| no partners | | Met up with my hiking partners, Rand and Todd at 7am in AJ. Started this hike at 7:30 from First Water TH with the goal of reaching La Barge Box. Picked up the Second Water trail, through Garden Valley, and down the hill to Boulder Canyon. Headed north for a short way, then crossed the creek and took the trail leading to La Barge. Boulder hopped and bushwacked our way south down the creek to LaBarge Box. The many waterfalls provided a soothing soundtrack along the way. Reached our destination at 11:15am. What a destination it is. Flowing waterfalls, full pools, colorful granite, surrounded by towering walls. Even better, we were the only ones there. We took of our shoes, lounged, ate lunch and did some exploring (playing) around this incredible area. I felt like a kid on a playground. We decided to avoid the bushwacking and bouldering return route and opted for the Battleship Mountain pass that took us to Boulder Canyon. It was a little tricky finding any trail. I didn't know if one even existed until Todd spotted a cairn and soon a trail became clear. Boulder Canyon was flowing nicely too, although not as fast and powerful as La Barge. Found ourselves back at the Second Water trail and started our way back towards Garden Valley. When we reached Garden Valley, we veered off trail to our right and finished what would be the back half of Garden Valley/Hackberry Springs loop. After making one wrong turn we decided to trust the GPS and made our way off trail over a small ridge. From atop the ridge we spotted the trail and finished off the last quarter mile to the TH at 3:45pm. |
