This is one of my favorite hikes.... I just love the landscape up there. It almost looks like you are on the moon. The rock formations are bizarre.
I was hiking with a couple of friends and knew this hike was going to be pushing it for them. I was pleasantly surprised as they made it to within .2 miles of the Thumb.
I continued on to Tom's Thumb to get the obligatory pictures and then went back to eat lunch with my hikers. After lunch, they started their way back down and I continued over to the Outlook Trail. IMO this trail is a must when up there and much more impressive than the Thumb. I hung out at the end of the Outlook for awhile, taking in the incredible views. I figured since my hikers had a 1 mile head start on me, that I'd better jog back down to meet up with them.
On the way I stopped in what I'm calling the bowl area, which is the area that the East Trail intersects with the Tom Thumb Trail. I came across a birds nest in a cholla. Looking inside, there was a mother Cactus Wren w/ her little ones (see pictures and video). Back to jogging, I met up with my hikers about halfway down the northern decent from the high point.
The flowers up in the slightly higher elevations here, were looking better than down at lower elevations. The weather was unbelievable today and the clouds cast great looking shadows on the valley below.
