General Tom Thumb was PT Barnum's main attraction. As I was hiking today, I remembered a Tom Thumb story from my childhood. When I was a young boy (maybe a teenager), we had a hurricane that made the river swell. We saw some "rich kids" with a rubber raft going down the river and thought that looks cool. Us adventurous youths (3 of us), set out to build a raft (think nails and plywood) to navigate the river. To make a long story short, we navigated the Rooster River to a cemetery in Bridgeport. In this cemetery lies the body of Tom Thumb. I'll never forget as we took a corner, we saw something hanging in the tree. It was the shape of a baby; thankfully it was just a doll. But it did scare the heck out of us. We recruited some other kids to follow us with bikes.. good thing because our raft broke apart. When I told my Grandmother the story she just laughed. Several years after her death, one of my older cousins told me a story of my grandma, and her brothers that was similar to mine. They capsized there homemade boat in the Charles River. They thought they were all going to drown until one stood up and realized the water was only 5 ft deep.
The Hike was fun. It was my 4th time up Tom's and first with my camera and umbrella. I spent 40 minutes on top socializing and another 5 minutes taking pics. |
