Post by Grasshopper »

MRRD Update 4/17/19:

"Effective this today forest roads on the north and west side of Highway 87 will be opened. The roads south and east of Highway 87 will remained closed until further notice, due to washouts and persistent snowbanks.

Forest Road 751, the road to CC Cragin/Blue Ridge Reservoir, will be opened by COB on Friday, April 19th. The gate at the boat ramp will be swung open to allow access to the reservoir. Forest Road 751B will remain closed due to extensive resource damage that occurred this past winter. We have no official word yet from AZ Game and Fish if they plan to stock the reservoir this year, please contact them for further information on their stocking schedule.

Forest Road 95 at Bear Canyon washed out this winter and will be gated closed on both the north and south end of the road until extensive damage can be repaired (see picture attached). "

Today I called the Black Mesa Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves Forest and they said that Rim Road 300 is open from the east end, although it is "travel at your own risk"
Civilization is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there

So much for that little pool that held a few trout next to the road.

MRRD Update 4/23/19:

"All forest roads on the south/east side of Highway 87 will be opened by this Friday, April 26th. With the exception of a portion of Forest Road 95, which is closed from FR95 139A, and FR95 and FR719, due to a washout at Bear Canyon that was incurred over the winter. A Forest Order is currently in progress to close this area on FR95 until repairs to the road can be made. Please use caution when traveling forest roads due to possible muddy conditions from melting snow.

The following campgrounds will remain closed until further notice:
• Knoll Lake CG
• Kehl Springs CG
• Moqui Group CG
• Blue Ridge CG
• Rock Crossing CG
• Long Valley Group CG

The Elks Group CG and Clint’s Well CG are currently open.

AZ Game and Fish Department is planning to stock CC Cragin/Blue Ridge Reservoir every week in May."

@Grasshopper
Wow, crazy picture of FR 95 at Bear Cyn. That makes the jog from Pinchot over to Fred Haught a little interesting.
Anyone have an idea what conditions on FR 300 Rim Road might be from 87 going east to Houston Bros TH?
I am planning a Cabin Loop trip in a few weeks and I usually start at Pinchot Cabin but was thinking of starting down at the south end of Houston Bros this time.
Thanks..

@bretinthewild If they’re opening 300 tomorrow that means it has dried out and been cleared of any deadfall. It should be fine to drive a sedan on as always though you can go faster with high clearance.
I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.

This is on the west side of Pinchot, correct? If so I'll adjust my mid May cabin route to go up Houston Bros instead of the big full loop around and avoid the road walk.
