Took a quiet weekend to myself in the Sierra Anchas last week to celebrate Samhain a day early under some beautiful fall foliage.

Made it to knolls hole, soaking in the abundance of fall colors the whole way, and spent my night dancing around the fire.

Left my GPS off, but went scoping out the route to the ruins Saturday afternoon. Made it to the overlook before heading back to camp for dinner. I’ll be back to find them.

A day in the Sierra Anchas is a day well spent. After lots of wandering around, I couldn’t find the summit register at the coordinates provided, but maybe I’ll uncover it on a return trip. The views at the end of the trail were incredible- namely the crumbling walls of the ruins perched up so high above the canyons and drainages below. Great spot to stop and eat lunch. My GPS was on the fritz, so I had to stick with just following the Cairns and trusting my gut- which I somehow lost a few different times on my way down to cross the drainage after reaching the summit, but found them again when I got up on the eastern side of the mountain. When I was leaving, it was much easier to keep track of them 😅

This trail supplies fantastic views with a decently quiet lake to reward you at the end. A friend of mine and I were on the trail by 8am, ate lunch under a tree next to the lake, and it was so nice that 5 hours just slipped away and we realized it was time to go back down the rim to our car😅 Needless to say, it was enjoyable.

I was feeling incredibly lazy, so I just went to go hang out quietly by the water for a couple days. Spent a healthy amount of time sleeping in my tent between intermittent rain storms.

The trail was pretty overgrown, and I spent a good portion of the ascent up to Aztec Peak wading through chest-high vegetation, but nothing impassible. I parked my car at the gate by the falls campground, because- to my understanding- FR487 was supposed to be badly eroded and closed to the general public until June of 2023. However, the gate was wide open, and there was no shortage of people traveling on it. Took a nice long lunch break at the top and watched the clouds roll over the surrounding landscape.

Went out for a birthday trip to spend some time in the woods by myself. This area never fails to disappoint. Spent most of my time poking around looking for early-season mushrooms. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it all the way to the ”summit” this time because a storm rolled in and the ground-shaking thunder and lightning flashes made me second-guess being so high up.

This was by far one of my favorite trips. The amount of cattle that I was pushing through was insane- at one point there must have been 20 cows plus all their calves scattered across and down the trail. In my experience, cattle can be pretty mean- especially around their babies. So, I kept a distance the whole time. The flow at Tonto Creek was so gentle, I was able to float upstream on my inner tube and explore the slot canyon to the left when you drop into Tonto Creek from the steep descent above. The water at this time of year was absolutely frigid- especially in the deeper pools in the narrow canyon. Spent some time exploring downstream as well, but the canyon upstream was far more interesting.
