The "Grand Staircase" moniker describes a geographical area in southern Utah known for its geological features, specifically a series of colorful rock layers that appear to ascend from the Grand Canyon northward to Bryce Canyon. Geologist Clarence Dutton first conceptualized this region as a huge stairway in the 1870s, with each cliff edge acting as a step.
