The thunder was close, but not close enough to scare me off. Rained off and on until I hit the Waterline Road, then rained pretty much non-stop until I was in the lower reaches of the Bear Jaw Trail. Only saw one good lightning flash, right over me while on Waterline. Counted 3 seconds until the thunder clap, so a good 3,000 feet up in the air. I now see why my Cosmic Ray's hiking guide recommends going clockwise: it's much less nerve racking along the Waterline. Going counter-clockwise today (as I hate descending Abineau), I was really nervous about missing the turn onto Bear Jaw from Waterline. Made it just fine (especially with the big "road closed" sign in the middle of Waterline at the junction). Pretty decent wildflower showing, I'm willing to bet it will get better on these trails further into August. |
