I do this hike every fall to see the maple trees at the spring. There should be leaves changing over the next week, too. The roads out from Flagstaff are very rough--Woody Mt. Road to the end is seeing MANY hunters and the vehicles have turned it into washboards. The last 4 miles is very rough--high clearance is needed. The HAZ trail info lists this hike as 5.5 miles. If the Winter Cabin is your destination, the hike is 1.3 miles one way according to my Garmin, with a 634 foot drop in elevation from the trailhead. Once at the cabin, there are connector trails to Hog Hill and Ott Lake. Maybe the loop accounts for the mileage. The Mangum's hiking book has the mileage correct. The trail has seen some damage in the last year, probably due to monsoon rains, but it is still easy. This is part of the Sycamore Wilderness area. There is a sign-in box at the trailhead. Starting in ponderosa pine, it drops into gambel oak, juniper, and finally into maples that grow profusely in the drainage. Watch the dirt as you go down--white quartz has washed out of the ground all along the trail. I wonder if the cowboys spent the winter hunting for gold! Winter Cabin Spring was putting out more water than I recall seeing for the past 4 years. The water was clear and could be filtered to drink. I ran into one deer hunter dressed all in camo, resting at the cabin. I had known he was around because of the sign-in log at the trailhead. There was bear sign all along the way, but the only wildlife I saw was squirrels and jays. The afternoon light faded quickly, and I ended up back at the truck at dusk. I'm glad I wore bright yellow for safety. My SPOT worked perfectly, all the way along the trail.
