Started out from the TH around 8:40 a.m. I stopped to take care of something, and the rest of the group was gone. I took the opportunity to make my way up at my own pace and take waaaaay too many pictures. The stretch from where the Parker Creek trail tops out about 3 miles from the TH until its upper terminus @ the Carr TH goes through an area that was barbecued by the Coon Fire, but it seems to be recovering nicely with a nice mix of Gambel oak and my buddy the New Mexico locust. Went to the top of Aztec Peak via Abbey's Way, and that trail is really neat, but the last 1/2 mile to the peak was a slog for me. Met Red @ the lookout, and I thought I let his dog escape. Turns out he was just hiding, and probably because he tinkled on John's pack. Bad dog! The rest of the group went down Moody Point trail while I took the road back to the Carr TH then down Parker Creek trail back to the TH. On the portion of the Parker Creek trail just before it drops down into the Parker Creek drainage proper I came across a disheveled memorial to one Norwin Dixon. Mr. Dixon was suffering from Alzheimer's disease in 1999 when he went missing on this trail. No trace of him was ever found. I evidently startled a fairly large animal about a mile from the TH on the way down, and I'm guessing it was a bear because its feet sounded padded rather than hoofed. It was really close, but I never saw it. About a 1/2 mile further down John gave me a good startle when he came right up behind me while running down. Ran into a group of about 8 Boy Scouts w/ 4 adult chaperones about 1/8 mile from the TH. Many of them looked pretty beat, and they had a long way to go. It was great to finally meet Bruce & juliachaos, and always good to hike w/ Joe B., John, and Tim #2. Went to Libby's El Rey in Globe afterward. |
