Photos of the old car with what it looked like when new below. Research on the internet indicates it is a 1947 Pontiac Streamliner Coupe with the Silverstreak straight 8 L-head engine. A pretty nice car to be at a remote mining camp. The roads must have been better in those days. The straight 8 flathead engine was used from 1933 to 1954 with two increases in displacement over this period. So it was an old design which would become obsolete by the 1950s even though they continued using it until 1954. It was finally replaced by a V8 in 1955 which was about the time Pontiac decided to distinguish itself with higher performance engines. The straight 8 had become a dog compared to overhead valve V8s that were introduced by Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Buick in the early 1950s. The 1947 engine had 249 cubic inch displacement and was rated at 107 hp.
