| no partners | | I do a longer version of this one starting at the horse lot and hiking past the spring on the trail that loops back around to Garden Valley.
I hit the trail around 5:30am and my truck was the only vehicle parked along First Water Rd. It's always extra cool when you know you're the only one out there and that doesn't happen here too often, even during the summer. Having done this one so many times, I wasn't counting on taking many photos, especially when there isn't any water. So, I was surprised to find myself dilly-dallying all along the dry creekbed gawking at the huge boulders, which seem much larger when they aren't partially submerged and you can stand right next to them. This very familiar spot takes on a different character when dry and I was more entertained than I expected to be. It's interesting what you notice when there's no rushing water to command all of your attention. The spring was flowing faster than I expected, too. Not fast enough to put water in the creek, but it provided a cool oasis for a lot of large frogs.
It's just beautiful out there in the early morning and I didn't see one other person. The only sounds were the wind, the birds and a not very distant pack of howling coyotes. I kept a close eye out for snakes, but I didn't see any. As I hiked through the First Water trailhead parking lot on my way out, there was only one car at 8:30am and there were 3 at the Crosscut trailhead. |
