows - wonder what animal it came from). Got to the notch on the north of the peak between the peak and a beautful yellow fin of rock. It's just below the summit cliff band, headed to the west, up a gully, to a slope leading to the top. It was about 20 minutes from the notch to the summit. Not many entries in the register, last one was 3 years prior. But, of course, Peter Conklin of Congress, AZ had been there. Returned to the same notch and followed the drainage the entire way down.

Evil Don
First time tried coming in from Palm Canyon. Was fine hiking until the end of the canyon, there was a cliffy section, doable but as it was about 20 ft, seemed foolish to do it with out a rope.
Drove to the road north of Palm Canyon, Queen Canyon. Drove east along a wash. Hiked a straightforward route to the top. Saw a herd of 5 bighorn. Hiked it again in 1996, saw a herd of 17!

Lots of poppies!!
Another surprise was the trail up to the saddle and cairns after that.
To get to the trail and the cairns from Tonopah: head south on 411th ave until it ends at Salome Rd., go right (west) to W Courthouse Rd (paved). Turn left (west on W courthouse rd) Take the first dirt road on the left. This dirt road goes to a saddle west of saddle mountain, don't take it to the saddle, just go until it starts to get steep, find a place to park. Start walking west aiming for the largest cliff face on saddle mountain and you should run into the trail.
If you can't find the trail, aim for the base of the largest cliff band then head southwest up the gully. There's only one 4th class section at the top of the saddle and the secion is very short. You can't miss the cairns at that point.
You can clearly see the dirt road on google maps.

Finding a route is the hardest part. but now there are cairns. They start near the bottom of the big gully that comes right off the top (just a little to the right, really) and they stay on the right (east) side of the gully.
Last bit is a 4th class climb. A little dicey but doable. There were lots of big horn sheep jelly beans on top proving that they have no trouble with the 4th class section.

It seems ironic to some people that I go to Tucson to cool off in the summer. This trip it was more than cool, it was downright cold. A monsoon hit and produced hail (ow, that stuff hurts!) We were able to duck into one of the empty trail crew tents to dry out our gear before the next storm hit.
We had raced down to Tucson to get a permit before the visitor center closed. But we didn't really need to since there wasn't a ranger on top and the trail crew said there hadn't been one present all season due to budget constraints.
Didn't see any other hikers, only the trail crew.
Water report: the first stream crossing did not have any water on the way in. On the hike out, it was flowing.
Italian spring was clear though only about an inch deep.

Backpacking in AZ, water is always my major concern so here is H20 report.
Below the 1st falls the stream goes underground and resurfaces occassionally.
Oak Flat - there is no water at the spring but you can get to water downstream after some serious boulder climbing. If you're spending the night, it's probably better to stock up when you see water.

From the junction with the Sabino Canyon trail to Hutch's Pool, the trail is in great shape. It traverses Molina Basin with beautiful views in all directions for about .75 of a mile. Then it approaches the creek, which it crosses a few times. After another .75 the trail reaches Hutch's Pool. The pool has more sand than years past and while you can't swim laps in it, you can still get in for a dip and enjoy the lovely waterfall.
Above Hutch's Pool the trail has changed considerably since the Aspen fire and the heavy rains the following year. It used to be a easy to follow but now it's challenging to find and it occassionally disappears all together.
I hiked it mostly recently coming down from the top of Mt. Lemmon. I don't think the trail would be any easier to follow going up. I would only recommend this trail to someone who has hiked it before and has a sense of where the trail would be.

Made a loop backpack going up Fish Creek and returning to Tortilla TH via Angel Basin and the JF trail. It could have been done in 2 days but we got a late start (had to stop for ice cream and other fiddle farting in Apache Junction) and got out midday on the third day.
Major obstacles: only one near the junction with Roger's Canyon. (I think tis' near the "r" in "creek" on the topo) A big deep pool surrounded by slippery granite. Don't know if it's always there or just a remnanent of a wet winter. One of us Spidermanned it around the pool. Two of us climbed a 30' wall on the right. I wished I had a rope. Going down the other side as easier - or maybe being pumped with adrenaline made it seem easier.
Interesting site: Found a bunch of furniture made of rocks. Chairs, tables, etc. Near the intersection of Goat Creek.
Plenty of solitude. Only other person was a guy who was hiking from Phoenix to Albuquerque. He plans on writing a guidebook and calling it the Grand Enchantment (for Grand Canyon state and Land of Enchantment state)
