I have had my eye on this canyon (unnamed?) to the west of fish creek hill which I have been wanting to check out. Becky and I set out with the tentative plan of dropping into this canyon up by Tortilla Flats TH and connecting with the Lower Fish Creek route. Having no such luck with finding any information online for this canyon, we didn't know if we were going to cliff out and have to back track or if we'd make it all the way to the bottom. This canyon turned into a lovely little canyon that narrowed as it reached Fish Creek. There are several large trickling waterfalls from the recent rains that sure would be a treat to see gushing - however, getting there with any more water flow than there was at the time would be quite the challenge. We made our way around and down the obstacles which included one that left Becky draped over a rock with her legs dangling - which provided many laughs :y:

Once we got to Fish Creek, we were greeted with fall colors! We opted to just get our feet wet after several shallow crossing attempts as it looked like the options were wet feet or heavy brush. A large alcove on the left as the canyon bends south offered up some stunning views that made the wet feet well worth it. The towering canyon walls with the sun starting to peak through left us feeling quite happy :D We were treated to a few more cool caves and rock formations as well as some stunning fall colors before we made it back to SR 88. On our trek back up 88 to the hill, we marveled at the black marks glistening with evidence of recent and very large seasonal waterfalls. All in all, a good day!

Becky and I set out for a NYD hike with plans to visit Peter. Tortilla creek was raging so we opted to check out Geronimo head instead. As we neared the ridge before Geronimo canyon, we started to hear the sounds of gushing water. Much to our surprise, Geronimo was flowing heavily! :y: We aborted plans again and opted to head down the canyon. This is one of the most challenging canyons we have navigated through as you spend most of your time bouldering, down climbing, waist-chest deep in bushes or twisting your way through catclaw. The continuous waterfalls and geology made it well worth the effort!

I had remembered reading about Geronimo becoming a technical canyon at some point and figured it was a short canyon so worse case scenario - we'd just backtrack. We encountered the first rap site towards the bottom. This was easily navigated around by going up and to the left with a bit of a sketchy down climb on the other side. Of course, we meandered our way back upstream to catch what we had missed! :D

The second major rap site was stunning! Probably the biggest fall I have seen in the Supes so far. We guesstimated at least 50ft+ (later read that it was 70!) This one proved much harder to navigate around as the canyon clipped into the abyss. We stayed high to the right and took a ledge around to the right which we used to drop into a side canyon. The side canyon was in no way enjoyable as it was slippery rocks and pokey bushes with hidden cacti....The slot canyon at the bottom of that fall was beautiful. We made our way back down to tortilla flats. A VERY slow moving canyon given all of the obstacles but tons of fun! Would not recommend unless you thoroughly enjoy type 2/3 fun - bushwhacking, down climbing, bendy catclaw avoidance strategies, etc. All in all, a great way to welcome the New Year!

I decided to set out with Becky to explore this area that’s been on my i dont think for a while after seeing some recent adventurers shares fall colors and some water flow. ☺️

We parked at the vista and made our way down the road. I can understand why ADOT doesn’t want to fix it….Probably means there are less people out here 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyways, We had a blast making our way up the canyon. Several large boulder fields turned into some fun obstacles and route finding. For the most part it was a light to moderate boulder hop through. There were some tough shrubs here and there but otherwise, not to much in regards to plants/bushes that we needed to get through. The upper part of the canyon turned into a nice wash. We had to remember to keep looking up the whole time because those canyon walls hold so many interesting caves and rock formations. We stopped for lunch at Lost Dutch Canyon before making our way out of the canyon.

We decided to make our way up what initially seemed like a gentle slope upwards. This quickly turned into a steep scramble up loose rock. Being the stubborn women that we are, we forged onward and upward instead of backtracking down and over to a ridge that was likely better. 🤷🏻‍♀️ We finally made our way up and around to the top of the ridge. Would not recommend this way again 😂 Definitely type 3 fun - but it was worth it.

Man, oh man, what a view from up there! The ridge was easy going with sweeping views of Fish Creek Canyon, Four Peaks and the central Supes. We made our way along the ridge until we found a nice ridge to follow down to FR213. At the bottom of the ridge we found a wonderfully unavoidable field of catclaw. We twisted and turned and high stepped out way through the spikey mine field before getting up onto the home stretch of FR213. I had been dreading the road walk back to the car because I thought I would get bored and be tired….but the views were great and it turned out to be a very pleasant walk back to the car. All in all, a very fulfilling day of adventure.

Becky and I had previously covered most of the transgoldfield route while exploring other areas/loops. We were only missing a few small sections so we set off to do it all at once! Parked a car at the bulldog north gate and shuttled around to Willow Canyon. Got started right before sunrise and enjoyed the yellow glow as the sun came up. 😍 We made our way through the washes and trails and up to the saddle at the top of Rhyodacite just before 10am…..let the fun begin! Down Rhyodacite we went….through the bushes and over the rocks. Lots of type 3 fun! We had done a year prior as a loop from the high country but we hadn’t had time that day to check out all of the books and crannies this canyon has to offer. Checked out a few caves that happened to be well worth our while. Then came the dreaded March along salt river back to the car. All in all, a great day!

Fun little scramble around the lower end of the canyon. There are definitely ways to bypass some of the waterfalls and rappels, however, it requires a lot more effort. Can’t wait to come back in the spring when there’s more flow!
