First time back in the McDowell Mountains after a couple years. The coyote canyon portion was fun and interesting, the rest of the hike was pleasant but very flat. Lots of vegetation as well as hawks and a deer. This would be a great trail to bring kids and new hikers.

I set out intending to hike the Barks Canyon Lower Loop, a route that requires some bushwhacking. I haven’t had any experience with this kind of hike before, and I quickly concluded this one wasn’t a good idea for me. With a wet winter and recent rain it was tough to navigate - the banks had a lot of brush, and I wasn’t prepared to wade through the water. Maybe when the flow slows I’ll come back and try again. For today though, I opted to just continue hiking the Bluff Springs Trail and check out some of Terrapin Trail. It was a lovely day and I enjoyed seeing and hearing running water throughout the hike.

My first time hiking this loop, but I’ve done Second Water to Hackberry Springs a few times in the past month. Many of the streams that were flowing 1-2 weeks ago following the rains have become standing pools or dry. Still several running streams throughout though.

Trail was easy to follow and there were nice views throughout. Thank you to the volunteers who were out today cutting backing plants to maintain the path!
