The mine shafts at this location had very unstable roofs. This one has fallen debris including rock and the wooden beams that once held it up. I suspect more than one miner lost his life in these mines. For that reason we did little more than stick our heads in the shaft opening. Of course we also stayed out because we've seen pictures posted on HAZ of rattle snakes coiled up on rock ledges along the walls mines in this area.
