| no partners | | | Did this with my bruddah and the Hate Crew. My GPS didn't acquire any satellites until we had gone a while. The portion of this trail that we did was pretty bad. We started at the parking area across FR 300 from the road up to Baker Butte. We headed out east, and the first few hundred yards seemed okay. Then it runs into the first of many side roads that seem to litter this portion of the Mogollon Rim. We had to look around for the silver chevron trail markers on the trees before getting lucky. Then it hit FR 300, and there was no evident continuation of the trail on the other side so we walked down that road. We hit the trail a few times, but it always seemed to head back towards FR 300. We hit FR 218A, and decided to take that out to the edge of the rim so at least we could see something other than FR 300 and the bevy of dust-creating vehicles headed out to SR 87. Found a nice spot with some views for lunch, then continued west on 218A until its junction with FR 300. We hit the Crook trail there, and followed it for about 500 yards before my friend the New Mexico locust and numerous downed trees persuaded us to finish the hike on FR 300. The portion of the Crook trail from SR 87 until the Potato Lake road (FR 147) seemed like a mess, but I suspect that we missed a good portion of that segment completely or the various maps I consulted are bunk. Some of the segments of the Crook trail seem to run right alongside the road, so perhaps it's supposed to be on FR 300 there. Not Recommended! |
