The night in Lockett Meadow was fantastic. There was just a slice of moon, so the night was dark and the stars blinding (best stars I have seen in my life). Shortly after sundown, bull elk began to bugle. This went on all night. I walked out to the meadow but it was too dark to see them.
The next morning we hiked the trail. It is a constant climb and you gain 2000 ft before you break into the inner basin. The aspen were just beginning to turn (about 25% were bright gold). The weather was great and the forest was lush. Not much beetle damage in the area. When you enter the upper meadow, you are surrounded by the highest peaks in Arizona. If you look back down the trail you can see the painted desert in the distance.
Right now (Oct. 10th), the aspens should be approaching their peak, should be perfect. Hurry before the leaves are gone.
Happy Trails,
Ray-S |
