At the trail head (I opted to begin the loop at the intersection of FR172A and old FR192) it was 26 degrees, but the uphill climb (did the loop clockwise) quickly warmed me. At the Wilderness Boundary I first followed 192(?) taking a left fork uphill but soon ran out of "trail" . Backtracking, I took the right fork about 100 yds past the gate, downhill, and followed that, more or less, into Whetrock Canyon. I say "more or less" because that trail too has become seriously eroded by landslides and my goal was to make it into the canyon by means other than sliding the entire descent on my back. Some bushwhacking was the only alternative I could choose. Didn't see a soul the entire hike which I thought unusual for Woodbury TH. I did note that the road to the trail head has once again begun to show signs of damage from drainage since the last time the Forest Service graded it-- consequently, I would not recommend trying to access the TH in a passenger car. |
