| no partners | | This is my favorite fall hike on the Rim. When the trees start to turn, it is magical. The spring at Winter Cabin provides a lush environment in the steep drainage down to Sycamore Canyon. From the trailhead, the walk through the mixed conifer forest only occasionally allows a glimpse of the canyon. There is alot of deadfall that someday may be the ruin of this hike.
Down the trail the trees change to junipers--one seed and alligator, then comes the gambel oak trees. As you descend the steep sections of the trail, last winter's runoff has turned the trail into washed out a washed out gulley. I did some maintainance by placing some rocks and logs to try to stop the erosion. This would be a great work project some weekend.
I didn't see another soul on the trail the entire trip. Not even woodcutters at the tornado site!
At the cabin, the mystery hiker still hadn't come back to retrieve his/her gear--sleeping bag and stuff sack full of food, both hung up to keep the critters out. It's been more than a week since I first spotted them.
I took the trail another 1/4 mile below the cabin, then creek-scrambled all the way back up to the cabin, taking pictures all the way. It was amAZing! |
